Looking at nitelife40's recent thread on forum 40's it prompted me to bond with my fellow "Life Beginners" and ask if any of you remember the following:

A programme called the Double Deckers? There were a group of kids on a red bus - one little girl I think was called tiger cos she had a cuddly tiger with her.

All together now - "Come on Board, Come on Board, Come on Board with the Double Deckers!!!"

Other programmes - The Champions. There was Sharon who was telepathic and another 2 blokes with powers but can't remember what they were.

There was 'The pretenders' and 'The Persuaders' one of which Tony Curtis and Roger Moore were in!

The Banana Splits - I bet some of you are now singing the song!

Last but not least - 'Land of the Giants' when I was a kid I thought the special effects were great. That giant cotton reel and pencil wow! Now I bet it would look ridiculous to our kids!

Come on Owdlad - I know you will remember some of these!

There was no telly when I was a lad! in fact after we had walked fifteen miles each way to do a 23 hour shift down the pit in our clogs, then walked back home there was little time to do anything, apart from having that blue stuff painted on our heads to get rid of ring worm.

We were so poor that to make it look good, we sat with the curtains open and formed a circle around a candle so it reflected on our faces, and as the flame flickered it looked as if the telly was on.

Them were the good old days:D

I used to dislike Blue Peter immensely, preferring the more laid-back Magpie, fronted by thigh-flashing Susan Stranks and Tony Bastable. Blue Peter seemed such goody-goody propaganda, full of tiresome, over-enthusiastic model makers, bottle top appeals for charidee, and kiddies on Outward Bound courses. My favourite moments were when Shep died, the Blue Peter garden was vandalised [nearly choked with laughter], and John Noakes narrowly escaped death on a Bob Sleigh run.

I liked Bananasplits very much though, especially the wreckless way they drove their cars, as if paralytically drunk. The show featured some good cartoons too.

Another memory is of the perfectly dreadful east European, black and white series with sub-titles like 'Belle and Sebastian'. Often, they would feature some wretched oaf of a boy called 'Galimjhan', or something, whose parents were travelling folk unwelcome in some Balkan village. As the slavic schoolchildren stoned the caravan, the subtitles would say, 'Poor, poor Galimjhan and his family'. Cue sentimental music.

Another awful kiddies' programme was How! This featured unutterably boring Jack Hargreaves, who would waffle on until he foamed at the mouth and fell over backwards about handloom weaving in eighteenth century Suffolk. His side-kick, Fred Dineage was nearly as bad. I remember he devoted nearly an entire programme towards 'How to build a dam'. When were we ever going to use the blasted knowledge?

Looking back, Dick and Dom don't seem quite as bad after all....

Was having the 'childhood telly' chat in the pub the other night... 'Fraid the aforementioned programmes were a bit before my time though.

Does anybody remember the Moomins, Rainbow, Button Moon, The Raggy Dolls, Captain Bucky O'Hare, The Adventures of Willy Fogg, We Are The Champions or Fraggle Rock?

And what about the genius that was Wacky Races?

Well... believe it not I'm afraid! Lisa Stansfield was on Razzmatazz but not Double Deckers.

Which isn't to say that those bus-lovin' kids didn't go on to greatness. After all, Brinsley Ford was lead singer of the mighty Aswad and is now a Radio 6 DJ (ok, not exactly 'greatness', but Aswad were fantastic in their day). And Peter Firth is an actor of some renown.

Just remembered Mr Ben. I use to wish I could go into a clothes shop like he did and try on a costume and have an adventure.

What about the Clangers.

Micheal Bentins (probably spelt name wrong) Potty Time! All the little models when you could see little footsteps and things move from the tiny little creatures that were supposed to be there!

I wonder what the new Magic Roundabout will be like!

Good grief - was it really 1970! And it's never been shown since? Can you get it on DVD? I remember it oh so clearly and, in fact, recently considerd buying a rear platform London bus now they have got rid of them (fools). Would it be ridiculous to form a new, real life 'Double Deckers' in the grounds of my residence, Toffingham Hall? Bagsy being Doughnut.

Sorry to be a pedant, but as an Inkspots afficianado I feel impelled to point out that all recordings were originally released on 78rpm shellac discs - they had got rid of cyclinders by the 'thirties (fools)

Loved the ringworm ref, Owdlad, did you have your tonsils whipped out while you were still alive as well?

