Ok it says its 12A, which I know is under 12's to be accompanied by an adult.

Here's the dilemma. My boy is 6, and Indy mad.

Do I tell him no as he's too young, or is the film safe enough for him to watch.

Obvioulsy I'd appreciate feedback from those who have seen the film.

It might help me make up my mind whether he's old enough to view it or not.

Cheers

Most of the Indy films have at least one bit in where someone's face peels off, or they exploded into flames, or otherwise die horribly, but aside from that they are standard action jaunts across the world. So it is really up to you as to whether your kid can make it through the darker bits.

Just listened to the Mark Kermode review on the Radio 5 podcast in which someone asked this very question (though I believe the child in question was 8 ).

Kermode said that the BBFC rated the film as 12A due to three specific issues:

- a scene where someone is devoured by a plague of ants.

- a scene where someone is consumed by fire (which, bizarrely, starts in their eyeballs).

- continued focus throughout the film on a flick knife carried by one of the main characters.

The review is linked to on the front page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/) of the Radio 5 site, if you want to listen to/watch it yourself.

When in doubt you could always consult the BBFC website, where they tend to explain why a film has been given a certain rating in the 'Extended Classification Information' section.

You can find the site at http://bbfc.co.uk/recent/index.php?media=film

A 6 year old is not ready to see a 12A rated film. No exception. Why even bother asking, it's a no brainer.

Try this site.

http://pbbfc.co.uk/

It is run as a subsidiary to the BBFC and gives detailed easy to understand pointers as to why a film has received the certificate it has. I believe it also allows parents to comment on what their children enjoyed and or found scary.

The BBFC originally wanted to make 8 the cut off for a 12A certificate film even if the child is accompanied. However they did eventually decide that they would leave it up to the parents.

My suggestion would be go and see it first if you can afford it and then decide whether you think your little boy will be ok with it.

Edit: In addition to Hecate quoting the good Doctor one other thing that the BBFC were concerned about is the scene were Indiana Jones hides inside a fridge. This caused a problem due to the possibility of imitation.

hes indy mad?
as has been said i wouldnt know how a 6 year old child could see any of the indy films tbh
im pondering whether i should let my 9 year old daughter see the original 3, has already been said they are all quite dark and gruesome in parts, specially raiders (dead bodies on spikes, faces blowing up and melting, spiders, snakes etc etc)
i know theyre pgs but.....

Also worth considering that the original cuts of the first 3 tended to have extra bits in them that were cut for the DVDs and the ones they show on TV. It won't amount to much, but it's the little bits that add up, I suppose.

My (almost) 5 yr old has watched the trilogy, and has had no problems. Each child is different, although I wouldn't take him to the cinema to watch it, I do like to 'vet' films before he's allowed to see them.

i'd of thought even watching a film through yourself is no guarantee, its hard to remember or even think what a young child MAY find scary and have nightmares over...personally I wouldn't take the risk and wait til they were at least 8 before thinking of a 12a

Went to see this yesterday and there were a few children in there about that age, as said before though, if he gets scared easy, i wouldnt take him as there are a couple of things that could scare him.

The original trilogy are all pg's and yes I have concerns about him seeing a 12a, hence the original question. Its not a simple case of, I'm going to take him to it, I am trying to get some sensible opinions and views.

From what i have heard and been advised, there is enough content in the film to be suitable worried. A relative is seeing the film tonight, and her opinion will be valued as to whether it really is a 12a or an over zealous certification.

Thanks for constructive comments though Cyclone!

It's a valid opinion, they give the film a 12 rating for a reason, there's a huge difference in the maturity of a child of 6 compared to one twice that age.

One little lad I know (8, I think) is Star Wars mad, and loves the Empire (he even makes death stars and star destroyers from meccano), and so his let him watch Indiana Jones.

Of course, being 8 and not realising that all bad guys aren't real, he duly decided that the bad guys in Indiana Jones were cool and decided to, um, decorate his room to reflect this.

I wish I could have seen his mum's face when she went into his room to find it covered in Swastikas! A little chat was duly had...

I don't think any 6 year old should see a 12a film, even if he *Is* Indy mad. That little lad isn't allowed to watch Episode 3 because it's a 12, and he isn't. Hell, I'm 27 and still hate the dark*, so imagine what I'm like after watching films like [rec] and Dawn of the Dead!

*Scotophobia: it's no less irrational a fear than, say, heights....

We've decided to buy our lad a couple of the toy figures and wait until it's out on dvd, that way we can skip anything that we consider inappropriate...these days it's not very long to wait.

My son is a testosteroned up nearly 10 year old and he's terrified of Indiana Jones films. Looks like it'll be me and hubby going on our own. Anyone up for babysitting?:D

My parents taped it off tv when I was a nipper and then recorded random things over the nasty parts! Instead of the skeleton gobbing up a snake, I got a little kid in a yellow mac and umbrella dancing in the rain.

Can't say which was more terrifying!

I remember the time I went to see the latest Harry Potter in France, which doesn't have any age limits below I think 15, and it's up to parental discretion. About 1/3 of the audience was crying as parents had taken kids as young as 4/5 to a film which got a 12A in the UK!

I wish the 12A would be taken back to a 12+ rating. I saw the film yesterday and DEFINITELY would not like an under-12 seeing it. There are some really gruesome scenes in it!

Well I was traumatised by Oliver! as a kid and that's a U certificate! In fact I remember seeing it at the Crucible many years back and half the kids were sobbing when Bill Sykes came on and left at the interval.

Save your cash dont take any child to see it because its absolute rubbish such a dissapointment and not becuse he is getting on a bit the story is awefull and the acting is wooden and the stunts to far fetched if you ask me

Take them to see Ironman totally awesome film.

Ironman is tosh. Indy was great but 6 is perhaps a little young however the best bit is the pop out bit ; half the cinema today threw popcorn all over the place. The ants may also upset him if he's a bit weak of stomach.

We saw it last night, I think the rating is right, it could cause worries or nightmares for younger children.

We adults always want our kids to enjoy what we like to enjoy, but it is sensible to allow young children to grow up under our supervision.
The scene with the ants is a bit silly and not really believable, but it could terrify younger children.

I shall watch out for the ants then Incubus, and make sure I don't tell my hubby :hihi:

My wife has just got back from taking our 10 year old and his 11 year old friend. Her concern was that he wouldn't be able to sit still for 2 hours (he has the concentration of a gnat), but he was spellbound. They both loved it.

It wasn't an option to take our 6 year old. He would have been terrified.
