Sheffield General Cemetery Dig In
Tuesday 27 May 10:00 - 12noon
Join the landscape team and find out about practical volunteer work in the cemetery.
Meet at the Sheffield General Cemetery Gatehouse, off Cemetery Avenue

If you have walked through the cemetery this spring you can't have failed to see how lovely it is looking. A team of enthusiastic volunteers work hard to keep it that way. You can join them for a Dig In this Tuesday 27 May and find out more about how you can get involved.

In recent years the landscape team have worked to develop the glorious garden areas of the cemetery, to maintain the paths and graves, conserve the wild areas and build attractive deadwood fences. These volunteers contribute much to make the cemetery a welcoming and accessible place for its many visitors. Dig In volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in general conservation work including care of trees, grass cutting and composting as well as general gardening work. Whether experienced gardeners or novices anyone with a willing pair of hands will be welcome.

The Sheffield General cemetery is a unique oasis in the heart of the city with a wealth of flora and fauna. As well as being the principal burial ground in Victorian Sheffield the cemetery contains 9 listed buildings and monuments and has a significant place in the history of parks in Britain. In 1999 it was added to the national Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, one of only 6 in the South Yorkshire region to achieve this status. It is also the burial ground of numerous well-known Sheffield figures including Mark Firth, the founder of Sheffield University.

Come to the Dig In on Tuesday 27 May and help to keep the General Cemetery beautiful for all to enjoy.
