View Full Version : Looking for decent grub near M1
andrewwhowat 12-05-2008, 14:53 My dad wants to stop by for lunch on his way past Sheffield in a couple of weeks' time. He doesn't want to get jammed up in Sheffield traffic, so we're trying to find somewhere we can meet that's near the M1 (either end), and has decent gastro-pub style food (not ritzy or expensive, but better than scampi and chips). I can't seem to find anything good on all my google searches, so I was hoping someone might have a suggestion...? I don't know the north and east sides of Sheffield very well... Thanks in advance for any advice.
neeeeeeeeeek 12-05-2008, 14:56 That new hotel, take the Catcliffe exit and go right, don't know much about it but I think it sells food...
There is a hotel just @ Barnsley turn that advertise Barnsley Chops. Otherwise Tankersley Manor @ 35a.
andrewwhowat 26-05-2008, 09:49 Many thanks for the comments, but we're still looking for something that inspires any confidence. So, more advice please!?
Have a look at this one. Very handy for junction 29.

Bad_Hair_Day 27-05-2008, 08:33 There are a couple of good food pubs at Barlborough (J30 of the M1) - the Rose & Crown is meant to be the best, but there's also the Royal Oak, De Rhodes Arms and The Dusty Miller.
Tankersley Manor Junc. 36 If travelling North left off M1, about Half a mile on left.
or Brooklands Junc 37 turn left Half a mile on left.
Or Akbahs (spelling) Meadowbank rd. Head towards Rotherham from North side of Viaduct Behind Meadowhall.
Now I've read your post again, its definately Tankersley Manor Bar or Restaurant.
DippyDore 28-05-2008, 10:26 You could try the Hardwick Inn, follow signs from M1 J29 Chesterfield to Hardwick Hall. It's about 10 mins off the motorway and is a wonderful old historic inn in a lovely setting. They do food - I haven't eaten there for some time but it used to be decent.
I'd also endorse Tankersley Manor at J36. And, I'd suggest a detour to the village of Wentworth, J35 via Thorpe Hesley, or J36 via Harley, is well worth a visit. 2 pubs, George & Dragon and Rockingham Arms, both serving good food in nice setting. George especially good value and quality and lots of great beers on tap too. (Nice big garden at back for the kids - and excellent wine merchant in pub yard selling top class wines at reasonable prices).
If you go to wentworth the bistro used to be OK

Try the Rose & Crown... you cant go wrong!
DippyDore 28-05-2008, 14:09 or, if you fancy a change from a pub and your pops likes garden centres, there's a brand spanking new garden centre megastore at Barlboro - Dobbins, or Doolins, or summat, and they have a nice big food area - don't know what they sell though.
jinnertomcat 28-05-2008, 14:23 Red Lion at Todwick (Junction 31 off the M1) does good food. Website is www.redlion-todwick.co.uk
Bluwaterbob 02-06-2008, 11:45 Hi
I am at the bottom of Parkway (5 mins from the M1 )and have sourced a menu which has about 85% of its offerings from within 20 miles of Sheffield. We make nearly everything ourselves including bread, blackpudding and scotch eggs as well as the more regular items. The menu is on my website (under reconstuction) at www.bluwaterbar.co.uk or call me on 2754365 if you want more info
darren1979 02-06-2008, 12:39 There is a pub, nice country style one, at Junction 31 if you turn left at the round about and go towards Dinnington, its on the cross roads after the lights. Its only about a mile away from the M1. Cant remember the name, but its a motel as well.
cuddywhite 02-06-2008, 12:43 Try escape in Chapeltown or Staindrop lodge Chapeltown (Junction 35) both do excellent food and only a few mins from motorway
