View Full Version : I think Hallam FM is rubbish!
I listen to local (commercial) radio all over the UK; however I can not bear to listen to the dross that is Hallam FM.
If anybody from Hallam FM is on here please listen to stations such as Horizon (MK) for inspiration!!!
The main bug bears are as follows
1) Presenters thinking people only tune in for them - please shut up and play music.
2) Presenters who constantly talk about getting *****ed - see point 1 for resolution
3) Dull Breakfast show, with crap comedy sketches including a talking hamster! (This is total crap)
I suggest you change quick, before you listener ratings are 0 ZERO
Unregistered 18-05-2008, 10:57 Radio Sheffield is good to jump in and out of.
stevierob86 18-05-2008, 11:02 Radio 1 all the way, well for breakfast and drive home. In betweens crap but Moyles n Mills are the greatest!
I don't listen to hallam fm so not sure about point 3 but your 100% right on point 1 (galaxy do the same) and I have noticed point 2 on there too which I found a bit unprofessional. I usually jump between galaxy and radio 1 but tend to find galaxys presenters more annoying they obviously (fakely) play up to the being local thing - seems to be the only thing they have.
Radio 1 all the way, well for breakfast and drive home. In betweens crap but Moyles n Mills are the greatest!
I don't think radio 1 is as good as I always remember it. I used to listen to it when moyles and comedy dave had a 3pm slot and remember them being a lot funnier then they are now.
spooferman 18-05-2008, 11:24 Yup I agree!!
The have the same play list all day every day!! And the same cycle of advertisements.
Big John is very annoying but that is topped with the dross how the talking hamster that needs killing off.
Then Real radio seems to be owned by the same parent company as that runs the same format
I used to listen to Hallam FM all the time about 10 years ago when I was at school, but I cant bear it now and agree with pretty much everything the OP said, I tend to listen to Rother FM now, they play a wider selection of music and their DJs arent all "me me me arent I great" they seem to be a lot more community spirited.
rother fm is very good...96.1 fm...good mix of old and new.:)
thingsonstix 18-05-2008, 13:13 hallam fm is sheffield wednesday fm......rubbish
04jessops 18-05-2008, 14:19 I suggest you change quick, before you listener ratings are 0 ZERO
But there are always going to be people who want to listen to that stuff - they seem to be doing well off it.
mattyuk1 18-05-2008, 14:24 School years is good at 9am on hallam fm. After that it's crap.
BBC Radio 2 all the way!
Edit: i agree rother fm is good aswell.
Lisa*Marie* 18-05-2008, 14:40 I have to agree , hallam fm has gone downhill over the past few years . Was a lot better back in the day when Darryl Denham was doing the breakfast show and used to send Paul Walker out doing silly stuff with the hidden microphone - some classic moments there . I used to have a cd with all these hidden microphone gags on but lost it :( ........ memories !!!
SugarPuff 18-05-2008, 15:03 I  Big John, Michelle and Hallamster! :D
richard.lamb 18-05-2008, 15:16 that stupid cow michelle is an awful attention seeker who sounds like shes constantly got love eggs in her:hihi:
bladesman123 18-05-2008, 15:18 wogan rules !!!
lawlessdan 18-05-2008, 16:25 Hallam FM used to have a right good show mid week at night with things like Tom binns, phoneboy, Late night lucio and nick margereson...now its poop!
On Hallam FM, who's the guy in the afternoon about 4pm always slagging people off as if he's perfect? He sounds like one of those boring people who never gets out and has no friends.. :gag:
that stupid cow michelle is an awful attention seeker who sounds like shes constantly got love eggs in her:hihi:
Is Michelle the one who sold her "Jeremy Kyle groped me... I didnt like it but didnt say anything at the time, in fact i actively encouraged it until i found out he was famous and could make a few bob from it" story to the News of the World?

