I think it will be interesting to see how we do next year without the premiership renewal offer on.

That will give us a truer picture i think.

I think the one thing that has surprised me along with these figures is that aparently Championship Football is the "4th Most Watched" league in Europe, behind The Premiership, The Bundesliga, and La Liga according to official Stats from the F.A. Which has shocked me considering The Championship beat Serie A, French Ligue 1, and the Dutch Eredivisie. It really speaks volumes for the support of football in this country, and in all honest apart from United, I guess it's nice to see packed Grounds up and down the country week in / week out!. It adds to the atmosphere of the game and helps to lift the players. If ony clubs could lower their extortionate ticket prices, then we might see constant full houses.

Well done Blades, where were you all two years ago when you were out-supported(again) by your lowly neighbours from S6..........anyone ? SHHHHHHH

Taking into account the fluff you have posted above and the fact that every post preceding RayOberstein has been factual and in no way derogatory don't you feel just a teensy, weensy bit of a hypocritical plank. :hihi:

And why would someone need to post the attendances ? The point is ?
FYTC you have missed the point......you plank !!

Blimey FYTC you came back, it's been a while but I've missed your interesting and witty posts, maybe your spending too much time reading peoples posting history...anyway do you know the answer to the question I posted about the last attendance at Bramall Lane over 35,000...I really would like to know ?
One of you Blades must know there has not been that many since the early seventies though I do recall one at t' Lane just over 45,000 in 1980...just the one though !

The fact is that whoever is the most successful will have the greater support. United are more successfull of late. No doubt when Wednesday turn the tables they will have the greater support. However, there is an exception, the promise of success. If a team looks like its going in the right direcion the fans will come back. For instance if the much bemoaned take over goes through at Hilsborough they would have had better attendances than United even if they had ben relegated.

Lets be honest they're both poor teams at the moment.

I'm not sure comparision betwen the two are fair, last season United had 19,000 season ticket sales based on the belief of Premiership football and (even worse in my opinion) for next season a Season ticket for myself and two boys would cost almost double for Wednesday than it would for United (and Doncaster for that matter).

History shows Wednesday have had more fans, but I'm afraid the balance has gone the other way and will continue to do so until Wednesday sort their pricing policy out.

That's agreed. It's a nonesense and bad business to have prices so high to watch a poor team.

the 45,000 was before capacities at all grounds were drastically reduced by introducing all-seater stadia, though.

However, the figures don't lie:- we got the biggest gates, consistently, all season...

Sigh....another attendance thread.

If Wednesday were doing as well as United, they would have higher attendances. They generally have a bigger fanbase, even though at the moment most of them stay at home because the team is poor.

Of course it's nice that we have higher giates these days, but I don't understand why some Blades have a complex about this. Remember, it's not so long ago when we were pulling home crowds of 14,000.

can you please explain how you can get 36,000 in a 32,000 capacity.
i've mentioned before we only let in 2,800 visitors. if we had room the likes of man utd, arsenal, newcastle, chelsea, liverpool it would take it to over 40,000
and if we let them all in for 10 and 5 quid a lot more.

bladebloke, you obviously have not noticed that attendances generally increased since Wednesday were in the Premiership, back in the early 90s.. that is a fact ! Had Wednesday been in the Premiership in the Last few years they would also have had better attendances than back then !

In response to your next post...well obviously you can't get 36,000 into a 32,000 capacity stadium but my original question was when did you last get over 35,000 at Bramall Lane...you should know !

"The gradual increase in average attendance figures of the Premiership from 22,180 in 1992-93, to 33,884 in 2007-08 has clearly pumped vast amounts into teams playing in the Premier League."

yep but ground capacity as increased since then. when man utd were improving their stadium capacity went down to 40,000. roker park's safety capacity went down to around 22,000 now they play in a 45,000 stadium. highbury 39,000 to 60,000. but that doesn't apply to you as you've always had a big stadium but only get crowds over 30,000 when theres 8,000 visitors at the other end.

For a team that spent 12 years in the second tier of English football, making the playoffs, getting to cup semi-finals and gaining promotion (albeit just for 1 season) is a sustained period of success. Our attendances reflect that.

