As young teenagers [13 or14] we were really excited to know a "real" communist and in the shop you could buy the Daily Worker , China Reconstructs and Soviet Weekly , amongst others. We thought it was great to have "discovered " an alternative world , almost underground , amongst our parents , teachers and friends , at least. The Daily Worker used to give the radio bands for East European cities -in English ---and it was fascinating to listen to Radio Moscow or East Berlin or Bucharest on an old crackly wireless , late at night. This was at the height of the Cold War , too , so , everything about Russia or Eastern Europe carried with it more significance than today. We almost got used to the fact that if something went haywire in East Berlin , it could lead to a nuclear war. No "hot line" then. All from the "Peace Shop". Brought back memories ! |
