Hello,

I am 25 weeks pregnant and have been feeling loads of movement for a while now. I'm worried at the moment though as I've not felt much for a day or 2. Yesterday I felt moving but not as much as usual and today even less. I feel the most when I'm laid down so when I finish work i'm not moving till I feel something! Do you think I should contact the midwife? I have felt a bit today, just not much. Might be really sleepy?! I'm scared to contact the midwife though as that will make me face up to the fact that something might be wrong.
Any advise?

Cheers

All my kids have gone through these "lazy times" when they've frightened the living daylights out of me for no apparent reason. One midwife told me that sometimes when they're having a growth spurt, they dont move as much for a coupla days. Dunno how true it is. I'm a great believer though, in contacting your midwife, even if just for advice if ANYTHING at all worries you. After all, thats what they're there for, and they should be able to put your mind at rest. I've been monitored at hospital for a couple of hours with 2 out of my 5 pregnancies, just because they decided to stop moving altogether and i was worried. Everything turned out to be fine. Hope that helps.

I went through a few quiet periods earlier on in my pregnancy, now he hardly sits still!

When I was pregnant with Rachel I ended up being monitored twice because she had gone quiet.

Like others have said though, call your midwife if you are concerned. Mine was fabulous and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid or paranoid.

Hope all is well. xx

best bit of advice MW gave me was - Drink a glass of ice cold water and lay down for half an hour with both hands on your bump, if you don't feel anything in that time, phone the hospital

I'm nearly 27 weeks and my little girl goes through definite phases where she'll be very active for a week or so and then have a day or two of 'rest' but if it really bothers you go and get checked out :)

What I normally do if she isn't remotely active at her normal times - my baby has a very distinct pattern now, with obvious sleep/wake cycles - is drink a glass of coke (not diet, or decaff, the sugar and the caffeine help lol) and lay down on my left side for an hour. She normally wakes up for a bit and then goes quiet again.

BUT - I only found this out today - I have anterior placenta so feeling movement is harder for me because of the placenta being in the way. It may be the same for you, the movements can be sparse and less powerful when the placentas at the front.

Good luck :)

They say that you should feel 10 movements in a day if you dont then id give them a call.

Mine goes quiet as well, most do.
One thing I found that helps me realise all is fine (and alternatively would act as a record for the hospital if I really did think something was wrong) was to keep a bit of paper by me all through the day and label it by the hour, e.g. 9-10am, 10-11am, and under each hour, make a mark every time I felt even a vague movement. It's amazing how much they do move and you don't pay it attention or forget...or how each of those movements adds up to quite a few in a day. You'll also get a feel for what times they tend to move the most and when they are quietest.

I found my fears seemed to be realised with 1 movement in the first hour, 1 or 2 in the next, then none at all etc for hours...but then after a while there would be a huge flurry of 10-20 movements in a five minute time period followed by a steady flow after that would put my mind at ease again. Having it written down in black and white really seems to help.

BUt as everyone has said, and as I always say: if you're really worried, speak to your midwife. They won't necessarily do the whole big monitoring in hospital thing but may invite you over to listen to the heartbeat, which I've had done a couple of times.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for your replies, they really helped. Anyway, I was going to phone the Midwife this morning if I didn't feel anything last night but he was wriggling like mad most of the night! So much so I was kept awake! He must have been saving it all up for last night! A bit of movement this morning at work, but I usually feel the most when I'm laying down. I think they just like to scare us!

thanks again
Zip.

I am pleased to hear that your little one has been moving, sorry to hear that you were kept awake though !! I am sure they do that to get us used to the sleepless nights to come !!

Take care and get plenty of rest.
