I know this is a little off topic, but I assume it affects a lot of people in Sheffield.

Does anyone know the legal standing when you buy something online and you are not happy with it?

I purchased some hardware from a computer company and the monitors that have arrived are not the colour I expected.

As I was unable to see the items I was purchasing am I entitled to return them?

I thought that’s why Agros display lots of their stock in their shops, so that people can see them and no confusion cab be caused.

Anyone have any ideas on this or experience?

Check the returns policy on the site that you ordered the items from?

Most places are fine about returning stuff if it's in a resaleable condition.

They won’t accept anything back because the items would have to go back to Ireland.

I thought we the customer could refuse items if they are not exactly what you thought you where getting because you can’t physically see then item you are purchasing.

This might be of some help I guess (though I haven't read it).

distance selling regulations in the consumer credit act give you the right to return the goods within 10 days.
Inform them in writing immediately that you are not accepting the item and speak to citizens advice.

If you made the purchase using a credit card then it might be worth giving them a call as well to see if they will offer any help (they are equally liable under the same legislation).

Thnaks a lot for you help.

Cyclone - This was purchased under account as its a business purchase from Dell. So in reality, they haven't been paid yet!

distance selling laws might not apply to business purchases.

That depends on what has been purchased.
If the item has been taylored to your requirements (i.e. you bought a t-shirt and had your name printed on the back but after recieving it decided you didn't want it, you can't return it).

Similar if you pay for a service online, you can't return a service so that too is exempt from the distance selling regulations act once the service has been fulfilled.

I don't know if this is relevant but Dell sent us (at work I mean) the wrong keyboards once - they sent german ones instead of UK ones and they didn't take those back just sent us replacements - free of charge. It would be worth contacting them because our IT manager said they don't do returns because it costs more for the courier then it does for the overall cost of a replacement item (well for keyboards it does anyway). I would give their customer service a ring.

it says at the top of the topic what was purchased, not many people buy customised monitors.

wendy - if Dell admit the mistake then it's up to them how to rectify it I suppose, i doubt that the cost of carriage is more than the value of a monitor though.
