WHERE HAVE ALL THE PENNY MIXERS GONE?

I remember when i was a kid and I used to love going to get a penny mix when my mum had given me my spending money. The other day i felt nostalgic andwanted one. I searched nearly all of sheffield for one! Yes there were a few corner shops that did them and newsagents but the selection was so poor and due to inflation they were not all 1p anymore.

Does anyone else remember penny mixes?

Here are a few a can remember:

Shrimps, cola bottles, fruit salads, white and brown mice, mice with a strawberry center, golf ball chewing gum, refreshers, tabs, drumsticks, gummie bears, cherrys, lips, toothbrushes, bananas....

Did anyone else love them too? Or am i sad?! lol

There are some local shops near my old stomping grounds in Gleadless Valley still do mix's as you say.

There is a fruit n veg shop that has done them since the dawn of time. It's situated on the Hemsworth Shop's (AKA Gaunt Shops) opposite the John O'Gaunt Pub. There is also a mini sumpermarket run by an asian guy called 'mick' who does them too, on the same row of shops. I sometimes (infrequently) pop into mick's and the veg shop for a 50p or £1 mix up (I'm greedy).

They still have loads at just 1p each.

But if you really wanna go the whole hog, just nip to macro and buy your own tubs. Make as many mix up's as you like.

Mmmmmm just for that, I might make a special trip over to Gleadless for a mix!

always used to ask for the sweets on the top shelves, but the canny shopkeeper would have ready bagged 1/8 and 1/4s under the counter so we couldn't pilfer whilst he was up a ladder with his back to us. Theiving little gits we were.

Pick 'n' mix - the new penny mixes

UGC cinemas (UCG? y'know the one at centertainment) have the best pick 'n' mix of all the cinemas - they even have those fried egg sweets that you used to get in penny mixes.
the odeons has a **** poor selection that looks like its been sat there a decade and the showroom is all about huge bags of minstrels or winegums. i like a bit of variety so thats no good to me.

i've not been into woolies for a while - they always had a well stocked up selection and had giant cola bottles first.

WintersMist
04-10-2003, 14:30
yeah i have been to UGC and sampled their mixes. they are tasty, but they are not 1p each lol

tinajones

WintersMist

no, just a coincidence cos these three threads are at the top of the list.

very spooky things tho:
1. i used that quote from c4's queer as folk in my final show when i did fine art at psalter lane. - my final piece was on unrequited love, posession and comedy.
2. i went to high storrs too - i was in smith.

A date huh. I remember those from times of yesteryear. You dont date when you've been a relationship for ages. You kinda just go out for a meal and stuff... not like dating when it's all new.

Good luck with that young lady.

You gonna give us the lowdown on how it went afterwards?

tinajones
04-10-2003, 15:09
i know its so exciting.

shall i do a review?! - and apply the set questions!

DaBouncer
04-10-2003, 15:12
LOL that would be funny!

Setup a First Date thread (a bit like Geoff's interviews) and we can ll post a question to ask him from us.

That way we can vet him for ya. You can post his answers after the date. With a full review. That should scare the heck outta him!

think i will manage to scare him by just being me!

The thing with penny mixes was the cola bottles...

you would either get the *fabulous* ones which had sugar on the outside and were quite sour and made you pull funny faces

OR

you would get the rubbish ones that were just gummie sweets and really boring.

Aaaaahhhh...

Woolworths and Wilkos have pick n mix type things. May have to pay them a visit!

tinajones
04-10-2003, 15:53
i prefer the plain cola bottles - does that mean i'm boring?! ha ha.

wilkinsons is good innit. weigh your own with the automated price and all.

security call, code 500, zone A. everytime.
i wonder if thats for testing out the picknmix?

Most of the GT newsagent shops still do them and the little corner shops, most of the newsagents on the 'valley ' used to do them the newfield green paper shop used to do them and the one near herdings park do as well but most make up 10p mixes with or without bubblies and have them ready for the kids.

My message to the public of sheffield and surrounding areas is 'SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHOPS BUY THEIR MIXES AND MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH' i think we all need a pink shrimp or a sour cola bottle once in a while. lol  :P  :P  :P

Regarding the mixes does anyone remember TABS? I have asked around and not many people know what they were. I wonder if there still in production somewhere.

Classic Rock
06-10-2003, 15:33
I remember being 6 years old and having a half pence piece and going into the shop next to the school and getting three little chews for it.

I remember TABS, mini packets of little square sweets that didn't really taste of anything.

Belle
06-10-2003, 16:07
Thinking about the chews in particular....I think you got four for a penny once upon a time, or am I only dreaming?

Two flavours, one was called Fruit Salad (I think) and then there was a black one in a black and white wrapper, cant think of the name of that.

Then you got a pink bubble gum in a wrap too

and lovely jelly snakes

I am laughing as I reminisce ...you would stand there with your nose against the glass, eyes like saucers and play like Carol on Countdown with the shopkeeper

"Pleath can I have one of them and one of them and two of them pleath. One off the top row and four off the bottom row pleath."

and when they were in a hurry they wouldnt let you pick, they would say "10 pence worth?" and you would nod and they would chuck stuff in fast and it was never right because you had to have an aniseed ball between every other sweet so you needed a precise number...

Okay I am getting a life, I promise, okay going off to find one right now, dont shout at me....

Seems like Gleadless is well represented on here, including me :)

The fruit and veg shop on the Gaunt hasn't changed in years - mind you Micks hasn't much either - you'd have thought he'd have painted it or something by now...

How long you been in the Valley?

Not only good for the mixes but a damn fine place for a pub crawl was the valley, we used to start off in the wyvern on to the far lees, up to the cutlers, on to yates's, new inn, nailmakers, down to the gaunt, carry on down to the horse and groom up to the blackstock, on to the gleadless valley wmc and back to the wyvern for last orders.
It was a good saturday night out.

I think I left in '94 - was only there 2 years as they closed it and I left a year before it closed as going to Newfield wasn't exactly an option :o

Ended up being at Meadowhead for last 3 years - not a patch on Valley :)
