Indeed they do Nick!
ps: I don't wish to get into a debate right now about Starbuck's ethical status - we've debated this soooo much.

Yup had a cup in the Division Street shop yesterday :)
They actually have a fair trade stall on the first Sunday of the month in Sheffield's catholic cathedral St Marie's, on Norfolk Row.
Sells coffee, chocolete, juice, hand-made cards and lots of other intersting things.
schwayne 05-04-2005, 10:27 was it £1.40?!!
schwayne 05-04-2005, 10:28 and also its not just starbucks fair trade policy - they only brought that in as a marketing reaction, they are also incredibly brutal on local markets, hence trying to open 3 in no time at all to squeeze out the competition...such as utopia and moco.....

But Utopia allows people to smoke! I should rather not sit in someone else's secondhand smoke whilst quaffing my espresso.
schwayne 05-04-2005, 10:50 agreed but at least its independant, besides in the summer u can sit outside! anyway smoke free and fair trade and not monster corporation are what im looking for!
JonJParr 05-04-2005, 10:53 So you don't shop in a supermarket?
schwayne 05-04-2005, 10:58 ok fair enough, of course, but starbucks just stinks of an overpowerful brand. nobodys perfect, but if theres an option of takeaway coffee from an indie for less then im sold.
wishdokter 05-04-2005, 12:23 As a coffe addict, I would much prefer to buy an organic, fair trade coffee from a small indie shop than a vampire telling it's customers exactly what they think they should hear.. i.e. have Starbucks always sold fairtrade?
I will try this new coffee shop... where is it?
schwayne 05-04-2005, 12:30 its number 8 st pauls parade - next door to ha ha bar in the peace gardens.......not a coffee shop per se....more a record/clothes shop with a little seating area doing fab coffee to take out or drink in
wishdokter 05-04-2005, 12:30 shwayne, what sort of music does this hidden Records sell? If it's someplace where you can listen to cool music and drink a fairly traded, organic coffee, then it will definately be 'the' place to check-out.
How much does Starbuck charge for a large Latte?
"Doctor your wishes Sir?"
schwayne 05-04-2005, 12:47 hmm not sure but i reckon its over 2 squids....dunno much about the place, but i think its mostly punk and indie, not sure. its a wicked little basement shop tho, done out all nice!
JonJParr 05-04-2005, 12:48 What do you mean by a 'punk / indie' coffee shop?
schwayne 05-04-2005, 12:50 no the other guy asked what kind of music they sold.....its a record and clothes shop, but they now have a coffee machine, selling for customers to sit and read mags, and also for takeaway.....i think the music is mostly punk, indie, stuff like that......

So let me get this straight, it's a clothes and record shop that also sells coffee? Huh? I'm guessing then that the shop assistants aren't baristas and as such have no training on how to create a latte / mocha / espresso?

So it's a record & clothes shop that happens to have a coffee machine that dispenses fair trade coffee.
Maybe you should have made this clearer at the start.
schwayne 05-04-2005, 12:56 completely wrong the guy who runs it has 4 years barista experience! it was tasty anyway

Why is he selling clothes and records then?

Personally I would rather buy an espresso-based beverage from an establishment that is in the coffee business so to speak. It's all to do with quality control.
What kind of machine does he use to brew his espresso?
schwayne 05-04-2005, 13:08 i think its a gaggia

Bloody hell, personally I'd rather buy an espresso-based beverage from an organisation that doesn't exploit the most vulnerable workers in the chain. It's all to do with justice!!!
Thanks for the tip - I'll definitely be checking out the record shop-cum-coffee provider; loving any shop that does things a bit differently!