Could be Kam Kelly, absolutely terrible, such an irritating voice as-well. How this station survives I'll never know.
I have not listened to Hallam FM for years , to be honest its lost it way and Real Radio is much better :D
Could be Kam Kelly, absolutely terrible, such an irritating voice as-well. How this station survives I'll never know.
That rings a bell :gag:
Bloody awful!
tonynmorris 18-05-2008, 22:38 Hallam FM is only aimed at youth these days, whereas in the old days of Radio Hallam we had: chat, jazz, sport, news, insuls and much more. Sadly most of the presenters are sadly dead, the contract was lost aand emap took over, creating the same sound of poor presenters chat and sound. I worked on Radio Hallam broadcast shoots and Moneymountain with quality presenters, BBC Radio Sheffield is now similiar to 'old' Radio Hallam and fantastic, although Toby Fosters boring sometimes.

How young?
tony_santos 18-05-2008, 23:02 They've just been bought out so there not under the old e-map banner anymore, there quite a closed ship at the moment so to be honest dont expect any changes to the rota soon!
I have to agree that there needs to be an element of change but everyone is (probably) so fearfull for there jobs that i guess that they're going to keep there noses clean.
WYorksDeano 18-05-2008, 23:19 Must admit, I've not listened to Hallam FM for years either, well not since I left Doncaster in 2003.
Had a quick listen to it tonight, and after half an hour I got bored. Where are the likes of Debbie Mac and go? Had a look at the schedules for during the week and even though local radio stations have to change with teh times, it has changed for the worse
Paul2412 18-05-2008, 23:25 I remember back in the good old days of Hallam FM when I ALWAYS used to listen to the Mark Meadowcroft phone in! He made that phone in, then they replaced him with Scottie McClue who started off really good but took it abit too far.
As far as any other time, I used to like it way back when when Chris Rogers did the evening show (he does things on sky news now!) but apart from that i've always thought it was dire in the day. The breakfast show used to be acceptable but after being spoilt by Chris Moyles I dont think i'll ever even think about listening to anything else now
mattyuk1 19-05-2008, 07:25 Must admit, I've not listened to Hallam FM for years either, well not since I left Doncaster in 2003.

Trax fm for you:D Rother fm's sister radio station.

I agree it is awful.
Eric_Collins 19-05-2008, 08:19 they seem to have a batch of 10-15 songs that they replay all day, well in between school years ( which i may add is cracking listen ).
I think from 9am till 4pm i listen to the new Madonna song about 6 times  along with girls aloud speak french
Annoni_mouse 19-05-2008, 09:35 I hate Hallam FM in general, but most of all, I cannot abide, loath, despise WITH A PASSION Big John. He is terrible, and is about as funny as syphilis.
It wouldn’t be so bad, but when Toby Foster is not on (he seems to be on holiday all the time these days), you're left with the option of either Hallam/Galaxy/Real Radio or Radio 1 - and they are all as bad as each other.
Why can’t the Radio stations just give us music in the morning? Why do we have to put up with the unfunny ramblings of morons, exposing us to their indulgent, egotistical ‘humour’?
LitleMermaid 19-05-2008, 09:50 Hallam FM used to have a right good show mid week at night with things like Tom binns, phoneboy, Late night lucio and nick margereson...now its poop!
Ooooh Late Night Lucio!!! I never listen to Hallam any more, but I did love Lucio!
RazorSHarp 19-05-2008, 10:02 Who was the late night guy that got the sack for being 'contraversial' he was excellent (until they sacked him)
I must admit I listen to Hallam FM in the morning for 2 reasons, 1) so I can listen to the jam line then drive to work via the routes they give as blocked or gridlock as they are usually completelty clear. 2) because my car is old and knackerd and the only station that the radio picks up is 97.4 fm...
sacredearth 19-05-2008, 14:46 I don't listen to the radio much these days. Can't find a station I like since I left London
bootingmad 19-05-2008, 15:49 Hallam FM is utter commercial tripe, completely out of touch with current audio entertainment trends. Some one needs to tell them that school kids dont listen so stop trying to appeal to them.
Try Toby Foster for breakfast, very amusing then move onto radio 2 and back to Sheffield at 6 for footyheaven. The perfect radio day.

