I was one of the many who were moved to the new birkey school when it opened. lots of memories on this thread. ronnie 21-02-2009, 15:54 Did you attend Frecheville Secondary Modern School in the mid 1950s, if so, what are your memories? I went to Frecheville school from the beginning of 1957 to 1958 and got more stick from "Greeny" than anybody. I remember Mr. Slater, he had the lab and gave gardening and came to school in a Ford Consul. Mr Dyson was the woodwork teacher and Mr. Bastek the music teacher. Old Bennett the head, used to dish out the stick and it was very embarassing if you happened to be on the caning list for the morning assembly. After the stick, you usually had to stand alongside the little kids until assembly was over. His wife gave art and was OK. Then there was " Bullet" (named because of the shape of his head) who gave geography. The boy`s sports teacher also used to dish out the stick and I remember getting four of the best for making a noise in the showers after somebody had slapped me in a very sensitive place. There were never questions asked. The funny thing about getting the cane was, you never knew how many strokes you were going to get, and you didnīt dare ask !!! echo beach 21-02-2009, 21:45 I was "educated " at Frecheville from 57 to 61. Mr Mallinder was the Geography teacher and Mr Stenton took boys' sports. Does anyone remember the Christmas concerts? Every class had to provide a 5 - 10 minute slot of entertainment. In 1958 one group of pupils formed a skiffle band ( complete with guitars, washboard and tea chest bass) and sang " Tom Dooley". It brought the house down, much to the dismay of the teachers- although I'm sure some of them enjoyed it ! Did anyone go on trips abroard with school? Switzerland and Belgium come to mind. ronnie 22-02-2009, 11:20 Hi echo beach, youīre jogging my memory now! Unfortunately I donīt remember the Christmas concerts but I do remember a "Greeny" incident during the Christmas dinner in the canteen. There were extra helpings of Christ. pudding to be had and I had too much too much and could not join in the hip, hip, hurray bit for the staff. Miss Green dot not miss a thing so she had me come to the front and called all sorts of names at the same time prodding me with her finger. Itīs the only time I wished I could have been sick ! Ray ( Hookie) Hancock went to Switzerland with the school but I cannot rember the year, but either 57 or 58. Unfortunately he got knocked down and killed on Birley Moor Road about 15 years ago. PS I have a photo of the schoolīs mixed swimming team. We all swam in a gala at Cresswell baths. Laughter 16-01-2011, 17:02 Anyone remember Mrs Body - the Cookery teacher - she was like a stick insect and about as interesting! My mate Lynne and I had to wallpaper the dining area in the cooking room and we put the wallpaper on upside down - she swore we had done it on purpose - as if !! we did go in the stock room and eat the dried fruit though- oh we were so 'copped' one day by miss Green, we were having a crafty fag in the girls loo and Hillary passed it the wrong way under the partition- guess who to? Yep miss Green - my hand was read for days. David Bowler 16-01-2011, 17:26 Miss Green, need I say more. Sorry to hear Miss Green has died, I liked her David Bowler 16-01-2011, 17:32 I remember Miss Green Mr Slater Mr Lancaster Mr Bastick Mr and Mrs Bennet. I am 64 in June or are you in the same age group as my hsband Kenneth Hollingsworth? Hazel Carr was in his class and I know they meet up at the Bridge in. lovelylinda 16-01-2011, 18:03 Miss Green was a cruel horrible teacher Laughter 16-01-2011, 18:15 Yes she was, but Oh boy did you remember what she taught you? Both me and my husband both do - her favourite "If a things worth doing, It's worth doing well" was often heard in our house when my kids were little and we still say it today, then add 'Miss Green Frecheville School' Some of the boys (my friends!!) threw me and my friend Lynne in Frecheville pond one lunchtime and Jim Greensmith (no longer with us) dobbed us in and the next morning in assemble Miss green said" the two gilrls who were 'Swimming!' in The pond yesterday, report to my office - more red hands - well you never dobbed friends in did you? I am sure it was her that cause my bad joints in my hands!! Ellen42 17-01-2011, 05:22 did you know colin and david