View Full Version : Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
This isn't happening!? Why would they remake such an amazing movie!!?? Well, I guess they thought it would be better to redo the movie, rather than make a sequel, unless that is another idea they have!!
Verified Cast:
Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka
Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket
Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Bucket
David Kelly as Grandpa Joe
Harry Taylor as Mr. Gloop
Ty Dickson as Oompa Loompa
Missi Pyle as Ms. Beauregard
Christopher Lee as Willy Wonka's Father
Jordan Fry as Mike Teavee
AnnaSophia Robb as Violet Beauregarde
Julia Winter as Veruca Salt
Philip Wiegratz as Augustus Gloop
Burton's next film recently finished filming in London and is currently in post-production. Rather than being a remake of the 1971 Gene Wilder film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Burton's movie will reportedly be a more faithful adaptation of Dahl's novel.
johnny depp, I bet hes way hot as mr wonka :heyhey:
Cutglass 04-04-2005, 13:48 Johnny Depp is way HOT in anything :wow:

I thought the original may not have been to the letter the same as the book but it was very similar and the "feel" of it I thought was perfectly judged.
But I'd still love to see Tim Burton's interpretation.
And on another topic, is it my imagination or did they make a film of the sequel? I have a memory of seeing it, but I may have been dreaming it!
That Grandpa Joe, what an old fraud...spends years in bed compalining that he's decrepit and past it, but then the second a freebie's dangled under his nose he's up and leaping about like Lazarus at a break-dancing competition!

Is it ok to fancy Willy Wonka? Its sooo wrong, but it feels so right with the delectable Mr Depp...
Wonder if I could have a small walk on part as Mrs Wonka?

I bet he was claiming incapacity benefit as well! I hope the DSS were watching the televised opening of the factory!

Could the whole chocolate factory really be an elaborate DSS sting operation?
This isn't the only movie they have! i also noticed that they are in the process of making another Die Hard, Indiana Jones 4, and even Jurassic Park IV! Honestly, I thought after the first Jurassic Park, they should've stopped! As for Die Hard, I wouldn't mind seeing Bruce Willis reprising his role, except this time he is supposedly suppose to be a retired NY cop! As for Indiana Jones 4, Harrison Ford is in his 60's now, hopefully he can do all the stunts, more power to him!! There's also a talk of a Men in Black 3!

Most films going back to the dawn of Hollywood history have been adaptations of plays, books and historical incidents!
Other's come up with the original ideas, Hollywood just buys the rights to whatever's selling, chops off all the prickly bits and regurgitates it onto the big screen.
although, some pre-quels, re-makes and sequels have been fantastic and some of those made from the best selling books.
it doesn't matter what it is, if you enjoyed it - then job done !!

Just hope that there's someone out there who can still be bothered to write those quirky old books that fuel the Hollywood fires...who wants to be watching Legally Blonde 12 in the year 2030?
I was hoping they would give the role of Mr Wonka to a talented actor :(

He is a damn good actor! So many different characters - the only thing they have in common is that they're so quirky.
But anyway - here's a link to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer...

jonny depp is a great actor you fool..whats wrong with him???
Moonfire 04-04-2005, 18:46 Johnny Depp and chocolate... what more could a girl ask for ;)
I saw the trailer to it today and I have already said that I'm going to take the eldest to see it even though he hasn't got round to reading the book yet
I saw it advertised at the cinema last week.
He doesn't look attractive I'm afraid girls. Too much of a pudding basin haircut.
I'm glad there's a remake, the old version is pretty rubbish IMO and I'll be glad of Tim Burtons brilliant slant on it.
If Depp manages his character as professionally as normal and with the usual level of talent then he will be great. Benny & Joon, Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands... (oh and that brilliant one shot in real time where his daughter is kidnapped... something Time) shows the kind of characters he is capable of. What a sexy genius!
As I understand it, this film is not a remake of the film with Gene Wilder in it. It's got nothing to do with it, except that they're based on the same source material. It's no more a remake than Baz Luhrman's 'Romeo And Juliet' is of Franco Zeffirelli's version.
Speaking personally, I can't stand the old 'Willy Wonka' film - while I like Gene Wilder in loads of things, I think he's completely wrong for Wonka. The film as a whole is much too bright, and the lad who plays Charlie Bucket is cringingly awful.
I have high hopes for Tim Burton's version - I have a feeling he really understands the spirit of Roald Dahl (who didn't like the old film himself, for what it's worth). But I will reserve judgement till I've seen it. Must admit that I'm looking forward to it though, and so are my kids.

By that definition you couldn't really call anything a remake surely? The old one still exists no matter what.
Fair point, but if it used the same songs and plot as the old film then I would call it a remake. I suspect this won't be the case - there are significant plot differences between the Gene Wilder film and the book after all, and I'm expecting the new movie to be much closer to the book.
Though I may be wrong. :)

Hey Lily!
Indy 4, eh? Will Sean Connery be playing his dad again? Cos thats gonna be a little hard pushed to portray now that they're both a bit older, cos isn't Sir Sean about 75? Making him approximately 10 when he fathered the young Henry Jones Jnr.
They obviously start them early in Scotland...:hihi:

He only ever plays weirdos, freaks or loonies, so he doesn't have to act like a "normal" person, but most of his fans don't care as long as he looks nice.

I agree! He is a good-looking man, but he doesn't look good in this role! He might actually be able to pull it off though! He did play Edward Scissorhands!! Remember how young he was in that role and how shy he looked!!??