clublander 25-07-2008, 09:29 The huge inaccuracies in this thread are extremely funny. Especially as people post with an air of expertise - when clearly they haven't got a clue.
Oh by the way, Hallam's RAJAR results yesterday show it has more listeners, share and reach in quite a long while.
NEKRO138 25-07-2008, 09:33 I can't stand radio stations at all. They all seem to have these 'crazy' presenters and they drive me up the wall. Chris Moyles is the worst of the worst. 'Oh I got so drunk last night, I'm mad!' No you didn't, you sat in and ate a pie and then went to bed early because you have to be up at Oh Christ o'clock. And as for the music, I'd rather just have my mp3 player on shuffle cheers.
But yeah, Scotty McClue was hilarious!
troubledjoe 25-07-2008, 09:48 I used to go to the Ponds Forge gym, which is sponsored by Hallam FM. Hallam FM is the only station they play and after a while I grew to hate it that much that i actually cancelled my subscription and went to a more expensive gym. The presenters are vacuous idiots with no knowledge of music, they seem to have a play list of 10 songs which they CONSTANTLY rotate (when the presenters arn't talking about theirselves) and then theres that stupid sodding "Hallamster". I literally cannot stand to listen to Hallam FM.
puddinburner 25-07-2008, 10:26 Magic fm is slightly better but same radio station:suspect: Galaxy is okay if you like the old stuff.:)
Little Buzz 25-07-2008, 10:44 The only decent presenter Hallam ever had was James H Reeve, although it wasn't for long.
The current 'oh blimey, my picture is in the paper and on a tower, oooh I'm so embarrassed and had no idea" schtick with Michelle is cringe-worthy.
The playlist is dreadful - but then you can only play what the artists churn out - and in general the DJs talk too much about nothing of any consequence. And the adverts all seemed to have been made as GCSE media studies projects. Why is he buying his sister a car? Do those people really think they sound like Boycie and Marlene?
The papragraph above was written about what I once new as The New Hallam FM, but apart from the adverts it could apply equally to Radio 1. I can't believe anyone likes Chris "you won't believe how high an opinion I have of myself" Moyles and "Ironically referred to as comedy" Dave. Does it not make you want to curl up in a cave and sob until your lungs bleed to hear the utter, utter crashing banality of their utterances? And if the absolute lack of content doesn't get you, surely the cacophony of zoo noises does?
6 Music (or Radio 6 as I insist on calling it) was the way forward, until they got in George Lamb (the vain, vacuous, untalented version of Russell Brand, who himself set new lows only a few years ago). And if they could get their head around the fact that reading the news as if they are the Newsbeat team in Liz and Bruno's breakfast show in the early 90's it's be a lot better.
millsands 25-07-2008, 10:46 hallam is not that bad in a morning big john etc is a good show and school years after that not really worth listening to
alchresearch 25-07-2008, 10:50 The only decent presenter Hallam ever had was James H Reeve, although it wasn't for long.
I liked it when they joined up with Pennine and Viking in the evenings for the Yorkshire Radio Network back in 88-89. Tim Finlay was good, whenever I hear Kermit O'Dreary on Radio 2 on Saturday afternoons I'm reminded of him. James Watt did the late show (11pm+) and he was a hoot, playing records at the wrong speed and winding up the nutters who called in.

i agree with you there Tim Finlay was a good presenter. i used to have that on everynight as i was a chef in a hotel and made the evenings go by. i also liked a guy that was on hallam in the 80s called freddie j allen
alchresearch 25-07-2008, 11:01 Just found this:

I dont like Hallam at all, it was good about 5 years ago but Radio 1 is about the best of a bad bunch!

