Kayak along the canal as far as Rotherham, then hitch a lift with a gypsy caravan to the meterological centre in Wakefield and complete the journey to Leeds by weather balloon, landing on the roof of the Merrion Centre.

Hope that helps!

When had the floods last year, I cycled along the A57 Snake Pass to Liverpool, then the M62 past Manchester, all the way to that village on the outskirts of Bradford.

There's a bus service to Leeds (X32, if they haven't changed the number since the last time I caught one).

It's probably the cheapest public-transport trip, but how regular it is and how long it takes would also be factors. If you need to be in Leeds at 8am and the first bus leaves Sheffield at 7.45, it's not working for you.

There is, or was, a monthly pass covering all transport in both South and West Yorkshire; that's worth looking into.

They are, but I belive they are not valid on certain train services, such as Crosscountry and EMT who both run express trains to Leeds. Nothern Rail honour such tickets but their services are slower.

Fair point. Northern do still have the hourly train that only takes 50 minutes, though .. that wouldn't be such a bad option.

I've been commuting everyday from Sheff to Leeds for almost 5 years now. By far the cheapest is sharing with someone else as i did for 2 years (but he found a job in sheff a few months ago) so back on trains now. A weekly ticket is about £45 or daily £10.10. For me trains are cheapest as fuel+parking works out at about £2-3 more a day. Depending on the hours you work, National Express may suit you as that is cheaper than train, but very infrequent service.

It boils down to how much a train season ticket is Vs. diesel/petrol costs. I dread to think how much it will cost in car to get up to Leeds every day now let alone in the future, fuel seems to rise daily. It may even be cheaper to rent a flat than travel there if the train is not convenient.

National Express coaches have a funny timetable but if it suits you it might be worth looking at. It's much cheaper by coach than by train and only takes 10 mins longer (Train is 40 mins, Coach is 50 mins). My partner and sister both gets the train from Sheffield to Leeds every day. I like the coach myself partly as I need to sit down on transport but it can run very late if there is traffic and it's best to be booked on one at busy times.