marshall? David Marshall seem familiar were they the Marshall Bros off Lister Way. Mr Sharpe also was a good Maths teacher he always ket his walking stick on his desk and came in handy for getting everyones attention when we were talking instead of doing the lesson . I was in the swimming Team and would love to see the pics you have as mine are all lost ty David Bowler 17-01-2011, 08:47 Are you the same age as me? He moved with his family to Somerset, I think, when his parents took charge of a village pub down there. Subsequently, whilst on holiday we called in to see them and had a game of skittles. The pub had a skittle alley at the back and it was a popular pastime in the area - along with drinking cider! Laughter 18-01-2011, 19:08 Think Ian Hamilton lived on Frecheville and was in my year at school I am 64 this year. think he palled about with Pete Hides. lovelylinda 19-01-2011, 09:26 Thanks for that anything on Ian Hamilton was his best friend and many moons ago my boyfriend Laughter 19-01-2011, 09:31 I will ask all my friends if anyone has any more info on him for you. Hazel (nee Orio) and I'm 64 this year. Dick Breeze 03-02-2011, 22:27 Hi. I was at Frecheville from 1953 - 1960 and then went to Chesterfield Tech to get some O levels. I lived on Basegreen Close at number 19 about 50 yards down from John Eyre. He and I stole into the Rex Cinema when we were 13 to see the Wizard of Oz!! It was the first time I'd smoked a Woodbine. I was violently ill. Anyone from my class? Janice Higgins, Vivian Hayes, Vicky Roberts, Heather Campbell (funny how I only seem to remember the girls...) Miss Green was tough but inspiriational to me. She made me read books (Biggles was my first) Mr Furness I always remember because we were discussing the universe and he asked who made GOD? At 12 years old this is a very disturbing question. Mr Sharpe for maths had a bad limp. Mr Bennett in art class I remember the potato prints Also remember Pirates at Xmas, ringing the school bell, being thrown in the gorse bushes, drawing a picture for maths class and getting 3 house points, getting caned. Many times Happy days Laughter 04-02-2011, 09:18 Do you remember Ken Hollingsworth lived on Basefreen drive and Dicky Crookes, they were in the school football team? Dick Breeze 05-02-2011, 11:53 Sorry don't remember Ken but Dick Crooks (Crookes) went to Chesterfield tech with me after 1960. He was in a production of Merchant of Venice there, I think he played Salerno I played Shylock. We had a mutual mate called Jack Mason who lived on Lister Ave. He died in Germany in a car crash in 1966. RIP. Laughter 05-02-2011, 12:37 Dickie (Richard when being posh!) is a big friend of our and we still keep in touch on a regular basis. He just Never changes and is still as daft as ever. and Oh I think we all got in at the Rex free at some time or other, 'The boys' would climb through the loo window and then open the bottom fire door for the girls - well until 'torchy' spotted us and we all got thrown out. echo beach 05-02-2011, 20:39 Sorry don't remember Ken but Dick Crooks (Crookes) went to Chesterfield tech with me after 1960. He was in a production of Merchant of Venice there, I think he played Salerno I played Shylock. We had a mutual mate called Jack Mason who lived on Lister Ave. He died in Germany in a car crash in 1966. RIP. I remember seeing that production of The Merchant of Venice at the Civic Theatre. The scene changes consisted of altering the number gondola poles that could be seen. ie 3 in one scene & 5 in the next. LOL. I can recall you as Shylock and Jack playing a part but not Dick Crookes. Also, I thought Jack's tragic accident happened in early 67 not 66 as I thought he was 21 when he was killed. His 21st birthday was Nov 66. My recollections could be wrong, however. It's a long time ago. Dick, did you also spend some time in Darmstadt with Jack? If so, when was that? Echo echo beach 05-02-2011, 20:50 Duplicate posting, sorry. Dick Breeze 12-02-2011, 20:22 Hi echo Yes I went to Darmstadt with Chesterfield Tech people. I remember Langalouie (?) and eating pizza for the first time. I also visited Jack in Germany later on when I was posted to Rheindahlen in 1965. Jack Mason was always a wow with the ladies. He had my undying admiration! The last time I saw him was in Darmstadt I think. He was having women troubles then. |