I think I must of watched an awful lot of television as so far I've regognised and remembered every single program mentioned!!
How about 'Daktari' with Clarence the cross eyed lion or even further back 'Gigantor' a cartoon about a huge metal flying robot. For years I thought I must of imagined this one aas no-one seemed to of heard of it, now thanks to the internet I know i'm not deluding myself.
Just remembered Hectors House and the badly dubbed Robinson Crusoe and I'm sure there was another foreign one about white horses?

There were so many great kiddies programmes aound:

The greatest of them all, "The Flashing Blade" - unsurpassed;

Banana Splits - completely surreal, with fantastic cartoons. The Arabian Nights one was great, also the three Musketeers - and Robinson Crusoe, of course, with that stirring music.

Loved Double Deckers as well - wished I could have adventures like that! Scooper was the actor Peter Firth, and Brinsley Forde went on to form Aswad, I think;

And all those badly-dubbed, mainly East European series were brilliant - I loved them! Although the French ones were best - "Belle and Sebastian", "White Horses", "Desert Crusader", the one with the French test pilots ...... Fantastic!

Only the terminally uncool kids watched "Blue Peter" :gag: :gag:

My partner and I went to Morrisons the other day, and he was moaning about all the shopping bags he had to carry. He said to me "where's the b***dy cabbage?" Can any one else remember Crackerjack? Didn't the kids have to answer questions to win prizes and if they got it wrong they got a cabbage?

I can't believe nobody has mentioned 'Pigeon Street'! Long-distance Clara, Molly and Polly, Mr MacAdoo, Dr. Glossop. Oh it was fab.

Remember these lyrics anyone?

Long-distance Clara drives a juggernaught
way down the motorway
to the busy port
Long-distance Clara - nothing's too far away
Picking up and dropping off, load after load

Long Distance Clara, shifts the gears
Long Distance Clara, she safely stears
Long Distance Clara, slams on the brakes
Long Distance Clara, accelerates
Long Distance Clara driving round the bend
Hot dinner waiting at her journeys end
Long Distance Clara, driving down the road
Always on time and never late

(spoken)-
Long Distance Clara, well, she could drive,
across the Sahara....

Pole to pole, east to west
nothing's too far away
for Long-distance Clara

Double or drop!! I remember that one! Three cabbages and you were out . . . all the prizes you could carry . . . quality telly!

I have to utter the immortal words BAGPUSS at this stage, however. It's an obvious one, but when I bought the video and watched it again - and I was in my thirties - I cried!!! It was like an amazing childhood blanket being wrapped around me . . . aahh, I miss that level of comfort . . .

Junior Showtime - what torture! Good grief, I remember it as a parade of precocious brats from stage schools with voices like air-raid sirens, intercut with the occasional chancer from the provinces who's impression of Elvis had caused a sensation at the trades and labour club, but which suddenly seemed cringe-making and ridiculous on national TV. The whole thing was toe-curling, even to a young urchin such as myself at the time. It was terrible and ugly, but strangely compelling - like watching a firing squad.

Tales Of The Riverbank, on the other hand, was sublime - I play guitar to this day as a direct result of the ace theme tune. And I talk to guinea pigs.......

I would love to know what the Singing Ringing Tree was all about, I remember a scary little goblin thingy and a man dressed as a bear, but that's about all.

In defence of Blue Peter, there wasn't much else on for kids to watch, childrens hour was 4 to 5 in the afternoon (if I remember correctly that long ago), and Blue Peter & "It's Friday, it's five to five, and it's" Crackerjack were firm favourites. Four Feather Falls - anyone remember that? And what about the Sunday special Tinga & Tucker Club with Auntie Jean? What programme had Ollie Beak in it?

This weird buzzing noise causes everyone in Britain to start smashing up machines. This girl's family flee to France, but somehow she gets split up from them and starts wandering through the countryside on her own. She has various adventures and ultimately discovers the source of the mysterious power - bafflingly, it turns out to be this huge spooky rock in an abandoned quarry that contains the spirit of Merlin (or something bonkers like that). She persuades the rock that it isn't being very nice, and lo! The madness stops!

I only know this because there's a guy on the internet who will send you a VHS copy of it if you send him a tenner. All I actually remembered from being a kid was, as you said, the pylons and the buzzing. Spooky indeed!

I remember Crackerjack.........everyone then shouted CRACKERJACK.

Its Friday, its five to five, its CRACKERJACK. Yes you won a cabbage for getting a question incorrect. The game was called double or drop and it came at the end of the programme. The frontman initially was Eamon Andrews, then Micheal Aspel and finally Stu 'I could crush a grape' Francis, now what happened to him.

