I used to go out with them a couple a times a week many moons ago. halevan 05-03-2003, 20:47 Dont go with the veterans, I rode with them a few years ago and they nearly killed me, they had got more energy than someone half their age. Then, when my cycle broke down they rode away and left me to walk home alone from twenty miles away, in addition to that all of them apart from one were so nasty, I couldnt talk to them. That taught me a lesson I never forgot, I never rode with anyone else, much preferring to ride alone after that experience.   alchresearch 05-03-2003, 22:18 Too many hills round Sheffield to make it enjoyable! You bust your guts trying to get up a hill (imagine trying to go up Kent Road at Heeley!) and then are too knackered going down the other side to enjoy the view! I used to do a lot of cycling from Kiveton. Start at the station and head south. There are miles and miles of almost flat country lanes, right down to Whitwell and to Creswell Crags. Cycling around Ladybower is also a great start. The entire circuit of the upper dams is approx. 20 miles. But go early if you want a car parking space. They are all filled by about 10am on weekends, even earlier in summer. nomme 06-03-2003, 12:56 Originally posted by "Shocker" Does anybody know of any "amateur" cycling clubs that join up maybe once a week/fortnight and does not entail too much energy? :) Try this site - I'm sure they'll be able to help you out : The Sheffield Cycle Campaign : http://www.pedalpushers.org.uk/ Nomme Lickszz 06-03-2003, 15:43 Originally posted by "alchresearch" Too many hills round Sheffield to make it enjoyable! I think the hills are a challenge and also there is some beautiful trails right on the doorstep of Sheffield....We are so lucky to live so close to those. PaulTansley 19-04-2003, 11:06 I am a member of Sheffield Tri Club who dont specialise totally on cycling but also run and swim. The cycling side is a decipline i focus on and ride many miles a week often in the week and some weekends and race with the veterans. Paul I'm guessing this is for racing bikes and not mountain bikes.. :?: I got a new mountain bike for christmas and have only used it once to go just down the road.. I could also do with something to get me out of the house away from the computer and get fit at the same time.. PaulTansley 01-06-2003, 21:31 See Alchresearch notes about Derwent, that would be a good start on a mountain bike course and yes i was talking about road bikes. mikey 02-06-2003, 08:48 I did the Derwent Dams round trip cycle a couple of weeks ago. At Ladybower (A57) turn right towards Derwent Dam, you can park up at a small car park/ visitor centre. Then you can cycle all the way around the upper dams, I'd say its about 8 miles. I always go clockwise from the car park, take the road up the left with the dam on your right. Keep going until you get to slippery stones and then you begin to return back to the car park. 1st bit on nice flatish road then its off road on a stoney path (Flatish) then its back to road and downhill playman 01-08-2003, 21:31 Get hold of a copy of cycling in sheffield or the sheffield cycle map or the trans penine trail, depending on where you live there are lots of good trails to utilise, i cycle to work doing about 80-90 miles a week mainly on the trans penine. paul h Brandy 19-05-2004, 16:13 Hi I am new to cycling / mountain biking and would like to know some off road cycling routes around Sheffield and out into the peaks. Can anyone help? Thanks jackthedog 19-05-2004, 16:20 Hello and welcome :) Check out the Sports and Activities forum, there's a thread organising a ride out in the peaks sometime soon! Why not join em! Senny 19-05-2004, 16:54 Brandy, There are loads, with lots of guide books available. It depends on what you like, but if you have just started, maybe you want something gentle? If so, try the derwent reservoir - park just before the bridge that goes up to the snake pass, cross the road and there is a track/path/occasional bit of quiet road that goes along the side of the reservoir, over the reservoir at the top, then you can carry on on the other side on the road (closed to traffic at the weekend) until you get to more offroad at slippery stones (where you can swim of you are brave!) then back the other side on a track. This makes a nice circuit of maybe 5 miles (I am bad on distances). To try a bit more of a mountain bike track, try the old road from the Fox house back to ringinglow (If you park at the fox house, come back along the road to Sheffield for 1/2 mile or so, past a drive to a farm, and on the left is a gate leading to the track. This is only a couple of miles if that, but nicely bumpy, and leads to a road where you can loop back towards Burbage. Wherever you go around Sheffield there are lots of quiet roads or hellish downhill offroads, depending on your taste! dragonsoup 20-05-2004, 08:18 Tissington trail which is an old raiway line that runs through the peaks would be good. Not sure where it starts but you can pick it up near a village called Winster not far from Bakewell/Chatsworth. Someone on here should know where it starts/finishes. Good luck matt1986 26-03-2005, 22:43 Anyone know any good mountain biking or cycling clubs? Im looking to join one to get the bike out once again and to meet new people. wildnorthlands 11-04-2005, 14:00 Pedal Pushers Sheffield Cycle Campaign starts its programme of summer rides this Wedesday the 13th April, for those who prefer not to drive to the gym to use an exercise bike. The first ride is a Very Easy ride to the Cricket Inn, Totley, and starts from the Winter Gardens, Surrey St at 17:30. Thereafter there will be a ride every week in conjunction with the Cyclist's Touring Club. Destinations vary - sometimes we head for a local park or cafe , other times we might go to look at some of the cycle-friendly projects that are taking shape around the city. If you'd like to come along email ppmail@shu.ac.uk or phone 0785 4803195 to confirm. It's a great way to meet fellow cyclists and get some exercise. Rides could be short or long, slow or fast or a combination of these depending on who shows up and what they fancy doing. Cyclists of all abilities are very welcome. gaz327 17-04-2005, 22:01 im looking for a group of people who go cycling at weekends, 30/40 miles average around the peak district with road bikes Dug 18-04-2005, 13:12 Try Sheffrec CC http://www.sheffrec-cc.org.uk/ They meet every Sunday morning 9am at Malin Bridge, and Tuesday and Thursdays during the summer after work. The first time I used it, I asked the driver how much the fare was and he said £1.40. Each time I have used the service, I have paid £1.40 (until the fare increase) and never has this been questioned. I boarded the bus at Manor Top and asked for a £1.50 fare as normal. When we got to Catcliffe the driver stopped at the bus stop and shouted at me to get off. I went towards the driver and explained to him that I normally paid £1.50 and that it was a genuine mistake, one that had come from a previous driver. He said I had to get off or pay again. I said I would not pay again, that I would give him my ticket for a new one that had £1.80 on the fare. He refused to do this, so I said I would not get off the bus. I sat down and he refused to drive, leaving a bus full of angry people wanting to get home.