That's a bit before my time - in 88/89 I was listening to James H Reeve in Manchester doing much the same thing - he'd been off air at various times for political bias in elections, and for playing Killer Queen after that bloke shot a starting pistol at Trooping of the Colour. It was great to hear him again on Hallam in 1994/5. It was the winding up of the nutters I loved most - it was like an audio version of the forum :-)

Im guessing that was nick margerreson
bladesman123 25-07-2008, 14:19 both galaxy and hallam have gone right downhill in the past couple of years

indeed:hihi:
Little Buzz 25-07-2008, 15:39 There does seem to be a huge gap in the radio market.
Radio 2 sort of fills it with Chris Evans (much better than in the 90's when by his own admission he was an insufferable little sod) and Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie, but then they blow it with Friday Night is Music Night, anything with Mike Harding, Steve 'pension fund' Wright and Jeremy 'panic!, don't panic!' Vine.
Radio 6 sort of gets it right with Adam and Joe, Steven Merchant, Shaun Keaveny on a good day and Gideon Coe, but spoils it with the colour-coded, saccharine coasted, dumbed-down-to-insect-level news.
We need a radio 2/6ths that combines the best of both.
spooferman 25-07-2008, 15:57 just emailed the thread to Kam Kelly
Little Buzz 25-07-2008, 16:05 just emailed the thread to Kam Kelly
Is there anyone on the forum who can bear to listen and find out if he mentions it?
spooferman 25-07-2008, 17:08 i am, its pain full,:gag: but he replied.:hihi: but i sent the wrong thread. :loopy: just sent the right one:hihi:
Little Buzz 25-07-2008, 17:10 Oops! Keep us posted!
Toby Fosters boring sometimes.
You should hear what the wife says.
Hallam FM is unlistenable, but then I think that about all commercial radio stations because the adverts drive me insane.
Toby Foster is great on Radio Sheffield, but he seems to be off whenever I tune in these days. 6 Music is about the best station at the moment, but even that's mostly awful... maybe I'm just getting old!!
spooferman 25-07-2008, 18:01 Think he give a very Politically correct reply... Very loyal to the business
mollygeorge 25-07-2008, 20:04 Why do they have to repeat the same school years, it's 1995 or 1986 or 1981 or 2001 every other week and the same records. I love / did love Living Joy - Dreamer but it gets played more now than when it was released. How many times a day do they play Jordin Sparks (does she!!!!!!!).
Its like groundhog day with Hallam fm
HandsworthX 25-07-2008, 21:28 I agree with the others on here, when Tim Finlay and Paul Massey were on Hallam in the late 80's Hallam was good. It went down hill untill Emma Scott was on with Dayrl Denham on breakfast.
Now its not worth listening to
Steve White, Toby Foster, Gareth Evans and Howard Pressman, are the best on Radio Sheffield. Not forgetting the Sport!
goldenfleece 25-07-2008, 21:49 Hallam lost it about 1984.........all the best DJ's are now dead
RiffRaff 25-07-2008, 22:25 Can it be any worse than Peak FM?
That IS dire...
spooferman 26-07-2008, 01:31 tune in moday 6am,, 97.4
Little Buzz 26-07-2008, 08:55 I love / did love Living Joy - Dreamer but it gets played more now than when it was released. Its like groundhog day with Hallam fm
It was just on now, in case you missed it.
(Hallam is about the only thing on FM you can get on out bathroom radio, which is really for radio 5, but it's out of season. Lady Buzz is in the bath and I can hear it from here, I'm not a Hallam listener, honest!)
Radio 1 all the way, well for breakfast and drive home. In betweens crap but Moyles n Mills are the greatest!
YES too right Moyles is the best i must take about two or more hours of his show a day allways on form thats y ithink other stations or crap no so CRAP but i must say TOBY FOSTERS good talkin about radio one not keen on the female jocks apart from Sara Coxs whos off at the mo VERNS good Mills not bad Dick and Dom good and Chafas and Dave good all so
kittenta 26-07-2008, 10:18 I know at least one of them at Hallam FM knows about the forum as i've emailed them a thread similar to this one before.
I gave up listening to the radio. Too many repeat songs and adverts.
Michael_N 26-07-2008, 11:46 Rother Fm on 96.1 or Galaxy Yorkshire on 105.1 for me.
Nothing has changed. I contacted them about 10 YEARS ago to warn them they were playing 'You Get What You Give' by the New Radicals too much. Turn the station on by chance the other day, and what song is playing....!!!
Mr Bates 26-07-2008, 13:29 Bring back Umberto I say!
Bring Back Nick Margerison Nick at Nights at least that was interesting.

