View Full Version : Which dog food do you buy?
i am wanting to know if anyone uses autarky dog food, if so do you recommend it? I have a dogue de bordeaux, old englishsheepdog and a sharpei and atiny elderly yorkie to feed. I am wanting to change and wondered if anyone has any views on arden grange, burns and james well beloved.:)
lyndsayx 19-05-2008, 14:48 we feed ours on james wellbeloved, which was highly recomended by the breeder and our vet. plus she seems to like it and is doing well so far :)
I use JWB and am very happy with it but I sell a lot of Arden Grange which (at the moment) seems to be what a lot of people previously on Burns are changing too. It has some of the same features such as no added colous/flavours/preservatives and contains none of the 4 main allergens (beef, soya, dairy, wheatgluten) or fillers. It's also not tested on animals but it is quite a bit cheaper than alternatives of the same bracket. I haven't used Burns but a lot still do, it was developped by a vet and is recognised as a quality diet.
I do have 1 customer on Autarky and I think the idea that it means 'exact requirement' is quite cute but its certainly not of the same type as the other foods. It's main ingredient is maize rather that meat and it is formulated for working dogs. It definitely is a lot cheaper , that's not disputed! I've got to say though, I love the way their 3 types are 'spring of life', 'summer of life' and 'autumn' of life rather than puppy, adult and senior.
If you do want to try Burns, JWB or Arden Grange, do get in touch and I can sort you with some samples to try before committing yourself :)

These are good makes and i always try to find ones with no E's in. One of our daily dogwalkers Millie had been on a well known brand from a super market , its made her wappy for a few weeks nows she's back on her own food she is better behaved.
Burns (have started getting mine from Helly- v reasonably priced too) and have used James Wellbeloved and Arden Grange. my standbys if we run out of the Burns. Ailsa doesnt make as much mess when she poohs, when she's fed Burns - she has it with Nature Diet or Nature's Menu -won't eat dried food on its own
squeakyclean 19-05-2008, 15:32 We give ours James Wellbeloved too. They had the bigs sacki in Jollye's for £29.99.
*Peaches* 19-05-2008, 19:45 Bakers, anything else and my two go really skinny
Bakers is full of calories we use that for Mojo as she is skinny although the vet tells me it's not awfuly good for her!! or any dog for that matter and it does have a few e's in it
*Peaches* 19-05-2008, 19:52 I tried them on various other things, and they got so thin you'd think i'd starved them for a fortnight
Have you had their thyrods tested? Mojo loses weight so easily and looks like i have starved her!!! she eats more than Badger!!!
*Peaches* 19-05-2008, 20:12 No I haven't. They're fine on Bakers, its just if I change
poshgirl 19-05-2008, 21:54 we use royal canin our stanley is a right old fuss pot but he likes this so we stick with it :D
SpeedDemon 19-05-2008, 22:20 My GSD is on burns - he's not too keen on the chicken flavour, but he loves the fishy one :)
DiamondGirl 19-05-2008, 23:23 we use Burns
I've tried all sorts with mine and the one that suits them best is James Wellbeloved (fish!) we did use Chappie for a short time as this fills Takara up and is low in fat (she piled some weight on after her spay) but their poos were terrible and our temporary lodger was sick!
We went back to James Wellbeloved which is great for their coat and just put some pasta with it to fill madam up although she seems less hungry now anyway but that could be the warm weather.
Molly has turned her nose up to virtually every food out there (oh- the money spent on buying bags of food!) so is now on a mix of 50% Wellbeloved dry and 50% Makro own brand. She loves the Makro stuff (which is dirt cheap) and now eats more of the Wellbeloved than she did when she was just eating it by itself, so that's a win/win as far as I'm concerned.
She has a dollop of meaty food or some fresh meat stock on it.
We feed Parka Nutro and the pup Beta, but will most likely move Parka over to the Beta as hes appears to have gone off the Nutro stuff and seems to like the Beta stuff.
We dont want to have to end up feeding them different food.
Forgot to add- our Havana Oriental cat Aero thinks she's a dog and will often help herself to Ailsa's food - loves chomping the biscuits, particularly Burns and has a thing about dog treats rather than cat treats- but then she is wierd -raised with 10GSDs and a Great Dane and thinks she is a tiny dog.
JarvisCocker 20-05-2008, 15:29 James Wellbeloved for Evie too. Seems to suit her so I'm sticking to that. She has the Turkey and Rice flavor.

10 GSDs and a GD? Good Lord, no wonder she thinks she's a dog. :hihi:It's the venison flavour Ailsa has isn't it? Does she like it because it's a strong flavour?
