We are moving into a new property - the front door is steel - the backdoor is french windows - where could we put a cat flap - someone suggested taking a few bricks out the house? to fit it? In the french window would be good as it has 2 side panels behind curtains it could be fitted in one of these, but who would you contact to do it and can it be done?

Thanks

it could posibly be cheaper to have it fitted in to one of the glass panels of the french doors but you have to purchase a new glass panel & let the manafactures of the panels fit the cat flap.

i've never heard of been able to fit a catflap in brick but i know you can fit them in to glass, plastic & wood. my OH fitted a catflap in to a glass panel for a friend so it is posible. you would need to phone some of the smaller double glazing firms & get quotes first.

I think you can fit into brick - some cat flaps come with a tunnel that fits in he brickwork and fastens onto the outside and inside bits of the cat flap try Staywll's website- can't remember the name of the other big catflap manufacturere

i would fit the flap in the upvc panel ,fairly easy job just cut the panel out with a jigsaw fit the flap into the hole and seal round with silicone.job done.

Thanks for all your replies - my son broke a neighbour's window last year and they used a small window company that was very reasonable to fix it (just as well as we had to pay for it :( ) so maybe I will give them a call once we moved and see what they say!

At the moment, the cat sits at the window when it wants in and out and it drives us all crazy - you know how fussy cats can be, they want out one minute and then back in again - a cat flap would be wonderful!

I've put a flap through a brick wall, wasn't that difficult - more a case of brute force than finely-honed DIY skills. I'd not recommend it if there's an easier way - in my case it was either the wall, through the upvc front door or through a double glazed french window out the back.
