Can anybody tell me what is the best program for web site design....at the mo I use Frontpage 2003 but everyone always tells me that it's a load of lo' rubbish....

But instead of telling where I'm going wrong, can someone tell me where I can go right...be ideal if there is a free download of it as well....

Cheers guys

I would have thought you would be better off with dreamweaver. It's not perfect but it is much better than frontpage. Unfortunately it's quite expensive.

I use Dreamweaver, but I find Frontpage is also good, I think people hate it cause it is by Microsoft.

In all honesty the best web design program is a text editor and several flavours of browser to work on. HTML isn't htat complex a language and there are plenty of good learning resources out there, maybe backed up with a good desktop reference, like O'Reillys web design in a nutshell (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596001967/qid=1112543206/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_18_1/202-4452965-9315058).

Just use mambo or xoops (both free) then you dont have to mess around with the likes of frontpage/dreamweaver.

I'm selling a Celeron 1Ghz machine shortly if you're interested - base unit only.

Use notepad. Doesnt get much more free and easily available than that, it comes with every version of windows.

There's even a free program similar to Notepad designed specifically for HTML as it colour codes the functions like Dreamweaver does.

It could be Notepad++:

http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

but I'm pretty sure it was something else.

There's also HTML Kit (http://www.chami.com/html-kit/), which has lots of plug ins and stuff to make life a little easier for HTML editing etc.

<edit>
How could I forget, Mozilla Composer (http://www.thesitewizard.com/reviews/mozillacomposer.shtml):loopy:</edit>

I would try NetObjects Fusion - it's probably the simplest web design package on the planet. You don't need to know or understand HTML, Java, ActiveX, or Media Plug-ins etc. You just pick from simple templates! All you do is type in you text and input your pictures. Looks real good and you can have a website up and running in minutes literally. :D

Yeah to be honest I have absolutely no problem with HTML, if you'd asked me 2 weeks ago I would have run a mile, but now feel pretty confident...never thought of Notepad actually, good idea that..:D

Dreamweaver works ok on my old PII 400. It's worth having Dreamweaver or similar even if you just use it to get a rough layout when you first start a site then go on to edit it in notepad.

I use HTML-Kit. I'd avoid Notepad as it doesn't highlight syntax.

I started with notepad, but as Skatiechik points out it doesn't highlight syntax or meta tags.
From then I used Web Expert 3.

Problem with Frontpage is if you use the 'drawing' view as I call it, well Frontpage will sha* up the code behind it and it'll no doubt contain loads of errors :(

dreamweavers the best and foolproof.......well i use it :)

if you can code raw html use notepad....free, works on all computers and all computers have it.......even none windows ones have a form of it.

try an online website creater? try http://moonfruit.com/

i also have a developors pad - ive not actually used it, supposed to be a bit like notepad but has extra features to help with creating websites and is free, but again you need to know how to code html

html is not the hardest language to learn mind, even i know bits - how to change fonts, colours, add a pic, make frames smaller/bigger :P
