im going out of my mind! i have a gorgous cross alsation labrador/ houdini. she is 3 years old and no matter what we do she keeps getting out of our garden. its a fairly big area and she gets lots of walks. the problem is its causing great unease with our naighbours who have recently put up a fence partly to stop her doing this. however about 20 mins ago she scaled it with no trouble at all and i could hear them going mad about her. our other problem is our 5 year old german shepard who i worry will pine if we rehome lucky(3yr old).
can anyone help withany sugestions or even if any one can offer an excellent fool proof home to an excellent dog then please let me know . im very sad but at my witts end :(

rinnie, why don't you look at installing a dog pen with a roof?

It's not just your neighbours to worry about also Lucky's safety. I'm afraid if it was my dog, I'd either get a pen with a roof (please don't tie her up because she'll hang herself over the fence) or keep her in.

My parents had an alsation x labrador (crossed with a few other things I think!) who was exactly the same and they tried all sorts. Perhaps a better idea is to only let her out when you're there to supervise. If she gets plenty of walks and playtime there's no reason she shouldn't be able to stay in the house during the day.

For our escapologist GSD, we attached a metal ring to the wall of the house, and he has a long plastic encased steel lead which enables him to move all around the patio, but not get to the bottom of the garden, or too close to the hedges between ours and the neighbours. This also enables the kids to have a dog mess free area, as he does all his business up on the patio - nice and easy to swill down. I don't tend to leave him out there when there's nobody around though, as he's a bit of a wuss and cries for me. He'll happily sit there while we're in the garden with him, or while I'm in the shed cleaning the rabbits out. HTH
