View Full Version : Evening Walk Thursday 22nd May
The next evening walk is a linear one and will take place next Thursday 22nd May, starting from the Supertram terminus at Malin Bridge at 6.15 p.m. and will go up the Loxley Valley to Bradfield.
The length of the walk is about 5 miles, and the route is fairly flat, apart from one short, steep hill about 1/2 the way along. If anybody needs an incentive to get up the hill, we will be stopping at the Nags Head pub situated at the top of the hill for a much needed refreshment break, before we carry on to Bradfield.
We will then catch either the 8.30 no 61 bus back to the starting point, or stay in Plough Inn at Bradfield, and catch the 10.00 bus back.
neoteric 17-05-2008, 15:51 I will be coming on this walk, looks like some interesting - ahem - public buildings. May provide some ammo for the Photography group May Photo Competetion.
I will try to come on this walk if i get away from work early enough!
Godzilla 19-05-2008, 21:39 I'm wondering if my ankle will be up to this? The bus time back would be ideal as I would be in time to join Mr Godzilla for an Indian on Bradfield Road. Will just see how I go on over the next couple of days. The acupuncture sessions seemed to have helped. Hope to see you all soon.
Godzilla 21-05-2008, 10:16 What time do you anticipate getting to the Nags Head? I'm thnking I could meet you all there and do the remaining bit of the walk.

Would think about 7.30, but if we're running late, for people to catch the bus back from Bradfield we may not call in the Nags Head at all. Maybe Taxman will txt you as we're going along?
Godzilla 21-05-2008, 23:03 Well, if you're not going to sojourn (spelling?) at the Nags Head, then I might just veg at home and let Mr Godzilla eat with his friend and get a taxi.
Just to go over what we're planning to do tonight.
If we set off on time at 6.15, I would imagine without a proper stop it would take us approx 1 1/2 hours to get to Bradfield. This will mean that to catch the 8.30 bus back, we will have 45 minutes to spare to have a drink at either the Nags Head, or the Plough in Bradfield. Some people of course might decide to stay at Bradfield and catch the 10.00 bus back.
If we are running a bit late, and it looks like we might be cutting it a bit fine for the 8.30 bus if we stop at the Nags Head, then we'll give that pub a miss, and carry on to Bradfield.
As always, what we do regarding stops, pace of the walk, and anything else that crops up will be decided en route.
It's a nice walk this one, I strolled it the other evening (although went round Dam Flask instead of to the pub).
Just beware of the vast quantities of dog poop you have to dodge as you join the Loxley Valley at the start of the trail. :gag: People should bloomin' well scoop!
Godzilla 22-05-2008, 15:54 Will give it a miss tonight as my ankle is still giving me a bit of bother. I'll try to get out on the next shortish walk.
LinchpinLulu 22-05-2008, 16:07 I have to work tonight so, sadly, won't be able to come.
Its not faaaiirrr. :(
Sorry that all you people who tried to get had to give this one a miss, cos it was the perfect evenings walk tonight. Only 2 hours in total including a pub stop, and ideal walking weather with it. Mind you, we hardly saw a soul walking the valley apart from the odd dog walker (see what you mean about dog muck Feargal :gag:) and the usual jogger or two. Still, it made a change from the multitudes that frequent the Porter Valley of an evening.
8 in total tonight who were Taxman, Hippiechick3, Neoteric, Logiebaird, Billysmum, Scoobz, Lady Vega, Princess Vega.
Nice big welcome tonight to first timers Hippiechick3, Lady Vega and Princess Vega. It was really nice to meet you all, and encouraging to know that you say you're going to come again soon too. :)
Did anybody else feel a bit moby dick when they'd got off the bus, after the ride from hell incidentally? Answers to Stagecoach please.
vincentvega 22-05-2008, 21:06 hi, lady vega & princess vega really enjoyed this evenings walk & company:D, wasn't keen on the bus ride home though, letter on its way to stagecoach:suspect:
neoteric 22-05-2008, 21:52 A nice evening stroll but somehow these short easy after work strolls seem to tire me out more than the longer Sunday walks. I was really in need of some rest and refreshment by the time we reached the Nags Head.
Nice to meet our new walkers and the man who invented the telly.
Now just packing my rucksack for a couple of days in the Yorkshire Dales - but will be back for the Edale walk on Sunday.
Just a few pictures here (http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/BradfieldEveningWalkThursday22ndMay) - for some strange reason everytime I walk past an Angler they seem to catch a fish.
The bus ride back was quite an experience, imagine coming home on that after a skinful :gag:
A good walk and an even better bus journey back..you'd pay a lot more than £1.20 for such a ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Nice to meet three new people (you'll have to excuse me, I'm a bit shy and introverted in real life)
I'll post my photos some time tomorrow morning during my day off :hihi:
LinchpinLulu 23-05-2008, 06:19 I bet you had a lovely walk last night-perfect weather and beautiful surroundings.
I remember the last time I did this walk with the group, which I think was my first outing with the Forum, the bus ride back was horrendous! I haven't been near a bus since :hihi:
Here (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/saulmcintyre/LoxleyEveningWalk)are the my photos from this walk :)
Although I would have said that the light wasn't good enough to take decent photos last night (what do I know  ) I've got to say that there are some superb shots from Taxman and Neo. There is so much atmosphere in there. Well done fellas :)
Ok, I HAVE to ask.....
Just what DID happen on the bus journey back??!!!!!! :hihi: :hihi:
Nothing actually "happened" apart from the bus driver tearing round the lanes between Bradfield and Stannington as if his backside was on fire! It was one of them tiny buses that you see all over the place now, and he was chucking it round the bends like there was no tomorrow. He also drove through Stannington far faster than was safe. We were all glad to get off, with a number of us feel quite travel sick.
Wonder if his previous job was at Alton Towers?
You could pay a fortune for that kind of ride in Barry Island!!!!!!
