Does anyone else agree in that the city centre - The Moor, Fargate etc is a complete dump? There is no logical layout to the stores - I mean why put Oasis hidden down Chapel Walk and some tacky outlet for Miss Sixty smack bang in the centre???

It's ridiculous having to go all the way to Meadowhall for shops like West One, River Island and H&M. As the government seems so keen on digging up all the roads that quite frankly should be left alone why don't they put taxpayers money into fixing up the shops ?

It's about time something was done!

Ummm.....

As a tax payer, why the heck SHOULD my money go in to fixing up shops that I don't use, so that their owners can make profits? Isn't that what capitalism is all about?

Whilst agreeing that the centre of the city could do with improvements, whether you necessarily improve a place by providing a few more cathedrals to capitalism is debatable.... :)

Has it not occurred to you that Oasis chose for themselves to locate "hidden down Chapel Walk" and that Miss Sixty chose to put their shop "smack bang in the centre"?

Has it not occurred to you that West One, River Island and H&M have not only chosen to have their retail outlets in Meadowhall, but have also decided that they do NOT want to have outlets in the city centre?

If you really think that it's about time something should be done - simply go and ask the shop managers concerned if they would like to follow your advice and relocate in accordance with your preferences. Oh, and don't forget to post us on what they said to you. Looking forward to your update on how you got on.

No, I disagree

Its not ridiculous if you live in Tinsley, Darnall or Wincobank! As somebody else has posted, why should our well earned pounds go towards subsidising capitalism and fat cat shareholders. We already make these companies rich by buying their goods, we dont need to offer them subsidised space as well.

Plenty of things are being done, just not all of them physically visible yet. Just look at the train station, Peace Gardens, Barkers Pool, City Hall, Leopold Square and so on, you cant say theres nothing going on...

H&M are moving into the empty units at the top of fargate sometime next year.

I also agree that something should be done in the City Centre.
When you walk at the bottom of the Moor , it is full of cheap pounds shops, which of course have their use and provide a necessary role .I use these sometimes.
However, I think the town planners have to look at what we want from the City centre.
The trouble with Sheffield is that you have to walk miles to get what you want as everything is scattered around.
If you want trendy expensive shops, you go up near Devonshire Green and shops around there.
If you want cheap , you go down the Moor.
If you want High Street decent shops, you have to suffer Meadowhell.
I love to be outside in the fresh air and absolutely hate the overbearing claustrophobic atmosphere of Meadowhall so I avoid it at all costs.
What I want from the City Centre is to be able to walk leisurely fron shop to shop and be able to get all the things that I want without it having to take up a full day to get it all.
Not sure whos responsibility that it,but something needs to be done

No-one seems to have mentioned it, but as I understand it - over the next ten years, the entire centre is going to be knocked about a bit and completely redesigned .... there was fierce competition between several major developers to get the assignment. A couple of years ago there was a tent on Fargate where you could vote for the proposals.

One of the things I remember is that where the fire station is now is going to be John Lewis, already three big new buildings are being built alongside the Peace Gardens which will have shops on the ground floor ... I dont know where to find the details but I think either Sheffield One or the SCC websites should have them.

I don't quite understand the gist of the orginal post though. It's as though s/he is saying that "someone" ought to have a masterplan and demand that shops locate in certain places, like a Monopoly board or something. As redrobbo posted, companies themselves decide where they want to locate based on their available budgets, public image and where they imagine their customer base will be.

As for Meadowhall, I love it - I hate being out in the cold and rain, being accosted for my time or money every few yards by one person or another, people smoking and throwing litter everywhere. For me the only drawback is that it's the other side of the city and takes ages to get there.
