View Full Version : Summer film releases.
I'm sure there was a thread about this months ago but can't find it.
This summers film releases are going to keep me out of pocket as I will be at the cinema most of the time. To me it is a whole lot better than the past two summers. I have already started with Constantine and Robots, I am going to see Downfall, the Machinist this week I hope and the life Aquatic before it finishes.
The films I want to see this summer including the above are, Batman begins, War of the Worlds, Fantastic 4 (not sure on release date), Hitchikers guide to the Galaxy, League of Gentlemans apocalypse, Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory and of course Star wars ep' III. I think I have missed out a couple in that list but it should keep me busy anyway.
What do you want to see?
Oooh, I've heard from about half a dozen people that the Life Aquatic is one of the worst films ever made. Maybe save yourself a fiver on that one!
Agent Gypo 04-04-2005, 09:19 I would love for War of The Worlds to be good.
Unfortunately, it stars Tom Cruise and has Steven Spielberg at the helm. Oh dear...
The Machinist was just plain weird but not in a David Lynch's 'Naked Lunch' compelling kinda way. It's been likened to the fantastic 'Memento' (Guy Pierce) and i can understand the comparison in terms of context and style but other than that it bears little resemblence
The underlying story and justification for the film is quite good but as a spectacle i wouldn't bother
I would not mind watching that Amityville Horror.

I am a cine-freak - usually keep an eye on Showroom cinema - but have to say I thought Constantine was a cool bit of entertainment!
The Life Aquatic was a bit out there - but worth watching just to hear David Bowie sung in portuguese. The ping island tune stuck in my head for weeks too.
Saw The Machinist in Nottingham at the end of last year - original story but that's about it. A skeletal Christian Bale is probably the most memorable bit.
Downfall was excellent - didn't even notice the 2.5 hours go by. I may be coming from a weird angle but seeing the reaction of a group of idealists watching their dreams go down the tube is damn interesting!
If there are any good movie recommendations out there let me know!
BTW - check out www.rottentomatoes.com for a good selection of reviews
thebodgie 04-04-2005, 11:59 BTW - if you're up for good acting and a great script check out 'Sideways'. I know it's on at Odeon cinema this week.
I've seen it 4 times in the last couple of months and am thinking of seeing it again tonight. It is THAT good!!
redrobbo 04-04-2005, 12:00 Get yourself a UGC £9.99 a month season ticket (minimum membership, 12 months). Watch most new releases to your hearts content, and save loads of dosh. I saw 153 films in my first years membership.

Great - i'm glad i'm not the only one who liked this film! The bond company stooge and the "stupid" dolphins were damn funny.
I had to buy the soundtrack when I got out of the cinema... the ending with David Bowie's Queen B*tch in the background left me on a high!
A bit of a sprawling story but definitely original
Sin City, Sin City, Sin City.......

I think Tim Burton's macabre style makes him the only director who can do justice to Roald Dahl's sinister style. And Johnny Depp looks suitably creepy!!
Looking forward to it!

Batman, you say?
And who will be playing the caped crusader in this big screen outing?
I hope they've kept the black rubber look... ;)

Christian Bale is Batman in this one. Hope he's put some weight back on after his role in the Machinist!

I hope they've kept the black rubber look... ;) They can keep what they like as long as they get rid of Robin, Bat Girl, camp villains played by has-beens and the comedic flavour of the month and above all Val the Untalented as the Dark Knight!

i suppose he is the noly one who could do it best. it is my favourite childhood film and book so i'm just scared of having memories of it spoiled.
when is it out ?? is it still a musical ?

Christian Bale? Hmmm... Always thought of him as quite s erious actor, so this means that the new one won't be the cheese-fest of the previous few? :(
Also, who is the baddie?
In the first Batman movie, they made out that it was the Joker (before he became the joker) who shot Bruce's parents... Will they gloss over this, or will it be incorporated into the story?

As far as the villain goes, I think it's a combination of the Scarecrow and an oriental gangster type from Bruce Wayne's days in the East learning the martial arts he employs later as Batman.
films coming out i want to see are, the ring 2, only because i saw the ring one...hichikers guide to the galaxy, need explaining? and willy wonka thingy because of jonny depp mmmm

Just a bunch of uninspired remakes, prequels and sequels.
Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin...sheer and unadulterated casting genius.

I see a couple of interesting ones in that list both filmed in New Zealand:
9. King Kong
10. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
Peter Jackson's King Kong looks excellent - I read the '96 script before he did LOTR - check out www.kongisking.net for production video updates.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. And I thought the cringingly Enid Blytonesque BBC adaptations were enough punishment for my sinful ways...but no, it seems that the Devil is once more sitting on a tram, twiddling his thumbs until he reaches his stop, where he will walk the short distance to my home, knock politely on the door, walk into my bedroom and vomit on the bedclothes again!
Cheers Bodgie, I forgot to mention Sideways, and also the Chorus (or is it Choir?) Was thinking of getting a £9.99 pass to UGC but after this summer I will not go again for a long time probably

Ok now I certainly want to see it :D

Yeah The Chorus is a "nice" movie.
Maybe i've just been too spoilt with French movies recently as it's not as sugar-coated as Amelie or A Very Long Engagement, and not as laugh-out-loud as The Dinner Guest or The Closet.
It is a good film though - I'd class it as a date flick.
The assasination of Richard Nixon interests me, I read up a small piece on the film and will try to get to it.
Lots of interesting films are coming out this year but the one I'm really looking forward to (comic geek fanboy that I am) is Sin City...looks very striking and exceptionally violent....hmmmmm lovely.

Hey duffman, Fantastic Four comes out this summer on the 8th of July!!!
Out of the forthcoming films I want to see:
Batman Begins
Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (I think we should have a meet for that as loads want to see it)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Not bothered about Fantastic 4 as I think it'll be just another crap comic to movie crossover.
