If possible, avoid downloading anything with a ZIX extension.

The creators of WinZix are most certainly liars, and potentially also crooks, virus mongers and scam artists.
Anyone using their software to produce and spread ZIX archives are their cronies. Whether out of malice, greed or plain ignorance, they help proliferate the spread of this spyware and earn money for the WinZix distributors.
Therefore:

Never heard of it, but thanks for the warning. A quick Google confirms what you say, and it seems to have been around for a while. Is this a torrents issue? I've never come across ZIX files on Usenet... Mind you, I did get bitten by an annoying and pernicious Trojan earlier today off Usenet because I wasn't careful enough :loopy:

Yes has been around a while there is a lot on Torents crafty they normally RAR file them but when you unzip RAR file then its a ZIX file that has to be unziped seems to be more arround once again.