Regulars on the show included, Don Maclean, now on Radio Two on Sunday Morns, The Late Leslie Crowther and Peter Glaze. One of the female helpers ended up in a group called Bardot that represented UK in Eurovision Song Contest singing 'One Step Further'

We used to watch The Golden Shot at my grandma's in Walkley (mother wouldn't allow us to watch commercial television at home). I seem to recall that if anyone ever did break the 'golden thread', they won one hundred guineas! When did guineas go out? Or are they still with us? Was it just the amount of currency that was a guinea (it was £1 and a bit, I think), or were/are there specific guinea notes and coins? If they are still available, I really think I should start using them down at my local Aldi, 'a guinea's worth of inedible polish breakfast cereal, my good man!'

Bernie The Bolt had a cushy job, didn't he? All he did was step forward at Bob Monkhouse's signal, put a bolt into the crossbow, then step back again!

Golden thread? Crossbows? The general public? Guineas? Bob Monkhouse? All thrown together? This planet is insane!!

BoppinBruce

The Golden shot was originally hosted by Canadian Jackie Ray, he of 'Spot The Tune' fame and the bolt loader was Heinz

LOL

Sorry, but that is not accurate..... The "little girl" who played "Tiger" was definitely not Lisa Stanfield. That actress is older than I am.

Lisa Stansfield is younger than me, so could not possibly have been in "The Double Deckers". Sorry! Believe it not!

I know Brinsley Forde is now part of the reggae band Aswad, and also presents a music show on sattelite tv. (VH-1 iirc)

There was a programme, about 2 years ago, on the tv about The Double Deckers: a "where are they now...?", and although the others appeared, (brains, donut, and company) the actress who was "Tiger" could not be traced. I think she is enjoying her anonymity. lol

I used to like watching a drama series called "The Boys Of Flaxton Hall", made by yorkshire tv in the late sixties or early seventies.

I also liked "follyfoot", (another yorkshire production iirc!) and I liked watching "Black Beauty" which had the actress Stacy Dorning in it.

My mum loved the Golden Shot. Thanks for that memory, Lord Snooty, and Boppin Bruce. Do you remember the "dolly bird" type, that they had assisting on that show, her name was Anne Aston (Or was it Ashton?) She could not add up, and used to have to count on her fingers to calculate the contestants' scores!?

Plain Talker,
I am sure that I read of Anne Aston's death, a short while ago. I recall her rapport with Monkhouse, and the mini skirts she wore.

Do you remember Tom Gratton's War? I have a memory of the short series around 68/69. I think it was set in Yorkshire.

Plain Talker
07-04-2005, 16:56
oh, timo, i really hope that what you read was mistaken.

I know most dads thought she was lovely. and I did think that her "daffy-ness" was sweet. I think that was her appeal.

I don't remember ton gratton's war very well, but i do remember the original "Carries War" -which was brought back recently, as a 2-hour remake.v I enjoyed watching that, as much as I enjoyed watching the original.

It's all coming back to me now, thanks. I don't think I will bother getting the VHS copy though. I might have nightmares.

That was my normal comment about "The A-team"...

I was not at all fan of "the A-team", but my lad, and his dad loved watching it. therefore , erm.. we watched it...

I'd say "what a load of rubbish! How is it, they can fire a flippin' machine gun, into a crowd of a thousand people, and miss every one of the buggers?!"

the basic plotline was "How are we going to dope B.A. Baracus, 'this' week, and get him onto a plane!?" hardly intellectual stuff!

Stig Of The Dump" was one of my favourite books, as a child. it was one I could read over, and over again.

The six-million dollar bionic man was my cousin's favourite programme when she was little, she couldn't say "Steve Austin", she used to call him "Shteem Ost"

Wow, Forgotten all about the Worsel Gummidge series-----probably the best children's series ever made. Adults could enjoy it too as it contained a lot of very funny , sly humour that I don't think kids would have cottoned onto.
The casting was near-perfect too.
I know a bit about Jon Pertwee and Una Stubbs but have you any idea whether the kids who played the young brother and sister ever became famous later on ?

Wasn't the little girl Charlotte Coleman, who was in 4 Weddings & a Funeral and Oranges are not the only Fruit (was she also Marmalade Atkins??)

Her sister was in Casualty for ages too.

She died a couple of years ago from an ashma attack. Shame cos she was only really young.

I sincerely hope I am wrong about the death of Anne Aston. Maybe I saw a feature on the death of Bob Monkhouse, and got the two's circumstances mixed up? I ought to have checked up, but didn't know where to look. Kris is probably right [fingers crossed...].

