2. Tom Waits
3. The Decemberists
4. Tori Amos
5. Radiohead

Funny how things work out. I've played over 38,000 tracks, and I like Tori Amos but no idea how she's that high!

I don't understand this site. I started a profile, went to add some songs and it only let me have 30 second clips. What's the point?

What's the point?

You can get plug ins for Itunes, WMP and other media players/devices which monitor what you listen to. A list of which artists/songs/albums you've listened to is then uploaded to your Last FM profile. This data is then used in various ingenious ways, for example you can listen to a custom generated radio station which plays music similar to the artists you listened to, the website will also generate a list of 50 people who's musical taste is most like yours and you can browse their profiles to see what other music they've been listening to.

Only some artists insist on the 30 second clip thing, most allow you to listen to the full track up to 4 times. The site isn't really designed for you to listen to full albums though, it's more likely that you would look up an artist and listen to music LIKE that artist. In effect it uses all sorts of little tricks to help you discover new music/artists.

You can also join various groups that you feel represent you (I believe there is even a Sheffield Forum group) and the music data for the group is pooled. So for example if you join the group "Sheffield", your data is pooled with all the other members of that group and at the end of any week you can see which artists, tracks, etc the people of Sheffield have been listening to.

For example; the top 5 artists in the aforementioned "Sheffield" group for the past week is currently:

1.Muse
2.R.E.M.
3.Radiohead
=4.Foo Fighters
=4.Nine Inch Nails

Once you've downloaded the Last FM client the whole process is automated. Everytime you plug in your Ipod (for example) the play count is read by the Last FM client and uploaded to your LastFM profile (and group profiles) and a new recommendation list is generated.

It's a brilliant idea that's unfortunately more difficult to describe than it is to use :)

It's a slow process at first by the way. It takes a couple of weeks listening (depending on how much music you listen too of course) to properly build a profile of your listening tastes. You'll probably also find that when you first start it's recommending lots of music to you that you already own, that's just because it doesn't know you own that music (yet) as it hasn't "seen" you listen to it. The longer you use it the better (and more diverse) the recommendations in my experience.

I don't get this thing either, it never picks up what I play.

Using what? Ipod, Itunes, WMP, etc?

I'm going to assume it's WMP because it has a nasty habit of disabling all the active plug-ins when it crashes even if the plug-in wasn't responsible for the crash. Assuming you've downloaded and installed the Last FM client (available from the link above) you can re-enable the plug-in within Windows Media Player by going to the tools menu, plug-ins and tick "Last FM"

Media player, it never worked with that. But also my boyfriend has arranged this new way of listening to music which I don't really understand - it comes out of an xbox - that's all I know :hihi: I don't think there's any hope of lastfm picking up that!

I'm guessing he's using Xbox Media Centre? In which case you're in luck because not only does it pick up which music you're listening to but you can also listen to the Last FM streams through your Xbox!
