I've been searching round on t'internet to figure out if a Velux window fitting in my attic would need to meet with building regs and thus would need to be inspected. I'm guessing it wouldn't but It'd be good if someone could clarify the situation.
I've tried looking on the Sheffield council website but it isn't working (good old Sheffield council!).
Nothing on the Velux site either, then?
Not really, it says you don't need planning permission and mentions building regs in connection with a loft convertion, but I don't want a loft convertion, just putting a window in for extra light and ventilation.
How old is your house? Most new properties have clauses in their paperwork preventing the 'letting of windows' (or something  ) older houses don't suffer this indignity ;)
I would ask for it anyway.
It only takes some snooty so-and-so to say you can look directly in to their house from your loft, and all hell could break loose.
velux windows do not need planning permission re: our house.
basically because they are installed to lie flat with the roof and are therefore not visible in most cases.as long as they dont project from the rof you are ok.the rear of the property in this case has less restrictions than the front i.e nobody can do anything about the rear.

You won't need planning permission but it does need Building Regs approval as it's a structural alteration.
Thanks for the info everyone. The house is a 30's semi and quite a few houses on the road have them so I'm sure there's no problem with being allowed them.
I was considering doing the job myself but if it involves getting inspectors and stuff it's probably easier to get a builder who will sort all that side of things out as well.
