Not been in the Wig & Pen for a while now and my mate said he saw something about it in metro last week and it was expanding? Does anyone know what is happening there and when?

There have been a number of reports in the local press about it. An extension to the rear of the building will provide a bigger dining area overlooking Paradise Square. It should be fabulous when it's finished and with the good food that the 'Wig & Pen' is already known for it will be a real plus for the city centre.

I think they're closing on the 1st June and hoping to re-open two weeks later. In time for my birthday! I love that place - best bar/restaurant in Sheffield centre, followed closely by Platillos. The owners seem to have an eye for quality and know that others do too - and are willing to pay for it.

Sounds interesting - hope this means there will be more seating for the bar area. The only problem with the Wig & Pen is that its just slighlty too small.

we hired the wig and pen on a sunday after my son's christening at the cathedral. they we're absolutely fantastic and I thought it was a bargain too - we had soup followed by hot pork and stuffing sarni's. the whole lot (including drinks for 20 people) came to £250.

will definitely consider using them again for private hire - only down side is the place wasn't really buggy/pram friendly and there were no baby changing facilities.

The building work has been going on for a couple of months now, they are planning to open the extension for 20th June. The dining room will be accessible directly from Paradise Square & there will be seating outside on the square. There are some visuals up in the bar which give some idea, it looks great.

So it's still open while their doing the work then? I was thinking of taking the parental units there this weekend...

So will it be expanding into Paradise square? I notice that for some reason all the hous doors in Paradise Square are blue , will they have to paint everything blue also and will you only be allowed to drink WKD sitting outside in it ?

Was in the Wig this weekend, visuals of new bit look really good - can't wait. And outside seating area too! The staff said they are now shutting on 15th June and reopening about 26th/27th. Can't wait.

Wow sounds good but this will mean less spaces for all those rich looking solicitors cars surely !

Apparently, there is talk about many solicitors firms wanting to move out of the square into the new A grade modern offices as they become available across the town. In the square the buildings are all protected and small and not really ideal for modern offices, and they are also very expensive to lease. In addition in the internet age there is no need for solicitors to be in the same area so that their office juniors can deliver documents to nearby offices.

I believe there is a chance that the square will be transformed into a wonderful cafe/bar square as the legal people clear off. If so it will be fantastic and be a real asset to the city. Much better than having such a lovely corner of the city the preserve of solicitor's mercs.

Well if that is the general plans for the area it has to be welcomed .. it owuld look so much better not cluttered up with cars and more like it did look in olden days and if more cafes open yes it would be a really good spot to chill out in - just so long as the council is selective with the type of bars etc - last thing you want is a wetherspoons type culture with people throwing up and doing worse everywhere in this listed charming old square !

Just got a Facebook invite for closing down on Saturday 14th so looks like it is definately last day trading then until 27th when it reopens bigger and better. I may pop in Saturday to help them "drink pub dry" and have one last look before the changes.
