View Full Version : Can dogs have OCD?
I ask because Takara has this 'thing' about her blankets.
I pile them all neatly next to the bed or sometimes they're on the bed and Takara will come and take them, one by one into the garden.
It's usually just the black proplan ones that she takes out with her.
She takes one, leaves it on the drive, then goes and gets the second one and puts it with the first and so on and so on. Then she leaves it there to go and play in the garden.
I used to put them back straight away but she'd start a tug of war so I now put them back while she's not looking but as soon as she notices they're back inside, she goes and collects them and puts them back on the drive
Daft thing is, she doesn't do anything with them when they're outside - she just seems to think that's where they should be.
Any ideas?
The funniest photo I have was taken in the 90s of my gsd bitch Gina carrying her vet bed followed by eight puppies. She would supervise me whilst I cleaned the puppy crate and if I had not done it to her satisfaction would rearrange it before allowing her pups back in. What a wonderful mum she was.
pinkgirl 17-05-2008, 07:12 Yes I expect most dogs have their funny little habits just
like us humans, Leah has a few too, only one of her
toys (A yellow one) gets a special wine when she picks it
up, she doesn't do it with anything else just when she picks
that one up :hihi:

Molly has a very similar thing with her toys and bones. When cleaning they all get tidied into a pile (yesterday it was onto the hearth) and she's scared of the vacuum cleaner so she was sent upstairs whilst the cleaning was done, to prevent her from running round the room trashing things in her fear.
When she came back downstairs the first thing she did was to pick up her toys and bones one by one and arrange them around the edge of her bed, then she got on the bed and went to sleep. Every now and then she picks them all up in turn and rearranges them.
If that's OCD then I guess Molly's got it! I'm more inclined to think that it's just that she has a different idea on how her toys are meant to be than I do.
When we first got Amber, she used to go around the house collecting all her toys together, and placing them in a big heap in the living room. If any of the were "missing" she used to g on the rampage looking for it! It was always about 9pm every night:loopy:
She dosn`t do anymore, I think she was worried she wasn`t going to get them back(she had been in kennels)
But she has her favourite balls, and certain ones she won`t entertain(I think she`s just spoilt and picky though:roll:):D
SpeedDemon 17-05-2008, 11:10 Our loopy GSD goes into panic mode if we give him one of those rawhide bone things. Runs round the house with it in his mouth whining, looking for somewhere to hide it "just in case" any of us humans or worse still, the moggies, wanna pinch it. Like anyone would want it when it's been in his mouth :gag: He'll whine at the back door, then if we let him out, he'll try to bury it under the hedge. Usually digs a huge hole, then tries to push soil back over it with his nose. Usually just ends up with a dirty muddy nose and we can all still see the bone, but he thinks he's done a great job and is then happy :hihi:

Thats dog logic!!!:hihi:
I can'tt throw Ailsa's 'kittens' away until I buy her a new one- she seems to know how many she's got (manky things they are too). Once the meow has died, I sneak them out anyway. She also has a thing about corners- she won't retreive a toy or treat if it lands in a corner. Oh and she rearranges the bed too - I put the dustsheets on it and she kicks them all off and gets comfy in a nice nest in the centre...Silly tart
lyndsayx 17-05-2008, 12:27 we often come into the kitchen when charlies run off to play, and find that she has piled up all her toys on her bed. oh, and she burrys her teething bone under the padding too.
and she will quite happily jump from the floor onto the sofa, but won't jump off.. and we have our sofas in an L shape, she will run from one to the other but won't go back. crazy thing :hihi:
hehe  Aren't they funny.
Thanks guys - enjoyed reading those!
sharonxxxx 17-05-2008, 14:29 my dog charlie is a bichn friese she still does this now and shes done it nearly evey night at around 9pmish
she starts to go bonkers running round the house and chasing her tail in circles for about 10 mins its hilariouse its wierd cus its always around the same time ,then i read in a book about bichons that they are known for doing it its strange ,
also when news at ten finishes she knows thats when i go to bed so she stands on the stairs and barks till i come up bless her ......... and shes got a fettish for soapy water when your in the bath she goes mental to lick soap off your arms has anyone else got a bichon friese ???? was wondering if it was just mine whats mental or if they all are xx lol
Hehe, Sharon it sounds like my dalmatian only you can imagine she causes more destruction due to her size!
Both of mine know that bed time for them is about half 9 and if I don't actually put them to bed they go in the kitchen to their beds and whine!
Takara also loves to 'dry' me by licking if my arms or legs are wet, soap or no soap!
sharonxxxx 17-05-2008, 16:51 awww bless mine sits and begs till i let her do it and she dances too x
Toby (new cavvie) is a complete nutcase and apart from being extremely cute and mad for a bit of fuss his favourite pastime seems to be chasing. He'll either sniff and then chase our other dog or if t'other cavvie manages to find a safe spot (top of the sofa where Toby can't reach yet) Toby will chase his tail for a good half an hour until he gets tired, have a 5 minute cuddle with one of us, then another half an hour of tail chasing, 5 minute cuddle etc. Last night he did it all the way through Secret Millionaire and then all the way through Big Brother. He's crackers! :hihi:
where shall I start?
in our house there's something called 'beagle rules' - which is really a joke about OCDness in a dog who's not actually allowed to make rules ;)
the biggest one has to be that if we forget to put chewstick in it's box before we go to bed, he'll suddenly realise, look panic stricken, and have to go back downstairs to sort it out
then there's the wheatbag elephant he got for christmas:
'ew, that stinks!'
'Oi! You're putting it in my bed!!!!'
'..but it stinks!!!'
'oh, it's warm is it??'
Now he carries it upstairs (by the trunk coz it's cooler), string legs swinging away, and waits for me to peel back his pillow, drops it in his basket, then gives it a friendly 'tucking in' nudge before jumping in for a snuggle
dogs
