Alan Shearer has declared that he will play on at Newcastle for another season and has taken up the role as 'player coach'.

Good luck to him. I think deep down he would love to win some silverware and for a goalscorer of his ability he has won very little.

Poor old Alan.. if he'd come to MU in the first place he'd have actually won some trophies!

Still.. we all make stupid decisions in our lifetime dont we!

I'm not the biggest fan of NUFC but the Premiership will be a better place with Alan Shearer in it for another year!. He's only 33 years old (i think) so there should be plenty of life left in him yet.

ANGELUS: I'm just wondering why every football conversation needs to come back to Manchester United where your concerned?.

Man Utd obsessed Angelus may be, but I think it was a reasonable point to make in this thread.

Allegedly Shearer had the chance to join Man Utd, and if he had of done he might have got some reward for his undoubted talent.

I'm not sure staying with NUFC for another year will make much difference to his silverware collection, but he'll probably get the all time NUFC goal scoring record.

But obviously silverware isn't Shearer's main priority!. If it was, he'd have joined a club that were more able to provide silverware.
Shearer's a Geordie through and through and the question was about Shearer staying with NUFC, not who he could/should have joined in the past?.

ANGELUS (sorry for dragging your name up again)never made any attempt to address the thread starter's question, instead he just jumped straight in to a Manchester United "We're better than you" statement again :?.

Firstly let me say I don't doubt Shearer's love for NUFC being a huge motivation for him staying on, and joining NUFC in the first place. But back in '96 NUFC looked very much like they could win some silverware. They certainly weren't no-hopers ('94-95 finished 6th, '95-96 finished 2nd). If they'd been bottom half table fodder I don't think for one minute that Shearer's love for his home town would've got in the way of his career!

I didn't see a specific question. But Lickszz did make a comment about his desire to win silverware which Angelus (in typically annoying sarcastic fashion) picked up on.

Yes, I made those comments about silverware as I heard Shearer himself state that he was Milburn's goal scoring record was not the only reason to keep going but he stated that he would sacrifice this for some medals. When you look at Shearers career it is littered with personal accolades and although he has never been part of a continuously successful team he has still managed to carve his name in the record books in a fashion.

I think it's a fantastic thing that Shearer has decided to stay on for another season as player/coach - both for Newcastle as a club and for the Premiership on the whole... it's a better league with players like Shearer in it.

He's playing on because he wants to win a trophy of course, but I think it's more because he is driven to bring a trophy to the club and fans that deserve it more than most, and to get the all time scoring record obviously ;)

As for why he didn't join ManU - that's because he's got ambition and self-respect as a player!!

Let me put it this way - as Angelus put it (albeit in the usual Man U fan arrogant ****ish way) had he gone to ManU he would undoubtedly have won several trophies in his career rather than the league he won at Blackburn... but if (WHEN!) he wins a trophy with Newcastle it will be a huge achievement and it is that ambition that drives him, and has driven him to continue into next year.

What it also means as an added bonus is he's able to start working towards his coaching badges (as he's now player/coach) so that when he does retire he can continue to serve the club and the premiership (along with his BBC MOTD appearances :P ).

He has learned a very valuable lesson- when we come in for you, you do not say NO!

He may be one of englands best ever players - I would agree to this - but then you look at the silverware cupboard - and there is one cup in there... bit ****e really for a guy of his talent would you not say!

But if (WHEN!) he wins a trophy with Newcastle it will be a huge achievement and it is that ambition that drives him, and has driven him to continue into next year

Please tell me what Newcastle are going to win now.. he has one season left with Newcastle apparently- they are not winning the FA cup this year, Bowyer and Dyer both saw to that today, they will NEVER win the league while us, chelsea and arsenal are dominating.. so that means no CL, so their only real chance is the mickey mouse (sorry cheap shot there) cup which chelsea own.

But if (WHEN) -- no he wont win ANYTHING again and that is his one failing.
