Ever heared of this?

My OH has developed a dark patch across her nose which widens under each eye- like a dark butterfly.

According to her its quite common in pregnant women, has anyone ever heared of it/ experienced it?

Oooh, yes. Unfortunately.

I discovered to my horror last time that you can get the butterly, but to be more mortifying, it can manifest as quite small areas of darkened skin. In my case, above my upper lip. I nearly hid myself away under the bed and cried (okay, i did cry) because I was convinced I looked like I had a moustache. I noticed it the night I was going out to celebrate my anniversary, and spent most of the night with my hand stuck over my face. Not romantic.

Sun makes it worse. Tell her to stay out of the sun and it will be far less noticeable. I've been looking eveywhere for my factor 1billion suncream...

Yeah, I have it.. not entirely on my face and not always in a certain pattern (its not always like that) and I have it bad on my chest, and yes the sun makes it worse, so use factor fifty if you go out (to jabberwife :hehe:)

i got a coffee coloured mark on my neck with dd1 and it's never gone away and she's now 10. I think it's common.

My OH now is developing a line of hair up her belly...
She looks like a Rhodesian ridgeback.

The skin darkening is called melasma. The line on the abdomen is called linea nigra. They usually go away after delivery but not always!

It's worth bearing in mind that there is decent makeup that can cover up melasma if you have it. There are lots of brands of cosmetics intended to disguise birthmarks, cover tattoos and the like. Most are extremely long lasting, are hypoallergenic and are waterproof to the extent that you can swim and take showers without removing them.

I've tried out Dermablend to cover facial eczema for occasions when I couldn't avoid being in pubic when my skin was bad and it's really amazing stuff. It takes a bit of practice to apply it so that the camouflage doesn't draw attention to itself, but once you've sorted that out it's so good at making your skin look like normal skin.

Not everyone may need something like that, but if it's really badly affecting your ability to go out and face the world then it's worth bearing in mind.

I was out in the garden last night looking to see if there was a full moon. What with her temper, her urge to eat lots of meat, her glaring eyes and the hair sprouting all over her body I was ready to go out and buy silver bullets :D

I have had this, though I'm not pregnant, it is caused by your hormones. I was prescribed some skin bleach which got rid of it after a few weeks. :)

I got dark patches at side of both eyes when pregnant and still there over 2 yrs later.
I found putting moisturizer on that has a slight tint to it helps alot to even out the tone of it, but still there and hasn't gone.
