I have a 7 and half month old chiuahua(sp) called Romeo. Hes a lovely dog but when we have visitors he has started to live up to his name and tries to hump their arms/legs!!! does he need 'doing'? Or is he just a randy bleeder..:hihi::hihi::hihi:

I think that's the same thing! He's a randy bleeder who needs doing!

There are ways you can train them out of it, but if you're not going to breed from him it's fairer for him to be 'done'.

It's not fair imo to allow a dog to have a sex drive but never allow him to do what comes naturally and if he's already started humping, he obviously wants to do it! Plus, a lot of people don't like it and it's not a good way of making dogs more acceptable to a society that is rapidly going off dogs!
That's not to say I think you should mate him as there's already plenty of dogs needing homes!

There are also health benefits to having a dog castrated, and you are allowed to show a neutered dog now, but if you were wanting to keep his tessies for show or you may want to breed from him in the future but you're not sure yet or you want to wait to see there is now an implant available as an alternative to castration that makes the dog infertile as well as reducing the testosterone levels.

I'll try and find the details for you.

Get his testosterone levels down! There are dogs who do it regardless of being neutered (and I'm thinking of a particular shihtzu here- he's got a thing for Molly although she has to lie down for him to jump on her) but there's less chance of it happening with lower androgen levels.

oh thanks lotti, not sure on what to do with him yet so the implant thing may sound good for now!!

Another thing to consider is that this little mite is being dominant to the visitors. Dogs will often do this to each other and its not for sex!! Even little dogs who you expect to be compliant can be dominant in fact sometimes they are worse than the big ones. It might help to lower his standing with the newcomers. It makes sense really, these visitors are interlopers and he is showing them just where they stand in his pack, ie bottom. I bet he lays on the furniture etc ???

yes he goes on the setee..and i have only noticed its when people are in the house ..infact when i was playing with him he was running around thn got my arm and tried it with me. The other was my nephew was playing with my son on the floor and the other time was when a friend visited and he just started trying to hump her arm.

Good thought estweyn- if he's mostly doing it to visitors it could be nothing to do with sex and everything to do with status.

Which is often connected to being entire ;)

At his age, it's common for him to be experimenting with this behaviour anyway.

I have been advised by a veterinary nurse that she wouldn't choose to use the implant but I will still have a go at finding the details so you can discuss it with your own vet :D

and of course at 7 1/2 months he's going to be a randy, hormonal "teenager".

(as well as the "dominance thing").

get him "done", it usually calms them down a treat, plus, he'll be a happier, healthier, longer- lived dog.

My little girlie Jack-russell is booked in to be done next week (couldn't get her in this week) so next thursday, she's off to the "VEE- EEE- TEES" ;) (shhh!) to be "doctored".
