I noticed today as I was driving along Abbeydale road, there's a new shop just opened called 'House Of Gowns' or something similar...... it's just a very short way up from the junction of Abbeydale & Carterknowle Rd, on a corner.

Do you know where London Road is? Runs kind of parallel to, and sandwiched between Bramall Lane and Eccelsall Rd. If you follow London Rd heading away from town, when it forks into two, take the right side. This becomes Abbydale Road.

That's what I'd suggest too - could end up with a real bargain.

I have been dragged round every friggin shop in sheffield for a prom dress. my 15yr old step daughter has been looking for ages. Most of the dresses were really ugly. Didnt get chance but normally TK MAX have a great range and some are very individual designer makes, really cheap!!!
TK Max at both Crystal Peaks and Orchard Square in Town.

We ended up ordering her from ebay and paid £35 including postage. its a lovely turquoise multi layered, halter neck, dress. just above knee length in a chiffon. It looks really expensive. there were loads of designs on the site just put in cocktail dresses.

Good luck and happy shopping

We got my daughters prom dress from Debenhams in the sale at an unbelievabley cheap price. It's a beautiful black chiffon, underlayed with a darkish cerise pink, spagetti straps with a small tie on one side. It's really lovely and had been reduced to less than a quarter of the original price.

Baaaaaargain!!!

Hold on a min,

Have I missed something.

Since when as the UK had a school prom, flippin yanks influence get's everywhere.

Being a 70's child and my daughters are only one and a half I feel out of touch, when did this happen?

Do all the schools in Sheff do this?

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I need to know for the future.

6th forms seem to do them for some reason... my 6th form did, I refused to attend because I thought it was pointless, plus I didnt like most of them...

but I attended my girlfriends when she left 6th form... felt a right dick in a tux... lol

hey

School proms have been going on for at least 8 years maybe longer. This is the first time i remember knowing about one! They have them in Universitys and hospitals (at least on my mums ward they do) and they are called end of dinner balls or midsomer balls so i think they are pretty common in the UK. Not as much a big deal as in the USA but still well known. I didnt attend mine.

We had a ball in my sixth form. Uni also have balls. Don't really see much wrong with it...know it is a tad Americanised but it was a nice way to leave 6th form.

Hi,

I can also recommend TKMaxx have got some really lovely things from there and they usually have a pretty good range of lovely dresses, especially if you are size 8-10!!

I had a Prom when I left secondary school in 96 but we were the only school in the area (not Sheffield tho) to do it, the others just had a normal disco.

Colleges and Uni's tend to have Freshers and summer balls and grad balls, but my Prom was great, it was so cool to have such a posh night with all your friends dolled up, wouldn't have missed it for the world!

TK Maxx has some bargain dresses. A lot of them are awful colours, but like anything else at that shop, dig through the dross and you can find a real gem.

I like the dresses in Debenhams as well - I think some of them are beautiful, but I suppose that's a matter of personal taste. Cole Brothers are also worth a try.

For my grad ball about 5 years back I hired a very nice dress from a place on Ecclesall Road. It specialises in wedding gowns, but there is an evening gown section upstairs. I think they're called Pronuptia, or something like that, not sure if they're still there though. They did have a lot of very dated dresses when I went, but some really nice ones as well. Plus it's well worth hiring a dress if it's the only time you're going to wear it.

There is a shop on Eccy Rd, on the left had side as you are going towards the city centre, just before you arrive at Endcliffe park that says "Prom Dresses"

And to join in the thread hikacking, I hate the "prom" thing too; it's a dance, ball or party! Leave it all in the 'movies' where it belongs.

Could anyone please enlighten me as to what a "prom dress" is supposed to look like?

Does she mean a ball gown? Perhaps we could speak English here, rather than American?

Prom dress??? what is happening in the schools up here? are they in a time warp stuck in the 1950s? Have we been invaded by America?

What's Happening???

Shouldn't the main act be dizzee rascal or Gnarls Berkley and the dress code be urban or something similar?

Now I'm damned confused

Have you been to any of the local dress agencies? It's possibly not the right time of year as they tend to be limited for space and keep their posh frocks for nearer to the Christmas season but it's worth a look. You can often pick up "worn once" cocktail style dresses etc. I got an Escada one from the agency at hunter's bar once. Proper bargain. I can't remember what it's called. There is also a good one at the top of Twentywell Lane and a posh one on Baslow too.

If you are looking for a prom dress definition, then it is here:
en wikipedia org/wiki/Prom_dresses (sorry, can't send links, maybe someone will edit it)

Then, you can simply Google "prom dresses" for examples. There are thousands. Honestly, it was my problem too some time ago and it seems that one can wear any dress that she feels good in. Short, long, any color, maybe not too sexy (I read that some girls were banned for too sexy dresses). Prom dresses can be simple or sophisticated, glamorous or toned, cheap or expensive. Just let it be a dress.

As for me, I recommend this prom dresses website: www splendid-gowns com

My daughter had her prom last year and she wanted to look really special, so I was the purse that followed her lol. We got the dress from Liquorice on Ecclesall Road. There is something there for all budgets. They are made to measure, long or short in all colours. The lady that owns the shop is fantastic very professional. She will take the name of your school and if she gets anybody else in from your school and they pick the same as you it will not be sold to them therefore guarantees that nobody will have the same dress as you. If you have a long dress after the prom they will shorten it for you so that you can wear it again. They also do prom jewellery. My daughter also had a makeover at Debenhams (MAC dept), this was excellent value for money £25 and then you could choose products to the value of £25 after the makeover. I hope this helps and would like to wish you a great prom.:)

I had my prom in 2004 and it was the best day of my school life. Me and my friends arrived in a limo albeit an hour late lol as we were driving round everywhere, we had champagne, and a sparkly carpet inside. Lights around the windows plus 2 really cool chauffers who turned the music up when it was a song we liked, it was fab. I split a fair bit of champers down my dress as my mouth wasn't big enough (haha). Wish I could relive that day again. My dress was 20.00 from lypstick in town centre (which is now closed and is a furniture shop). I got compliments from everyone and I refused to spend ridiculous amouts of money like loads of the other girls did as I knew I would only wear it once and did not want to spend an arm and a leg for a few hours wear and then for it to be stuck in my wardrobe (which it now is).
