Ive recently bought a laptop and networked it to the PC through my wireless router so i can share files, however now i cannot access internet on my PC but my laptop internet connection is fine.

Using the MSN troubleshooter, it says my "default gateway" is the problem, but when i look it up on internet, its just people with browser internet working (which mine doesn't) and their msn being the problem.

ive tried multiple system restores but it just fails because their isn't anything to restore (i think). Ive also reset my internet setting, which doesn't solve the problem.

I think that it is the Internet settings because i am able to access files on my PC on my laptop.

any ideas?

PS. i really don't want to re-install my wireless router in case i risk losing my internet connection on my laptop

Hi, assuming you are running Windows xp, firstly you will need to find if you PC is connected to your router OK, to do this click on Start > Run and type "cmd" and press return. if the default gateway is 192.168.x.x then the issue will more than likely your firewall or something similiar.

Hope this helps

right, iv'e entered cmd into "run" and entered ipconfig, but ip shows as 0.0.0.0, same for subnet mask and default gateway is blank

ive got the IP address of laptop and tried to ping it from pc but "destination host is unreadable"

ive done msn troubleshooter again and not it fails at IP, but i dont know how to resolve this. ive tried renewing my ip address through network options but it fails before it can finish.

UPDATE
Ive somehow managed to resolve ip problem by making ip address 192.168.1.2, ipconfig works now but still no default gateway showing in "run".....
MSN troubleshooter has gone back to default gateway being the problem, although now i can ping my laptop from pc but cant ping the pc from my laptop

any more ideas?

just curious, is the laptop and pc connection "bridged" ?