I drive home from work ( half an hour ) and you get 2 songs, rest is adverts. I don't listen to hallam anymore, if I want a conservatory I'll look on the net. and whats with the crap DJ's ?? they love there own voice too much,
Craig.
Hallam FM used to have a right good show mid week at night with things like Tom binns, phoneboy, Late night lucio and nick margereson...now its poop!
Those late night shows were amazing. They need to bring back quality late night phone ins. On Nick show they did used to have some pretty good debates yet they still had fun and jokes along the way.
Bring Back Nick Margerison Nick at Nights at least that was interesting.
Apparently he presents the late night show on Kerrang which according to wikipedia and the kerrang website seems to run in the same format as nick at night on hallam! Ill be listening tonight!

Keith Rich 01-08-2008, 10:18 As a heavy rock fan, I listen to Planet rock and Arrow Rock on digetal radio.
The great thing is that the emphasis is on the music, with presenters very much taking a back seat.

Radio Hallam is now a very different beast to the days when you had to be a alcholic to be a presenter.
Do you know how this change happened. Did they change all at once or was it gradually?

tonynmorris 01-10-2008, 11:48 I think Radio Sheffield ifantastic and always up to date. Yes Toby Foster gets on my nerves sometimes and Steve White, but where is Phil Butler. Paulette is natural and so funny and down to earth, Rony Robinson is topical, open and interesting. If Tony Capstick was still alive I would still listen to him as he was funny.
geek_andy 01-10-2008, 15:32 Local commercial radio's rubbish? I never would've guessed.
Listen to Russell Brand on Radio 2, or seek out Ricky Gervais & Steve Merchant's old XFM shows from 2001-2005.
Genuine laugh-out-loud radio at its finest.
Little Buzz 01-10-2008, 15:49 Russell Brand is just self congratulatory noise - I can't stand the giggling.
Steve Merchant is now on Radio 6 isn't he?

Phil Butler moved to 8 on Fridays which is annoying cos I'm out then so I can't get the Forgotten 45 right like I always do (except once)...

Could not agree more
grant and lochlin used to be the best on the morning show in the 90's. Does anyone remember the totally rigged gameshow? Personally though, I think hallam on a morning is brill!
in the days of roger moffet and kelly temple radio hallam (as it was known then) was the DB's:cool:
Used to listen to Radio Hallam when these 2 were on there (|Keith Skues as well) But mainly listened to Radion 1 in the 70/80's.
Can't stand commercial radio (although I loved the one advert that Hallam used to run for double glazing which was the three piggies song :D).
I listen to Radio 2 - Wogan is soothing to wake up in the morning and am looking forward to Chris Evans taking over in December.
haddockman 18-09-2009, 12:19 That screeching thing in the morning drives me mad if I happen to have left the radio on Hallam in an evening!
boutiquechoc 24-09-2009, 14:53 It's all about radio 1 and Chris Moyales for my drive to work....
I have my own office but can hear the radio (tuned into Hallam FM) coming from the main office, it's only on low but enough so I can hear the music. I don't hear the talking though. So I hear allsorts of old songs, really old as well some I haven't heard since I was growing up (pre 12 years old), occasionally i'll hear one that takes me back and makes me smile. However, there is a lot of cack played like Girls Aloud, Rianna type pop stuff and I'd like to hear more varied up to date music if not (as this generally is an older persons radio st, so why the Rianna and crap chart rnb songs?? I imagine 'young un's' would put galaxy or bbc on).
I have no say in the office radio, which doesn't bother me as I have better things to do, but as it is on..... Hallam if your listening: pls put on some good older stuff more than todays commercial 'pop' chart poop: Not heard any: Guns and roses, Metallica and Def Leopard, Madonna type 90's songs as of yet.
Oooh 'when you were young' has just come on....:hihi:
