what pedigree?

Small breeds differ greatly - you'll need to look at what sort of lifestyle you lead to know what sort of dog would suit you, how much exercise/grooming/food it needs, for example. Also, some small breeds are more prone to health problems and what sort of time, effort and money you are willing to put into caring for one should it have these problems.

It could be easier to establish what your daily life is and then try and find a breed to suit.
I'm a big lover of cockers,which are small to medium breed.

we are interested in a few breeds, eg- Pomeranian, king charls spanial, bulldog, Lasa apso, Shih-tzu and yorkshire terrier. we want a great companion for our autistic son as he is unable to socialise with other children but is great with dogs. we need a small dog as we havnt got a very big home.

A lot of the smaller ones in my experience are either yappy or a bit nippy. Neither of which i would imagine to be of any benefit to your son. Someone may be able to recommend a calm dog type that would be a reassurance and offer interaction for your son.
I've heard good things about miniature schauzers,spaniels and whippets.

Can I point you in the direction of North Star Foundation? They're actually in America but are doing a British pairing with dogs for the disabled or Support Dogs this year.

They breed and train dogs specifically for autistic children and the puppy is brought up and trained whilst living with the child.

These dogs are usually labradors I believe but they are bred for autistic children specifically and are able to cope with their challenges.

Alternatively, speak to Support Dogs who I believe have started training dogs for autistic children as well, they are based in Sheffield too and I think you can even choose your own dog (ask their advice) and have it trained so you could have a smaller breed.

The benefit of having one of these dogs is it is permitted to go anywhere with your son and over the years will enable him to cope with new situations that usually he would struggle with.

I also know someone else on the forum who's autistic son has a dog and will mention this post to her as she may be kind enough to have a chat :)

Cavalier king charles spaniels are a small to medium sized dog. A lot of the ones you see around now are very small, they are breeding them smaller to fir on the show stands at crufts:rant:

I have an autistic/dispraxic/dyslexic daughter myself and I have 2 cavaliers, they are fantastic and are not snappy or nippy. They are more than happy to curl up on your knee, but spring to life when on walks and out and about. My two are the original sized cavaliers, and so far we have got no health problems with them.

Cavvies are brilliant - I love them and they are so good with children but please remember to get them insured like most pedigree dogs they can have problems with their eyes, ears and heart etc later on in life. I have had mine insured and it has saved me many hundreds of pounds in vets bills. My lovely mixed breeds rescues have never needed the vets except for spaying and vacs

You should be able to apply for support dogs to train your cavalier... the downside is, they spend all day with them, the upside is you have a dog that is specifically trained for your son and because it has a magic jacket, it can go everywhere with you.

hi all, just to let you know i have found the dog i have been looking for, i have put a deposit on the little king charls girl from 'john t'. as soon as i saw her i fell for her she is so cute, so are the others and mum, now i cant wait till she comes home she will be my little princess, 13 days to go. when i get her i will post pictures. just want to say thanks again for all your help. will keep intouch. luv emma xx

Actually, it's 11..lol....pop up and see her anytime.! Come collect her on the morning of the 9th June..So you an make an appointment with the vet for the same morning..
Think as you live near to me, we will be using the same vets...

im sorry i havnt posted latley iv been a little busy with my new addition. well i have finally got her home and what a gorgeous lovley little girl she is, she has settled in brilliantly, my son is in love with her they get on very well together, ruby is so good we bought her some training mats and she uses tham already she has only had 2 accidents since we got her,:D she is so clever. she has had her jab today and she really didnt like it at all, she cried and cried and crawled up me and hid behind my hair poor poor ruby :|, we got her home and she was fine for about an hour but then she went all sleepy, when she woke up she started crying and every so often she is still crying hope its just the effects of the jab, she is sleeping now though so if she wakes again and crys i will phone the vet just to be on the safe side he did say she will be a bit off for a while though.
i will post more pictures very soon so keep an eye open :D.

hi, just to let you know ruby is on top form today no crying from her at all :) infact she has gone :loopy: she has been none stop playing, im not complaining though she is so sweet when she plays, one minuite she is running around like mad then the next she flops down and looks up at us with her sweet brown eyes and pounces at us :hihi:. we are loveing every minuite with her:D.