In comparison Wednesday's attendance has suffered since their relegation from the Premier League and subsequent relegation battles.

But hey, don't take my word for it:

Sheffield Wednesday attendances (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C._seasons)

Sheffield United attendances (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_United_F.C._seasons)

In our promotion season we still drew a smaller crowd than Wednesday, who finished 19th.

The season we made the play-off final and domestic cup semis, we still had lower attendances than Wednesday, who were relegated.

So I don't really see the relevance in us having higher gates at the moment, because history shows us it probably wont last, and it doesn't really matter.

sorry mate but 1 season in premier and relegated at the end of it, losing in all play offs we've got to, losing in all semi's we,ve been in. is not my idea of sustained success. wendy on the other hand league cup win, european qualification, multi million pound signings but still cant average more than 30,000 a season including 10,000 man united fans not 2,800.

its difficult to judge attendances till next season. in utd promotion season it was never sold out, i think it was 25k roughly, fair enough, in your one season in prem you got a full stadium but how many of the people that got season tickets bought them because it was youre first season in the prem and maybe youre only for a while. then last season, most people renewed expecting promotion, maybe if you had struggled on in prem for 5-6 seasons you might of still filled the stadium but we will never know now. it will be interesting to see how many fans utd get this coming season, then it will be easier to judge

Last time we had over 35,000 at BDTBL? Yonks ago I would imagine, because the capacity of the ground was reduced to less than this when it became all seater some years ago.

Unlike Swillsboro' which it was charming to see just looks the same and holds the same as it did back in the 1970's.

I love this banter. The only thing the Wednesdayites can boast about is crowd figures. No matter that they averaged lower crowds than United all season. No matter that they only had 5,500 season ticket holders compared to United's 20,000. No matter that their ground is old and decrepid and needing more than a lick of paint, (although even a lick of paint would help). No matter that they are £25 Million or more in debt with a team that narrowly missed out on relegation to the old 3rd division again this season. They love to believe that they are the "big club" in Sheffield. Wrong!

Not in any one area are they bigger than United - unless we are talking about the word score on a Scrabble board perhaps?

yes, not for long though eh?

Last season, despite us gifting you 4 points which in the end ensured your survival, you were above United for approximately 2 hours out of the entire season.

Maybe you can make it a whole day this coming season?

I don't wish Wednesday anything bad by the way, it would be great if they and United ran away with the Championship next season and we got around to Derby matches in the Prem. But, I do wish those Wednesdayites would come to terms with the fact that they are Sheffield's number 2 club thesedays in every respect.

None of this is of any relevance though is it? I was 9 the last time Wednesday won a trophy, and you have to go back to 1935 to the last time you achieved anything.

But if you're going to start on about records and trophies, United have a better head-to-head record against Wednesday, and we've won the FA Cup more times than Wednesday (4 to your 3).

Can't you see how pointless all this is though? Most of your achievements were over 70 years ago, what use is that to you now given the position your club is in?

dont know how we've strayed on to this when the thread is titled united top attendance charts but hey ho.

first of all titanic. f a cup wins 4-3 to blades. most times in fa cup finals 6-6 so i suggest you do a bit of home work before posting.

most times clubs nearly gone bust wendy twice

most times a club as begged to stay alive. wendy again once soon to be twice.

most club hero's sacked at christmas. wendy once.

most players jailed for match fixing. wendy 3.

and just in case your too young to know

in 1964 the famous betting scandal which embroiled English football meant that three Owls players were suspended for betting on games which they had purposely lost. Peter Swan, Tony Kay and David Layne were all convicted of match-fixing, in a game against Ipswich Town, which Wednesday lost 2-0. All three served jail terms and were banned from the game for life, as fans of the game became disillusioned with English football.

thats why we'll always be sheffields number one club.

and just in case your too young to know

in 1964 the famous betting scandal which embroiled English football meant that three Owls players were suspended for betting on games which they had purposely lost.

Wednesday have never had a transvestite as chairman though:D

tit for tat, dumbing down, childish comments...think about it before your next reply...sunshine !

Now back on topic, like I said regards the attendances..and yes it's getting boring.....you are currently better supported..can't argue, however we all know the reasons and we all know the history..unless we are ignorant !