Someone mentioned Junior Showtime and the appalling Poole Family. I think the Uncle figure was called Bobby Bennett. I seem to recall seeing Glyn Poole [the angelic, Leeds schoolboy 'entertainer'] on a documentary in the early nineties. He had turned into a screamingly 'camp' man, who was still involved in music [of a sort...]. He looked absurd, dressed in clothes of a 'New Romantic' style a decade too late. The Pooles were a kind of Yorkshire Von Trapp family, minus the lederhosen and talent. I used to watch them on a Sunday evening, and wonder how they were received at school by their peer group? I seem to remember a single was released called 'Milly Molly Mandy'. I bet that made Glyn Poole a lot of new friends in the playground. I would have ducked his head down the lavatory in disgust.

Sad to hear of the girl's death though.
I hate to tempt fate by asking you this but I only spend a bit of time in the U.K. but is Jon Pertwee still going strong and for that matter , Una Stubbs ?

Jon Pertwee is no longer with us, died quite some time ago, although his son, Sean, is an actor and has been in a lot of "gritty" British low budget films.

Una Stubbs, I think she's still doing ok, if someone can confirm?

And Bab's Windsor was also in Worzel, she's in Eastenders (a popular (?) soap) here.

Missb,
You miss Bill and Ben. Have you not seen the new ones with the voiceover of John Thomson [Fast Show etc]? They are very nice. The originals were the best though. There was an element of mystery to the originals; what lied beyond little Weed, I used to wonder? Bill and Ben would sometimes wander off, and I used to wonder where to. The actors were good too. I thnk they were National Theatre players.

No timo, I haven't seen the new Bill and Ben. The old programme although by today's technical standards is poor, had a certain magic that can't be replicated.

Ok, a bit late but always worth it:

Andy Pandy
The Wombles (great for teaching kids eco stuff)
Rupert the Bear
Vision on (that mad Sylvester McCoy!?!?!?, what a hoot)
The Phoenix and The Carpet
Thunderbirds
The Secret Garden
A Pair of Jesus Boots/Rocky O'Rourke (or was just a book I read)

Anyone remember Kizzy about the gypsy girl. The main thing I recall of that programme is that the housekeep at the old man's house where she went to live said that a girl needed three of everthing "One on, one off and one in the wash" and I still do it to this day.

Hector's House was ace.

I have very fond memories of the Singing Ringing Tree; I read somwhere that the BBC had lost the reel and it will never ever ever be shown again. Now that made me sad.

I think one other person has mentioned the immortal Tiswas...

Ace programme - The Phantom Pie Flinger, The Cage where people got hosed down (think League of Gentleman - Papa Lazarou!), Sally, Chris and Lenny Henry...

And, I know I didn't dream this, but I used to come for dinner at lunchtime from junior school and Yorkshire (YTV) showed a cartoon called Gideon - about a swan with an amazingly long neck, who used to get in scrapes all the time... the crazy thing with this cartoon though, was it only last an average of 10 to 13 seconds!!! The theme tune was haunting too!!

Sport Billy - love it!

A programme that scared the living daylights outta me when I was young was Armchair Thriller (Theater?!), the opening scene used to show a long spindly shadow sitting down in a chair.....

Love Heidi too - Peter the goat boy, Urhe, Grandma, Clara and one of the best character names ever Fraulien Rottenmeyer!

Class tv:thumbsup:

That's "what lay beyond Little Weed", surely timo? ;)

Every time they said "the man who works in the garden has finished his dinner and is coming back" I always used to wonder what he'd had. Meat and potato pie with Henderson's relish, probably.

Has everyone forgotten the Multi-Coloured-Swap-Shop? It was the very first of the big Saturday morning shows and gave way to direct descendants Saturday Superstore, Going Live and Live & Kicking. Did anyone ever successfully swap anything on Swap Shop?

But the best one was ITV's competition (and I DON'T mean Tiswas!) Somebody had the brilliant idea of doing a live Saturday morning kids show aboard a Mersey ferry. Duggie Brown hosted from a specialy built glass dome studio on the open deck of the boat dressed in pirate uniform to tie in with the shows title of 'The Mersey Pirate'.

In those long gone days they didn't have all the computerised satellite links they have now, and getting a live TV signal from ship to shore seemed something of a challenge. It always went wrong in some was, which made it so bad it was good if you know what I mean.

The best one was when poor old Duggie thought he was getting through a show without any problems, then realised the ferry had docked 15 mins early and loads of Liverpudlians crowded aboard.
