I'm sure some people will have trouble installing Sp3.
I've installed it on 4 computers two of which gave and ACCESS DENIED error
about thirds into the installation. At which point Sp3 has to be unistalled.
The final message is
Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly.

There is a fix but its a bit scarey; Enter Xp Sp3 Access Denied into your favourite seach engine and look for the correction instructions at the Microsoft Technet web site.

That link is to the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview, not the actual Service Pack.

If you are looking to directly download SP3, you need the 'Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers' file found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

Ive installed Sp3 on 8 machines three of which gave an ACCESS is DENIED error. See microsoft knowledge based article 949377 for resolution.

On Restart, there's a prompt to turn on Automatic Updates. Regardless of what you select Automatic Updates is turned ON.

Mine gets to the "downloading and installing updates" bit and never ever downloads. I have tried it several times and even left it for 2 hours and it never actually gets past the downloading bit. Thank god I have an ultra reliable Vista install on the other drive

Exactly the problem I had, and I thought it was me!!
It took 5 attempts to get it to download over 2 evenings. It just sat there, downloading nothing.
It was the same with my laptop.
Now, on my pc where I am the only user I have to click on my name icon to log on.
This is an extra step which was absent previously.
Is there any way to get rid of this irritation??

Yes it is free, but it's not a necessity and it's stopped one program working on my pc.

Just done a system restore back to SP2 as I couldn't get the free version of AVG8 to install. Not sure if SP3 was to blame (or Free AVG8) but I'm now back with AVG 7.5 and SP2 and all is well

Edit: Smiley domination again - read it as an 8 !!!

Is it not obligitory (or will be soon) to have it installed? So automatic update will force you to install it (unless you turn of automatic update).

Is it feasible or wise, not to bother with it?

Certainly. I would personally advise not to install it especially so from hearing all the problems in this thread.
If it aint broke... dont fix it!

Hi everybody, quoting from an item I saw on Google News yesterday the reboot problem seems to be confined to computers with AMD processors and HP computers. Some crash with a STOP error code of 0s0000007e or just fail to reboot the first time.
Quote "To fix the problem users should hit the F8 key during restart when the black Windows XP screen comes up,and once in safe mode, choose the 'Disable automatic restart on system failure' option".
I have used System Restore and gone back to Windows XP SP2 and have not as yet tried the above tip but I would be grateful to know if anyboby tries this and it works.

Known fixes to try if you have an AMD cpu and an HP or other type of OEM PC.

Since installing SP3 I have been getting very regular crashes involving a file called nv4 mini. This is something to do with the nvidia graphics card and I have never had this problem before.

I dont know if its SP3 or what but since the install I keep getting screen blacking episodes then blue screens then other graphics related problems. Almost every chip that has a heatsink fitted seems to be getting extremely hot extremely quickly including the ones on the graphics card, maybe its a PSU issue.

Can't help you on all this, AJ.....I'm not all that up with computers.

I know when I installed SP3 on the HP desktop Specification 3200+(2.0GHz) AMD Athlon64, 1 Gb DDR, after immediate restart a mid-sized pop-up screen (with an empty black background.... DOS-type screen?) showed for about 20 seconds. I waited, the DOS-type screen disappeared and the programmes loaded up normally.

This was last Friday morning. My wife uses the Desktop most of the time, and has had no problems with start-up and use at all since the installation.

(Let's hope I'm not speaking too soon)

ps the Graphics are nVidia 9600 with latest update.

You receive a “Stop 0x0000007E” error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer

see this microsoft link for a possible solution
