Dunno if they still do, but when I were a lad I used to train in Karate at the Working Men's Club on Providence Road in Walkley on Thursdays.

I'm sure the number'll be in the phone book if you want to ring up and find out.

By the way, it's not THAT long ago since I did it, I packed it in about ooh, 10 years ago cos I went away to College, and was also getting fed up of getting bad varucchas on my feet from training bare foot on mucky old Church hall floors etc.

Anyone know of any high-ranking (ie fifth dan and above) instructors in the area? Thanks.

You don't say in which style you are looking for a high grade instructor.

Sensei Stan Knighton (Shukokai) teaches at Don Valley Stadium and there must be high graded Shotokan instruction in the city...does Eddie de Roek still teach at Burton St?

andy b (Yondan, Okinawan Goju Ryu)

Wado Ryu. I'm fifth dan myself, and have done some teaching, so you can understand why I'm looking for as senior an instructor as possible - although I'm not sure there are any in this part of the world...!

Might try shotokan at some point - what's it like, compared to Wado Ryu?

Much bigger/exagerated movements and deeper stances with no emphasis on Tai Sabaki (shifting/evasion) like in WR.

I have a mate that teaches WR (Yondan) in Sheffield so I have some experience of the style. He is part of Steve Rowes (Shikon) group. If you wish to contact him please send me an email via my website at www.hallamdojo.co.uk. If you have never seen any Okinawan Goju Ryu before you are welcome to pop into my dojo. It would be good to have a chat.

Will definitely pop down sometime soon (I'll give you a heads-up before hand), would be interesting to take a look.

I'm currently looking in to setting up a small self-defence class in Sheffield - a mixture of techniques and styles I've used over the years of being a martial artist - aimed at the non-martial artist. I've always felt that, whilst I've obviously pursued the purer aspects of the way, most people just want to be confident when they walk home at night - and purity of style doesn't nec equal a useful self-defence system. But what most people don't realise is that karate, ju jitsu, aikido et al are NOT self-defence systems, but something else entirely...

"Once the naked feet have entered on to the dojo floor, they are forever changed" - Okinawan saying.

Would be nice to talk to a fellow karateka about the flaws/advantages of our own system/s.

Is there a Shotokan karate club in Sheffield? I haven't had any luck in finding one...

You might have better luck asking on the martial arts planet (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/index.php) forums.

I did a half-hearted look for one a few months back when I was planning to take it up again. I had no luck though I'm afraid.

Why Shotokan? Have you done that style before?

One of the women I train Ju-Jitsu with is a 5th Dan Shotokan Karate - she (I think) instructs at the Hillsborough Sports Arena (near the dog track) on Monday and Wednesday nights, can't remember the exact times.

I used to train at the Walkley WMC up to 3 times a week back when I was a teenager, at nearly 28 I'm too old for all that physical exertion nowadays.... :P

We run a Shotokan club in North Sheffield; Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge area. Don't know if that would be in the right area for you or not.

Check out http://crackedfinger.com/clubs/steelcityshotokan/ for more info.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we are starting a new club night for our Shotokan karate club in Hillsborough.

Our club has been training in North Sheffield for over 15 years and we figured that starting a new class in Hillsborough would make us more accessible for everyone.

We'll be training at the 393 club on Langsett road on Monday evenings, 8.15 - 9.15.

If you've always fancied trying it, or have previously trained and are wanting to get back into it then feel free to drop by and see what you think.

It's a good all-round martial art, great for busting stress, keeping fit and building a bit of confidence.

If you'd like more information then reply to the thread and I'll do my best.

Alternativly see http://www.crackedfinger.com/clubs/steelcityshotokan/ or E-mail me at steelcityshotokan@hotmail.com

There's also Shotokan/****o Ryu style lessons at Hillsborough Leisure centre on Wednesday and Friday nights 6.15 - 7.45 PM.

I've been training there for about 6 or 7 weeks now.

Went to the Hillsborough club tonight, worth going.

Will probably be there a few times yet before I decide if I want to carry on, good reason to get myself to sports centre then drag myself to gym after.

Rich, I was the 'heavyweight' bloke in Gi and white belt if you were there!?

Good Shotokan (Federation of Shotokan Karate affiliated) instructor at Myrtle Springs Fitness Centre. I used to go - only thing I didn't like was the blinking kiddies!

However, Joe (the instructor) does make a lot of time for the adults and knows lots of stuff from the other martial arts he's studied

Where's that club you mention Sandy? eg.in relation to tramstop/road etc.

I am really interested in Shotokan Karate, having not trained for about 5 years. Are there two clubs that train in hillsborough? One at the leisure centre and one somewhere else or is it just one club?

DaFoot
06-09-2004, 16:01
Sarah - One Shotokan club trains on mondays, other is a Shukokai (differant style of Karate) club at leisure centre.

Come along tonight to Shotokan club @ 393 club near Morrisons supermarket. 8pm tonight.

It's Tani Ha ****oryu Shukokai, nothing to do with shotokan. I've been training there for 2 1/2 years and Sensei Nash is a top instructor.

What association/governing body is the Hillsborough Shukokai affiliated to? Who runs your licensing/grading?

DaFoot

Even tho the rainbow of colours currently availible to Karateka is not exactly 'traditional' ;)

wasenshi
20-09-2004, 20:32
Our association is Heian Ryu Karate Group, affiliated to the EKGB. If you check out the EKGB website you will be able to find all our members on there. Our gradings and insurance are all done internally through our chief instructor (who is also the head of the association). Dan gradings are done by a panel of three dan grades of at least sandan.

I have just found out that there is a Tae Kwon Do club at Springwater Community Centre (next to St John fisher school) in Hackenthorpe. It is over the field just behind the Hackenthorpe tram stop. I think it runs Wednesdays 6-8 and Saturdays 12-2.

3 is very young to take up something like karate and i doubt if you will find anywhere that will take him, certainly not concord, why do you want him to take up a martial art at that age anyway, not a critisism but a question

You will find that most kids classes start from age 4, I don’t let kids into our classes until they are about 5 years old because I don’t do kids games, my junior classes are more or less the same as the regular classes.

Made me laugh :p

The burton street shotokan class is still on as far as I know, I went once a while back, little too traditional for my taste but would suit some.

For smaller children, might be worth trying castle black belt academy (www.castlebba.com). Little expensive, but good with children.
