When my son was about 10 and a keen United fan, it was splashed across the front page of the Star "Derek Dooley to go to United "
Now Derek Dooley had lost a leg playing for Sheffield Wednesday i think when he was 18 and they had employed him at the ground but unfeelingly were getting rid of him, so United offered him a job as Transport Manger.
This wasn't clear in the heading of the Star and my son was dumfounded when I showed it to him (me being a wednesday fan and fed up living with 4 unitedites.)
After a few mins silence struggling with his thoughts he said

"Well he won't play for first team"
I loved it.

He would have got into the team at that time with no problem Hazel :D

Derek is ill in bed apparently, does anyone know how he is ?

He stands out as one of Sheffield football's all time gentlemen.

Yes it was tragic what happened to him.
I don't suppose he is very old now. 50's would you say.

He will thank you for that..but he's got to be in his 70s .I was going ashore from chatham in the 50s and had just bought a paper in which it was reported that he had lost his leg following a match against Preston NE