Yes, you read that right! It was being talked about!! My mums sent me an e-mail the other day talking about all sorts of things and that was one of things mentioned in it!! Wondering if Sean Connery would reprise his role or if he would say he was to "old," I doubt it though!!
I want to see Hollywood or any director do a more realistic themed movie! Either that or maybe someone just needs to sit on their bum and think of something that has never been done before!!

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I did find two roles that were "normal" for Johnny Depp! In 'Finding Neverland' and in the movie 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape!' That's all I could find!! What is his obsession with the freakish roles though!?

is it using all the old songs etc?
loved the old version - even though technically its crap, it makes me happy and the songs are fun - sing one it'll cheer you up!!
altogether now
'umpa lumpa doppy a de doo, i've got another puzzle for you....'
BTW - am i the only female who doesn't fancy Mr Depp ?
My pop brought a good point to me yesterday: How do the Umpa_Lumpa's keep reproducing!? And while you ponder that think of this: How did the Smurf's reproduce? Yes there was that one female smurf, but she wasn't there when the show first aired!!:suspect: :suspect:
there are females umpa pumpa's - you can tell if look closely, they have boobies and longer hair!
There is something very wrong about Umpa Lumpas.

not just the Umpa_Lumpa's!!
one of my colleagues thinks its very dark and has evil undertones !!!
It's certainly a dark story but I wouldn't say it has evil undertones. It's just exceptionally moral - the kids who misbehave get their come-uppance and the kid who is good gets the goodies in the end. It's standard fairy story stuff really, but Dahl's broad, black comedy has ensured it stands the test of time.
http://chocolatefactorymovie.warnerbros.com/
you can view the trailer there! Not once did I see an umpa lumpa!! Wonder what they look like! You know that had to have changed their appearance some how!
the only bit i can think of that really scared me in the film was when they go through the tunnel on the chocolate river, faster and faster with all the images on the wall - bombs blowing up and what most upset me was the chicken having its head cut off !!
anyone know what that was all about ?

BRUTALITY!? Maybe! Was wondering that myself!! while watching that trailer of the movie, I would appreciate if Johnny didn't smile as much as he does! He looks like a stalker or something!!
So has anyone else watched the film yet ? I thought it was pretty good - it's a pity I watched the other version on telly a week ago as I was comparing the two versions instead of comparing it to the book [Mr Dahl's descendants say this is a better version as it sticks to the book more].
Loved the way Mr Depp holds the scissors when he opens the factory and also the Mike TV bit with the 2001: space odyssey links. Also like the Wonka family history and the ending that is really different from the other film. Some good laughs but the ooompa loompa singing was annoying at times as lyrics not all that clear [they digitally cloned a single oompa loompa and lip-synced all sorts of singing styles on the clones].
Loved how Wonka treats Mike TV and talks to Verucca :P
Glad they had the squirrels rather than the Golden Geese - will keep an eye out for them next time I'm walking in the park, just in case they decide i'm a bad nut
:)
Oh, one last thing - make sure you're not sat next to someone with the world's largest tub of popcorn like i was - he must have been rustling and munching the stuff a piece at a time for over an hour - really annoying !
We took our daughter to see it last night. She had watched the original earlier in the day and wanted to see the new one.
I thought Depp was his usual brilliant self. Is there any role he can't fill?
The ooompa Loompa's were just wrong. I liked the story behind how they came to be there though. The squirrels were amazing. I can remember reading that they had to pause filming for months due to the squirrels being trained. It was worth the wait
Overall i thought there was some damn fine acting going off in this film. I wouldn't even attempt to chose the best version because i like them both. My daughter liked the new best though
Where can i buy one of those elevators? I must have one! :heyhey:

Maybe you should enquire at the Great Glass Elevator Candy Shop ?

Just make sure you put some of those round yellow stickers on it like they have at the tram stops, so you don't walk into the thing by mistake :P
absynthfairy 05-08-2005, 15:53 I thought it was alright.
No more, no less.
I LOVE Time Burton, LOVE Johnny Depp - but I don't think it was either of their best work. Johnny was a little bit TOO edward scissorhands for my liking - and that's my favouritest ever film.
I didn't like the Wonka's family history sub-plot. Entirely uneccesary.
I also didn't like the way the things that happened to the kids seemed pre-destined, wonka made no effort to prevent what was happening or show any real remorse - he was almost gleeful.
I thought there was NO chemistry between Charlie and Wonka and that Charlie got the factory because he was the only child left, not because he was the only "good" child.
This is a moral story about how being a good person will win you rewards, not just physical, in the long run - i don't think that came over - not enough anyway.

Nicely summarised fairy :)
Although, can't comment too much given that I spent much of the film admiring how beautiful Johnny Depp looks close up... :heyhey:
PIPER1978 09-09-2005, 17:34 I honestly think that Johnny Depp based his character on Michael Jackson, all the way through the film I thought that he reminded me of him... did anyone else think the same??
I watched the film the other night and i must admit i have been traumatised ever since !!!
I found it all to be very surreal and disturbing...and deffinately not for kids! There is one scene where the squrrels come and get Verruca salt...its more scary than Hitchcock!! I have had nightmares ever since. The ooompa looompa was the same bloke...digitally en-massed..OOOhhh it was horrible! But i find all Tim Burton stuff horrible.
I much prefer the first one as its innocent and lighthearted. This version was dark and has so many underlying messages...like Depp being based on Michael Jackson ..in every way!
.....If you think anything of your kids dont show them this film...only as a punnishment.!:o
