Is there anything I can do to better my chances of getting the domain I want?

Placing a back-order request does not guarantee that the domain names will be registered to you at any time. If they become available, we will endeavour to register them on your behalf, but it is possible that the domain name(s) will never become available.

Once you have submittted your requests, the domain names will be placed into the back-order system and monitored continuously. If one or more of them becomes available at any time, registration will be immediately attempted. While there is a good chance of us securing the name(s) in this event, it is possible that another party may be attempting to register the same domain name(s).

If we are successful in registering a domain name on your behalf, you will receive an email from our registrar, Melbourne IT, offering the domain name to you. Should you choose to accept the name, you will make payment directly to the registrar, who will assign the domain name to our management. Full instructions will be included in the domain name offer email.

If we are unsuccessful in obtaining a domain name, we will continue to monitor it and, should it become available in future, will try again to register it.

In short, no.

You can place a backorder, as that text says. If/when the domain becomes available because the current owner doesn't renew it, the company you have the back order with should buy it on your behalf.

If you want it badly enough you could try getting in touch with current owner and see if they would sell it to you.
