just 2 that i'm aware of.
There will be lots of local stops though on all the lines heading out.
Work out where you want to live, then try to locate the local station.

The airport neighbours Wilmslow.

If you're looking for accomodation, a lot of places in the South of Manchester are quite expensive.

wilmslow is where my work is, but wilmslow is WAY too expensive to live in, there is no student accomadation or anything, no house sharing... just 1 bedroom apartments at stupid prices!

looks like I need to be near Piccadilly then if those are the only train lines into Wilmslow...

Just come across this from Manchester Metropolitan University (http://www.mmu.ac.uk/accommodation/poh/index.php).

Would it be worth contacting them?

Perhaps they'll be able to give you some contacts for private shared housing if you explain your situation.

Loads of house share and student places in Didsbury (though the prices are going up!) I would recommend you living there plus your can get a direct train to wilmslow or into Manchester (plus tons of buses into Manc centre about 10/15 mins for nights out and it's pretty safe)

Didsbury is a good night out there is tons of pubs and places to eat a bit like sheffields eccy road!

Levenshulme is cheaper but not as nice.

Would definitely agree with this.

These people have a house share section (but don't seem to have alot at the mo).

I would second Evei's posting.

When I was a student in Manchester, most students not in uni accommodation lived in South Manchester, and the places of choice were Didsbury and Fallowfield. I lived in a shared house in Stockport - it's not a particularly great place, but it was ok for a year. Would be convenient for Wilmslow, I think, and also convenient for getting into central Manchester. (Buses straight there, also trains).

Have you tried a route planner to work out whether you could get from Wilmslow to Cheshire by train, bus or whatever. I use www.nationalrail.co.uk for journey and train times, it's pretty detailed, so you could find out which sort of area of manchester you need to live in, there's also a station at Salford Cres which is directly opposite Salford uni if thats any help?

well I used to live in withington and get the bus up to Oxford Road station (when I as commuting to Sheffield every day) and this was ok, but the bus can take up to 30 minutes if the traffic is bad - also depends when you leave. Its a lot faster at around 7 am than 8 am for example. Rusholme is near Oxford Road station (about 1 mile) and a lot of people seem to live around there nowadays so you could try there...

theres tonnes of trains from Oxford Road to Picadilly if you need to go there, or the bus goes all the way to picadilly gardens and then its 5- 10 minutes walk to picadilly station.

Chorlton-cum-Hardy is by far the best place to live in the Manchester area (the M21 postcode basically). So go and live there and figure the transport options around that would be my advice. Loads to do, good restaurants, specialist shops, trendy bars, proper pubs, nice parks etc etc...
http://www.chorlton.co.uk/
Chorlton Green is the most sought after bit to live in, but it's all good. Plenty of houseshare/rental options and cheaper than Didsbury (and better!). Lots of studenty types young and old.

You can get a bus to E Didsbury station (10 mins or so) then to Wilmslow from there, or 15 mins by bus to Oxford Rd station in town. There's also Stretford, Old Trafford or Trafford Bar Metrolink stations which are all only 1 mile from Chorlton (and then 15 mins ride to Piccadilly stn).
