View Full Version : Please help me with my router
ls212121 04-04-2005, 12:27 I live in a shared appartment block so dont have a modem, I just plug my PC straight into the wall via a Ethernet patch cable. To recieve the internet I have all the TCP/IP setting on detect automatically and this works fine.
I then added a router, at the moment it is only connected to 1 PC and the wall but it wont get onto the internet. It often dispalys the message "limited or no connection to internet"
I have written down the ip addresses the pc gets when there is no router connected and entered these manually but this still doesn't work.
The router assigns the pc a different ip address when it detects automatically through the router.
I have also looked on Google and downloaded a patch that is supposed to help but it didn't. Please help i'm at my wits end. The router is a Sitecom WL-114 and is wireless though i'm not currently trying to use it as wireless, my pc is connected to it via cable.
Have had a quick look at the manual on the sitecom website and the quickstart quide appears quite good. Have you worked your way through that? Give it a go and shout if you get stuck with details of exactly where.
ls212121 04-04-2005, 12:55 I have been through the manual several times, I get stuck on chapter 7 when it asks you to enter the address http://192.168.123.254 in the browser. I just get page not found.
My PC is saying there is limited or no connectivity because the network did not assign an address to the computer.
Off the top of my head that sounds like your PC is currently set to obtain it's IP from the router using DHCP, but is failing. Check that any DHCP option is enabled in the router as a starter.
ls212121 04-04-2005, 13:16 how do i do that? Thanks for any help.
Yes, that's a point. Doh. If you can't get to the router's config page you'll not be able to turn it on. Stupid me. Let me have a think/read....

Here's some thing you could try. Go to Start >> Run, type 'cmd' to get a command prompt.
At the command prompt type:
Ping 192.168.123.254
If you get four replies then you have a connection to your router.
If it times out type:
ipconfig
This will should display the IP address of your computer. Having not used this router I would assume that the router should assign you and IP address begining with 192.
If your IP address doesn't begin with 192 type
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew
This should update your IP address with one assigned by the router.
Let us know how you get on. :-)
ls212121 04-04-2005, 15:02 I tried this yesterday and it didnt work, when I pinged it all the connections failed. I have come to the conclusion its a bit faulty and have taken it back, its being repaired and should be back in about 2 weeks. Thanks for all your help guys
Sorry to hear that - it's always disappointing when a new purchase doesn't work. Still, at least you can still get online and enjoy the forum ;)
It sounds like you're trying to route a routed connection.
The connection you just hook up to at your wall sounds like it's from a router that shares connections with the rest of the apartments. If that's the case, I'm not sure whether you can plug a router into a router or not. I could be completely misinterpreting your post though.
ls212121 04-04-2005, 16:32 I did wonder about that but I've had it working in the appartment a few months ago and others in the block are able to use routers. I'll see what the shop come back with.
You should be able to set up a router to be "transparent" to other devices. It may not be an out-of-the box set-up, but I think the main issue was that it wasn't DHCP-ing on it's client-side and ls212121 couldn't browse to it's webserver config page. As the PC seems to function OK, it could well have been a dodgy router.
