If you just want a couple for rearing, why not ask at Graves Park or Heeley City Farms? Ahhh :D hmmm me thinks I might have been one of those guilty of such a response. Sorry. graceomally 31-03-2005, 21:44 I know somewhere but it is near penistone. IF you want to go there pm me for the phone number. You have to phone as he farms and will be out on his tractor if you just drop in. He sells, all sorts of chickens and geese and some ducks. You can get adult birds but chicks are much cheaper and he sells feeds too. Geese cost £40 for a trio of adults but chicks about a fiver each I think. Chickens are mostly cheaper but prices vary, not sure why, maybe some are rarer or just prettier or better layers....You need to buy at least 3 birds so they are happy and have a pecking order of some sort. You don't need a cockerel or gander unless you want one for hatching new chicks or an alarm clock. Watch out for geese as ganders are quite aggressive. You need a triangly hutch thing for them unless you have an extremely secure area for them to forage in. You also need to make sure it has a built in base as foxes will surely get your little chickies if not. I think he sells these as well. Its called Stores Poultry and they advertise in Admag quite often under livestock in the animals section. komal 04-04-2005, 11:40 graves park do them???? cool my own chick!!:hihi: hevydevy 21-04-2005, 17:21 Hi, I've just bought a new house and would like some chickens... any idea where I can get some from? ta FORE 21-04-2005, 21:34 Are you looking for fresh or frozen? There are some tips on keeping chickens on their homepage too. EDIT: Just been reading the site and they also deliver the coop with up to three chickens to your door, provided you are within the delivery area (I checked with my postcode - city centre - and I am). It's not cheap (yes, yes, I know) though - 329.99 notes for the coops, £369.99 all inclusive with three chickens and feed etc. nick2 24-05-2005, 09:11 Go to Chatsworth House, there are chickens wandering about in the car park, and chicken-nap a couple. Don't you need a rooster too, the hens have to get laid before they can lay ? Tracie 24-05-2005, 09:16 Originally posted by nick2 Don't you need a rooster too, the hens have to get laid before they can lay ? I just read this on the website I posted : Omlet only supply organically reared female chickens so there isn't an early morning Cock-a-Doodle-Doo. The first your neighbours will know of your new pet is when you invite them round for a quiche and tell them proudly that you made it with your own home grown eggs! I thought that was a bit odd too... Don_Kiddick 24-05-2005, 09:18 An egg is merely a chickens period :gag: so no, you don't need a rooster :D also check out the replies to this http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27246&highlight=keeping+poultry which was moved to comuter & geek chat after the mysterious disappearance of Ask An Expert :suspect: and here http://www.forshamcottagearks.com/MainSite/erol.html in fact http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=cottage+arks&meta= :wow: Tracie 24-05-2005, 09:20 Originally posted by Don_Kiddick An egg is merely a chickens period :gag: so no, you don't need a rooster :D Really? Blimey, you know, I never knew that. I've suddenly really gone off eggs though :( Hadron 24-05-2005, 09:40 I had 4 chickens a few years ago, little black & white bamptoms, they were great and fed them all the family food that was wasted even mashed up the tea from the bags. All was well 4 foot high fence which i soon found out they could get over but my neighbour was paranoid about getting salmonela poisoning from them and called in the council. I was asked to get rid so as well as fresh eggs for a few months we had fresh chicken for a week. I used to love how they picked at your toes and go into the coop and huddle up together when it gets dark. nick2 24-05-2005, 09:57 Originally posted by Don_Kiddick An egg is merely a chickens period :gag: * Barfs on keyboard * alchresearch 24-05-2005, 10:58 Originally posted by hughie Hi - I'm looking for some chickens. just a few to put in my garden so I can have fresh eggs each morning. does anybody know where i can get my hand on some- cheap! has anybody got any tips on keeping chickens aswell. many thanks First check your lease to ensure you can have them. Many leases don't as they're classed as 'livestock'. I once had a lease that said I couldn't keep any 'crowing cocks'! Don_Kiddick 26-05-2005, 10:07 Just asked a man at work who has had chickens recently. (no, not he himself personally... oh I know what I mean..) Anyway he says he got his for £1.50 each from ADMAG Livestock & Poultry section. Look for P.O.L (POINT OF LAY) birds. The best breeds to get are "Warrens" = 1 egg per day per bird or "Morans" = BIG eggs. If the birds get 'broody' (i.e/ won't get up) ask a local farmer for some eggs from his hatchery & put your bird on them. Instant additions to your stock without having to have a cockrell. And different breeds probably too. Good luck!
