R_kid 23-05-2008, 10:58 AM was woundering if anyone had been to the carling academy and what it is like now they have scrubed it up a bit? the front still looks the same old scraggy n looks like it could do with a good wash, but with a new sign, n was thinking do the carpets still stick to your feet??
Katy. 23-05-2008, 10:59 AM oh yeh the floor is reaallly sticky up at the front near the stage

It's a place to see bands - does it matter what it's like inside? I've seen hundreds of bands and not once has the venue mattered (bar it being in a dangerous part of town).
To answer your question - it's been decorated a bit inside, and has less seating and carpets, and the choice of drinks is still as bad as ever.
Bilge 24-05-2008, 09:55 AM Not that keen on it as a gig venue. Just feels like a nasty corporate money-making machine.
If you have the misfortune to buy balcony tickets you won't be able to see anything of the act on stage unless you are on the front row standing against the barrier, or you are 7 feet tall. The fact that they happily sell loads of tickets for that area without caring about the punter's view of the stage says quite a lot about the venue's management.
princess_rockchick 24-05-2008, 12:22 PM I reckon i would still check this place out at some point. I remember when it was roxy's and i would have thought they have improved it since it was that. What are the nights like there? Was thinking of going to one at some point in time. What music does the night they put on play. I reckon they should have a rock night there at some point just for old times sake, but something tells me that probably will not happen.
EdnaKrabappe 24-05-2008, 12:27 PM Not been along yet to Transmission (sorry!) but it is affecting other club nights take in Sheffield at the moment and apparently it is very good. Will be going in the near future though not next weekend. (Hide and Seek peeps!)
Been to one gig so far and I like the venue.
In answer to Bilge, the management of Carling will take you seriously if you email them with a genuine complaint, but as in any venue, if you get to the front you'll get a better view!
discodown 24-05-2008, 12:39 PM I've been its huge, theres stuff I like and stuff I don't. Been to transmission and the sound system wasn't great I think it will be far better to see a band there rather than a club night but we'll see

I've seen thousands of bands and I think that the venue matters very much.
Nowadays the main problem with a lot of venues is that they have inadequate PA system which is good enough for a disco but not powerful enough for a live band. This results in not being able to hear the vocals properly when a live band is playing.
The Academy is primarily a Live Band venue and it has a superb PA system.
The Plug is primarily a Live Band venue and it has a superb PA system.
The Leadmill used to be a great live venue in the 1980s and early 90s but now it has a rubbish sound system which can ruin the sound of a band unless they are a quiet band.
Another thing which can ruin a venue is very expensive drinks. Not something that happens in the Academy, Plug or Leadmill, all fairly cheap.
But places like Manchester Apollo are extortionate.
The Boardwalk is a good venue which is spoiled by understaffing. Bar service can take 20 minutes when the venue is full and cloakroom can be left unguarded. It can also get very hot inside in the summer.
Other things that can frequently ruin live venues is appaling acoustics.
Sheffield Arena - Appaling acoustics because it is made of metal and too large
Brown Street - That venue had awful acoustics because one wall was an uncurtained window and it was like being in a reverb chamber or a tiled bathroom

I agree the PA matters - what building it is in doesn't - to me.
I also went to the Manchester Apollo last month - don't remember it being extortionate - not cheap as these places never are, but I wasn't there to drink.
lexatron 24-05-2008, 03:48 PM I went to transmission and had the worst night of my life. The music was bloody awful, it was just watered down, rubbish indie. I was groped nearly constantly by disgusting, horrible boys and the place was full of chavs. And I mean proper cap-wearing-elizabeth-duke-wearing chavs. The toilets were nearly all broken and covered in sick. And the bouncers were rude.
As a venue I'm sure it's brilliant and I think it's a great idea to have such a venue in Sheffield. I'm just disappointed that it could've been such a great place only for it to turn out to be a sh*t-hole infested with rejects from Embrace and ex-gatecrasher.
DoreOwl 24-05-2008, 04:33 PM I went to Transmission there last night, and as a venue I think its great but the main room is completely indie music and not good to dance to.
xbecx 25-05-2008, 02:02 PM I went to see Charlatans there on Friday and was impressed with it as a live music venue, good view of the stage (wasnt on the balcony), going to the bar didnt mean losing a view of the stage and got served quickly. The fact that Tim was on great form made it even better - and I dont really care about sticky carpets!
muddycoffee 25-05-2008, 02:16 PM It is far preferable to have sticky carpets in a live music venue than bare hard floors. Because if you go and see a band when the venue isn't completely full up, the acoustics are much better when there are soft furnishings in the room like carpets.
Also when the band is preparing before the public come in, the sound checks are slightly easier if the place is not a hard bare shell. This will mean that the sound engineers don't have to waste the first couple of songs rescuing the live sound. and it sounds good from the first note.
This is another reason why the sound at large venues like arenas are always poor. Because you need 10,000 people in the place to soak up the reverb.
missymarsbar 26-05-2008, 07:03 AM Roses smell of poo, poo, poo! I went in last week and my shoes stuck to the floor.....good sound system, but that's about it. Rest is poooooo and it'll only get more poo

