What a fantastic idea! They'll be inundated with offers to help now it's been on the BBC site; I bet they end up with more than the 50 required.

I'll add the photo to my growing collection of anatomically-correct knitted body parts  .

Told you so:
Woolly breasts appeal goes global (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/6346423.stm)
A hospital which appealed for volunteers to knit fake breasts has had offers from across the world. ... Kate McFadden, infant feeding co-ordinator, said the response to its appeal has been "amazing". ... The appeal has also prompted publicity abroad, including in Holland.

She said: "We've taken loads of calls with offers of knitting, which is brilliant, from Scotland, England, Ireland and the USA.

"The Lactation Consultants of Great Britain are happy to put the pattern on the website for free for people to download after the weekend.

"I'm accepting all offers with open arms!"

Went into John Lewis today to spend my vouchers on wool, and there were people sitting knitting these 'breasts'.

Turns out it's National Breast Feeding Awareness week, and they've set up a collection point for the knitted boobs at JL, AND you can get a free printed copy of the pattern, and even free wool if you don't have any spare at home to use.

So if you wanted to participate, but didn't fancy having to mail them off, now is the time to do it!

Hiya,
Ive just been into John lewis at lunchtime and they are doing a campaign for national breastfeeding awareness week, they are giving away patterns and wool so you can knit a boob to bring back to them to help the hospital.

So, if you're wanting to knot but have lost inspiration, this could be a fun project to do! pop into John lewis and go to the haberdashery section, you'll see a couple of knitters and their pile of boobs!

I picked up a pattern at JL. It's very short and simple so I've typed it up in case anyone wants to give it a try.

Knitted Boob Pattern for Breastfeeding Awareness Week

To make your own boob just follow this pattern – go on, you could really help the hospital.

You will need
· Double knitting wool – two balls of different colours – one darker than the other. This will be enough to make two boobs.
· Pair of 3.25-4mm knitting needles.

Give it a go
Cast on 71 stitches
Work in stocking stitch 20 rows
Row 21 K1 *K2 tog, K5 rep from * to end
Row 22 and alternate rows Purl
Row 23 K1 *K2 tog, K4 rep from * to end
Row 25 K1 *K2 tog, K3 rep from * to end
Change to darker wool for making areola
Row 27 K1 *K2 tog, K2 rep from * to end
Row 29 K1 *K2 tog, K1 rep from * to end
Row 31 K1 *K2 tog rep from * to end
Nipple: Work rows 32-36 in stocking stitch
Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches, draw up and fasten off.
Sew sides together.
In darker wool on the wrong side of the work, make a draw-string stitch round the base of the nipple, draw up and fasten off. Do not fasten too tightly.
Stuff the breast with toy stuffing, chopped up tights or shoulder pads – something squishy. Use a circle of felt to make the base and stitch in place.
Different size of boobs can be made by changing the size of the needles and amount of stuffing.
Happy knitting! Please bring finished boobs to the haberdashery department in John Lewis.

I popped into John Lewis and picked up a pattern and had a chat with a midwife there. I now know how these boobs are used for teaching and how to hand express milk. All that aside, these boobs are strangely addictive. I've made 5 so far (all magic looped, no sewing. Genius!) and they are a fantastic way to get rid of all the odds and ends of yarn that you can't bear to throw away. My boyfriend asked if I could make a big one for use as a cushion. Dirty boy!

They've had about fifty handed in so far. I never knew that there were so many people in Sheffield who really wanted to knit breasts!

There are now over 300 boobs at John Lewis. Thanks for the interest. Keep them coming .
