View Full Version : Poor ADSL from Wadsley Bridge

Here, in Walkley, I have learned that the local exchange is Wadsley Bridge.

Mr. Relative along with neighbours either side that are with different ISPs and they all have trouble.

Any ideas why, back at Psalter (Broomhill exchangee I believe) it was pretty much trouble-free, yet here it is problematic....

Cheers,
Alex

One factor is that as ADSL becomes more popular they'll be more people on it at the same time, slowing your connection. Another is the distance from the exchange, the further from the exchange you are, the slower it gets.

Sometimes, it concks out altogether - and then after restarting Firefox (or IE), it's OK.

Oh, that rules out that possibility then...not by much though.

TBH, sounds like a DSL problemo, I assume when you say it just concks out you mean you get the error "The attempt to contact www.*****.com timed out" etc etc....

It is like Phil said, purely down to excessive use of DSL connections that will over load and you'll be at the end of the queue so to speak...that can sometimes mess with your connection...just summit you gotta live with i'm afraid....

Wayne

PS: Just outta curiosity, if you're in Kent why are you using the Wadsley exchange....lol

It could be down to any number of reasons. You are certainly close enough to the exchange to be able to get a reliable DSL line.

The problem if there is one could be down to BT/Exchange, your ISP or the equipment you have.

The only way to really track it down is to deal with a real ISP and you will find customer service at Virgin to be cack. Its really the ISP who have to get onto BT about the problem and they then trace any fault back. It will be almost impossible to do this with Virgin (who are NTL).

It is also very hard to migrate from Virgin these days as you are on a datastream product and hence no MAC code (which you need to migrate).

Are we on an IPStream (like me in Kent with PlusNet), or is Virgin a DataStream set-up?

Datastream: BT Line / Virgin's equipment
IPStream: BT Line/BT Equipment....

Alex

Virgin used to be IP stream, but because of the high numbers of people signing up for the free activation and then moving I now think they are almost exclusively datastream. They will be very reuluctant to give you a mac code even if they can.

Oh, f0000.....

Aren't the customers that signed up prior to the DataStream introduction, still IPSreamers...?

my neighbour has just joined adsl through virgin.after 2 weeks fof non connection they have had to reduce hid connection to 512 from 1 meg.this appears to have almost resolved the problems & he connects 99% of the time.virgin sold hime 1 meg connection but the line cannot accomodate it.

Datastreaming I think started about 6 months ago.

You may still be on IP stream. e-mail them and ask.

Mr. Relative is on 512Kbps 50:1 ratio. :)

I'm on Wanadoo at the moment, but the 12 month contract runs out soon, next week I think... Anyway I rang Plusnet up yesterday under the assumption that I'd possibly be able to get 2 Mb for 15 quid a month (3 quid cheaper than I'm paying now) but they said I could only get 512k... :(

Short of moving to Hillsborough to be closer to Wadsley Bridge exchange... Which I think Mum and Dad would object to, is there any ISP that serves this far up in Stannington that could give me anything above 512k?! Even if it's only 1 Mb?!

In stanington as well some of the time and 6KM from Wadlsley bridge exchange. Its been a night mare of consistently dropped broadband at 1MB, and then after downgrading to 500, no difference, it was still down for 60% of the time.

Try this interesting technique, unless its UNIQUE to my phone line.....if you cant connect to broadband on Wadsley bridge, switch on the PHONE plugged into the filter on the broadband circuit that pluds into the master socket and leave it with the dial tone on, this will change to the whistling noise until it just goes silent. I have tried this and it has 100% solved my broadband dropped connection issues, if the phone is 'on, ie dial tone, th ASDL is fine... but as soon as I put down the phone, as it were, ASDL disconnects within 3 minutes and stays off unless I switch on the dial tone again....and then it reconnects within about 30 seconds and stays on as long as phone is 'engaged'.

tried changing different filters, no difference. tried spare BT phone as well and again, no difference.

OK, so I have lost my BT phone line as the phoe is always engaged, but never used it anyway.

Still a curious fault and BT offered no explanation whatsoever.....

Contact your ISP and get them to raise a fault to BTW.

UK Online sent my son an email offering 1MB connection at Stannington. I checked on their website and we are only offered 512kbps but whether this is because the website is out of date I don't know. I'm with Tesco at the moment and have been since the distances were relaxed Sept 2004. It's generally been trouble free so I'm not prepared to cancel the contract to chance changing to a product that offers varying levels of service and connection.

As Tesco is datastream I would have to disconnect and then apply to UK Online - some people have been waiting 10 weeks for th9is company to connect them.

If you do decide to chance it let us know how you get on :)

I thought I'd write an update on this - since then, Mr Relative's wife, (Mrs Relative :D) has her company providing BB as she works from home, this is from another master BT socket in the kitchen (it's not the 0114 234 number), it's something else, and there is not a problem.

However,

- It isn't with a data stream company
- The box looks a bit newer than the kitchen socket....