toyally agree mate top night, nice sound n enough space to drink me pint without splashing it over the person who just barged passed me, will def go again. n can everyone chill about the carpet comment. was only trying to get a feel of what the venue was like? its been a while since i went to see hitman n her n just woundered if it was the same:D
I went to see the Kooks there with my girlfriend, everyone around us spent the gig alternating between enjoying the night and wiping off the booze which was getting down from the balcony ... sounds good, looks like a converted nightclub, not sure I'll be going back anytime soon
Ned Ludd 30-05-2008, 06:11 PM Sticky carpet:I thinks it's the finish/the material. I got down to have a shufti and it looked clean enough..and it didn't feel tacky to my hand as it did to my shod feet!
I don't like the way they serve drinks up at a gig and then try to get you out before you've even raised your glass 'cos the club nights about to start...... close the bars 30 minutes before you want the place empty I say.
It smacks of money grubbing.
They may as well say " You've paid your money, seen the band, now p*** off out because we can ship another bunch of punters in"
heeleyrachel 30-05-2008, 09:39 PM it still stinks like ****e too lol
jossyboy 03-06-2008, 09:01 AM went to see the pigeon detectives, view was ok was stood at the back but it does look like it's been done on the cheap, they could've at least cleaned up the tiles outside a bit it looks proper scruffy from the outside, not really a venue we can be proud of as such but at least it will bring some decent bands to sheffield, we've needed a mid-size venue for years,

all the best venues have sticky floors.
If you want luxury floor coverings and rooms smelling of flowers do not go to a live gig. All that you need is a good atmosphere, a good sound and to be close enough to the band you can see them without binoculars or a large video screen.
The best venues of all to see bands in are smaller club venues, but most bands do not want to spend a whole year touring tiny venues. This is why this venue is great news for live music fans.
I would argue that if you are bothered about your shoes and the sticky floor or getting a bit of beer thown about you should stick to your CD collection in your home. Gig going is all about a bit of rough and tumble, it is about coming out covered in sweat having had an excellent time.

amen to that brother:thumbsup:
dosxuk 03-06-2008, 11:52 PM The carpet was cleaned this weekend.
Agent Gypo 04-06-2008, 01:57 AM Decent venue, I can imagine bands like Radiohead playing there. I went to Transmission at the weekend and I had a good night with my mates... it's just the music makes me want to vomit.
goldenfleece 04-06-2008, 12:13 PM Gig going is all about a bit of rough and tumble, it is about coming out covered in sweat having had an excellent time.
Totally agree there. One does not go to a gig in ones Sunday best, and one does certainly expect to be covered in beer, have a few crushed toes, and generally emerge from a battlezone....great fun:)
ElectricPop 05-06-2008, 11:28 AM Me and my mates went to the Hed Kandi ' Back To Love ' live and loved it. There is another Hed Kandi event. Hed Kandi- World Series. The San Francisco Shindig on Sat 14th June. Should be good:D

I don't know. I think San Francisco is the theme name for the night. Not sure whether or not any of the dj's actuallly come from there.

132345 11-06-2008, 03:11 PM Hi, just wondering if anyone's been to HedKandi there and has any comments?
Thanks
Carling Academys Hedkandi sessions once a month are just brilliant. Drinks are a bit expensive but cocktails are well priced - personally you get more booze in them anyways lol.
