View Full Version : Eastenders last night... cock up...
I know its only television and a soap… But I think script writers made a big boo boo last night…
Rosie told Keith that Darren had bought a present for him and was in the kitchen… Keith pulled a book from the bag which had been left on the kitchen table titled ‘Learn to Read’ Keith went mental… Rosie & Darren went running into the kitchen to see what all the commotion was about… Keith told Darren that the book was for 6 year olds and that he was taking the Micky… Darren’s reply was that they don’t do adult books etc…
:o uh!… I thought David Spinx's role was a character that couldn’t read?
wack wack oops! :hihi:
ha i noticed exactly the same thing!! do you know anyone who can't read? because a few episodes earlier when Darren showed Keith the job advert and he mistakenly looked at the Bus Driver one, can you not even associate words such as BUS and DRIVER? i think maybe i'm being very unsympathetic.

I dont know anyone who cannot read as i was thinking the same thing... Can people not read any words? maybe little words?
Thinking back when i was a child i couldnt really make any words out... Is this same for an adult?
I remember in my younger years teaching my Nan to write... i found that heartbreaking i was only about 8 at the time...

Some one with a low level of literacy & a basic understanding of phonics may be able to pick out "bus" maybe but someone who's totally illiterate would not. Although the aid of "clues" (like pictures etc) may help them disguise this.
Most of us take phonics for granted but it's not an innate ability - it does need to be taught.
yeah this is true. But i thought with having 40+ years on the earth of standing at a bus stop, recognising the letters BUS and knowing the word bus, that you must be able to start making some associations.
Look Eastenders is productive YES!

That might be true if "bus" were the only word on the sign but I don't think it is. I thought there was more information on them than that but it goes to show how we take reading for granted cos I'm not sure. I'll have a look this evening when I catch the bus into town...

That's stretching things a bit far :P
Eastenders is crap.. I only used to watch it to perve at Kat Slater's obscenely short skirts...
I gather she's coming back to EE soon as well...
does anyone here watch coronation street too? i heard that katie kills herself, is that true?

Defo True.... but lets not cross channels here.... :hihi:
There is a thread for Katie Arris...
Back to Topic...
Soaps try to bring real life situations to light... I just dont feel that Eastenders did well last night with Keith's script... :?
I'm sure someone asked Rosie how "her pete.." was the other day.. or that might be my hearing (straining over the steam from the iron!), does she have a relative called pete??
BobDaBuilder 05-04-2005, 17:56 I think you'll find that even a child could read the front cover of that book....hence Keith calling it a book for 6yr olds...
Just because ppl can't read dosn't necessarily mean they can't read a single word...I'm no good at maths but I know how to count and i'm probably a lot better than some.
I know how to add, subtract and multiply just the other things that spin me out.....so in my opinion I am no good at maths (Inumerate) but can still do some things...get what I mean...?
(Only askin cos i'm starting to confuse myself...lol)
Kthebean 05-04-2005, 20:11 I know a guy who's brother cannot read. He used to bunk off school all the time and kinda slipped through the net. He lives with his brother and they sell weed, to make money, so I suppose in a way he doesn't have to know how to read. He is a nice guy but very, very slow.
