im sure i heard (in passing) today that the government were planning to make it "illegal" for resterants to serve things with out of season fruit and veg?
theyd get fined if they did.

now...after the cannabis reclassification debacle im starting to get worried.
is this the type of crime labour are really worried about? or is it cheap law so they dont have to spend more money on the "real" crimes we ALL want getting rid of like burgulary, rape, murder, mugging etc?

It was Gordon Ramsey who wanted it to be brought in.

Fining is ridiculously harsh and won't work.

Although that said there does seem to be something wrong with being able to get any fruit and veg you want any time of the year. i'm sure it wasn't possible to get say strawberries in january when I was a kid

i dont think its wrong...just different
indeed it was harsh being able to get strawberries at one point of the year only, and say brocoli or someat at another

Fines will just create another level of bureaucracy that local authorities feed on.............

Another far more important point, many third world farmers survive only by producing goods for the west, for example, Kenya produce green beans for Tesco and many other supermarkets. A ban would mean financial ruin for them.

Gordon Ramsay's mad ideas kind of put some of the madder laws we've had lately into the shade - you thought Gordon Brown was bad? Wait til you hear what the potty mouthed psycho has to say! Hopefully everyone, including MPs are sick to the back teeth of cooks trying to stick their oars in and get some kudos from telling other people what to shove in their pieholes and will tell him to sod off back to his kitchen and keep his ginger mouth shut. The goon.

Sorry for the outburst, Ramsay is the Number Two (in more ways than one) on my cook hitlist. Grrrrr....;)

I heard the Labour party want to fine people, who get fined.

The penalty culture does seem to be going mad at the moment.

And it will probably only get worse as authorities get used to the money that fines bring in, whether they are justified or not.

Gordon Ramsey only said it because, by coincidence, he's got a new TV series starting this week and wanted you all to sit up and take notice.

Job done - good on yer, Gordon.

Whoever heard of Pomegranites in May!

These were looked forward to in the autumn, just in time for Halloween. And if you COULD get salad for christmas, it was sooooo expensive. Looks like imports or force growing of fruit and veg have made it readily available at any time of the year.

I do try to get locally grown produce when it's in season and I do try to buy fair trade or organic with everything else, I can't see anything wrong with doing it that way.
I don't understand why we should only eat what's on our doorstep when the world has so much to offer.

Local fresh food does taste a lot better.

Look at freshly picked strawberrys and other fruit in summer.

But it is nice to be able to pick up fruit all year round.

I must make a point of NOT watching that then ;)

So funny though, as in the days before the celebrity chef people DID cook what was in season but now with all their books exhorting us to cook Asparagus Souffles and Quinoa Quiche and then all the pressure over healthy eating of course people need out of season food! People used to be happy spending a few months every winter eating turnips and laying down fat but now it's verboten, thanks to the chefs!

What a load of crap!!! Supermarkets now-a-days have exellent fruits & vegies, and who cares if there a bit old...bananas turn in a day or so at home, i don't chuck them out.

These so called "healthfood nuts" make me laugh, their ideas are usually at someone elses expense anyhow, they tell you what your suppose to be eating, then they go and get some fish and chips .

A stupid idea. Where is the crime in eating fruit and veg out of season. Also it is contradictory as the Government are also at the same time people to eat more fruit and veg as part of this 5 a day business.

Would five portions of Turnip a day count?

That's questionable. Many people would argue that pouring thousands of tons of pollutants into the atmosphere for the sake of letting people eat strawberries whenever they feel like it, is a very backwards step indeed. In fact it's only in the last few years that we've begun to realise how much damage it's done.

virtually every step of "progress" means pumping more pollutants into ourselves, or the atmosphere or destroying more and more

Ramsay can shove it where the sun don't shine. Who is he to dictate to us when his own restuarants sell out if season food? ........T055er

Its time that chef's did the cooking and stop trying to get into politicts.
They are just interested in their own self importance, fruit and vegetables can be grown all year in the UK under glass, maybe we should fine foul mouthed chef's who try and boost their books and TV programs by coming out with a load of Cr*p

Has he seen the light? does his restuarant's use only use produce from the UK, I dont think so.

No it doesn't and no it doesn't have to. At the moment anything that is less harsh on the environment would be considered as progress.

Is eating strawberries in January progress or greed? Progress would be using that land to feed the people who live near by, not growing veg for us.
