View Full Version : Are magenetic earings safe?
My daughter wants some magnetic earings, but are they safe?
They must be really strong magnets to work through the ear lobes and being so close to the head I am concerned. They would be worn for longish periods of time I suppose as once she got some she wouldn't want to take them off.
Any scientists out there who can tell me more?
A friend bought the magnetic nose stud and sniffed the magnet up her nose .
She spent the evening in A&E convinced she had it stuck in her throat.
BobDaBuilder 02-04-2005, 08:54 I aint a scientist but I do know that there is no radiation transmitted by a magnet...lol
You are surrounded by magnetics 24hrs a day and have they ever done you any harm, your TV, PC, DVD, VHS, washing machine are to name a few but pretty much every appliance in the home contains a magnet...
The only reason mobiles do damage (Not proven though) is because they do actually transmit a very, very small amount of radiation...
So yeah, in my opinion, let her have em..

what do you think keeps things stuck the planet? gravity, which is a form of magnetism... what do you think affects compass's? the magnetism of the north pole ;) there's a magnetic pull of some degree no matter where you are...
the only point you have to get worried is very powerful electro-magnets... inwhich case they have enough magnetic power to rip the iron out of your blood... lol... but I can't see a few little magnets on your ear doing much damage :)

Being an ex-squaddie I am disgusted with myself for not picking up on that 1 myself....well spotted xafier
*Twinkle* 02-04-2005, 09:38 I used to sell them at Claire's Accessories... But never bought a pair myself. I don't have any scientific evidence to back it up, but surely they can fall off easily, become lodged in your ear or just lose them? I'd say they were rather dangerous for small kids in particular who could swallow them if they found one lying around.
I don't think they'd cause her too much harm, but the risk of them coming off and landing inside her ear is not one I'd be prepared to take myself.

LOL since when was gravity a form of magnetism??
I think you'll find that the gravity is the force of attraction between any two masses and has nothing to do with magnetism.
And as for magnetism, your body doesn't feel any 'magnetic pull' as it isn't made from metal!!!

Caprice I wouldn't have thought this was possible unless she is walking on her hands because they call fall upwards from her earlobes!;) Think about it.

Unless you are Evil Knievel of course

That may very well be a fair comment and I may have missed an important factor in all this but why is it then if the body isn't a conductor, it really hurts when you jam your fingers in a plug socket...bear in mind you need to have them in both the live and the neg' to get that unique sensation...lol

If thats true, Then you just try touching the Live on it's own :heyhey:

I'm thinking more along the lines of if they are kept in whilst she is sleeping and they are pulled out as she turns over. They really could end up anywhere.
Very powerful static magnetic fields can potentially have biological effects, but they'd have to be thousands of times as strong as the field from a couple of small fixed magnets.
Also, the nature of magnetism is such that in this situation the magnetic flux would be concentrated between the two parts of the ear ring - i.e. through the ear lobe.
I wouldn't worry about it from that point of view, though losing the magnet is likely! :)
And permanent magnnetism isn't a form of gravity - it's a manifestation of unpaired electron spins in the magnetic material, as far as I can remember. Having said that, it's one of those things that I treat as magic. ;)

Magnets are actually used for their theraputic value, in physiotherapists clinics, and also worn in jewellery and supports by people with joint problems. I have seen some of these earrings and to be honest they don't stick that well, one small knock and they're gone. So the only real danger from them is if she wore them at night, they fell off and she accidentally swallowed or inhaled them.
