Do you think the word 'chink' is a nice word to use BDB? I centainly don't!

Maybe its just a term of endearment.

here's a recipe for sweet and sour sauce, I have tried it myself and it's alright but I still prefer the shop bought ones!

fry one green pepper, 100g of drained pineapple and one onion for 1 min

add 30ml of pineapple syrup, 100g of brown sugar, 60ml of chicken stock, 4tbsp wine vinegar 1tbsp tomato puree, 1tbsp cornflour (make a paste with the liquid or it will go lumpy!) and 1 tbsp soy sauce ... bring to boil and then simmer untill sauce thickens and becomes clear add a few spring onions at the end.

Personally I don't find it offensive but then again i'm not oriental...maybe you may have a point..? then again maybe not...I have many oriental friends who are always being called chinks...we'll see how we get on. However if you are from that area of the world and find it offensive please voice your concern and I will remove it straight away..!!

Dear Bob,

vegetable oil for frying
1 large onion, peeled and finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed with half a teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of tomato puree
2 tablespoons soya sauce
1 tablespoon soft brown sugar
1 tablespoon clear honey
freshly ground black pepper
half pint of stock
juice of half a lemon

Fry the onion and garlic gently until golden, remove from heat. Stir in everything else and you are indeed your own uncle...
Hope this helps.

Add in optional dried fruit (4oz) if you need it lumpier.

No, I'm not of Asian origin. I think it comes in much the same category as this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28432&highlight=paki) though.

Right, well I have looked at the other threads and followed it with pure interest but may I ask one point...

what is your point...? :loopy:

All I can see when following the other thread is that it is an on-going argument that will never end...If I was to use the term V.C, g**k etc then I could perfectly understand the uproar but i'm sorry,I feel you are fighting a battle that doesn't really bother anyone else...nice of you to stand up for an entire ethnic group all by yourself and i'm sure they would be proud if they are offended but I very much doubt it...?

And besides, this has nothing to do with racism as i'm not in any way a racist...I just wanted a recipe which I now have so argue it to yourself...

Bye...

Kristian

I'm not looking for an argument, I just wanted to point out that I felt your post was offensive, as others have.

Good luck winning your contest!

I doubt whether you would be asking if it was offensive if you were calling people Ngger or Pki. Surely its whether people from that ethnic group find it offensive. the fact your friend says Uncle Bens to you is a sign he recognises your ignorance.

Got to agree with Bob here, this thread would have faded into the past if two other people, neither of whom are particularly affected by Bobs words, had let it go.
Leaving key vowels out of other potentially discriminating words doesn't alter the fact that its you thats using them.

Thanks for your advice SHarper! What are you suggesting, that we shouldn't discourage or confront racist abuse? Perhaps we should start turning a blind eye to old ladies being mugged in the street too, after all, we're not old ladies are we? It's clearly none of our business!

The point I am trying to make is that society as a whole has a responsibility to stand up to things that are unacceptable. What language someone chooses to use to a group of friends down the pub is their choice, but rasist slurs have no place on a family orientated open forum!

However, this thread is clearly not the place to continue this discussion. Apologies for going off topic!

Not at all it shows that I am aware they are offensive words.
Maybe Bob should go down London road and start calling people the names he regards as not offensive. Let's see how they react.

Both offensive racist and astonishingly ignorant.

Grow up Trever! If we ignore things they only get worse. Did your parents teach you good morals and values by ignoring the things you did wrong as a kid? Actually, I'm probably on to a non starter here. You probably think this is the height of culture and breeding!

I still hear people in Sheffield say "I'm just nipping down to the Paki shop", so I'm not surprised or offended to hear a Chinese chippy still called a "Chinky".

Hi just to let you know im from oriental decent and i do find the word 'chinky' very offensive as i have experienced bullying and racist remarks using that very word and i really do hate people using it. I know sometimes people dont realise that it can offend other people and they may not regard it as an offensive word but there you go...

anyway just to let you know

I'm really quite upset with myself now, wondering how many people I've offended in the past.

I and most people I know say "I'm going for a chinese tonight", or "Going to get something from the chinky for dinner tonight"

I honestly don't think that most people even imagine they're being racist to people of oriental descent. I certainly never ever thought of it in those terms, killerbabe. I'm a bit nonplussed now as to the correct terminology -- what do YOU say, what do other people say?

Fair comments RubyD. This was the point that I was trying to make on the last page. If people don't address the language others use if it is racist or derogatory to some people, the behaviour will continue.

This thread has clearly made you stop and consider your actions; hopefully others will get the message in their own way.

But Kristian you didn't answer the question ...

What do YOU say?

I applaud the fact that you are often the first one to point out these things and your uncompromising stance

But you haven't actually told me/us what terminology you use and neither did killerbabe.

All you've done is make me and probably others feel self-conscious and not offered any solutions.

RubyD,

Okay, in answer to your question, my normal phraseology would be something along the lines of 'I'm going to get a Chinese on the way home'; words to that effect. I would also use a similar statement if I was going to get an Indian meal.

I'm not suggesting that people should start to say 'I'm about to go out and purchase food from the local takeaway that specialises in recipes mainly derived from the great Chinese people, shall I get you some prawn crackers?' That would be a very silly state of affairs.

Certain forum members seem to have the opinion that I am an overly PC, gay-rights campainging, lefty do-gooder of the highest order; this could not be further from the truth. Yes, I am an out and proud gay man. Yes, I feel it is my duty and right to stick up for myself and others that are getting a raw deal.

The reason that I didn't answer your question in my last reply on this thread was because it's not my place to tell you what the correct terms to use are. There may be people of Chinese origin reading this post who would be offended by me referring to the act of 'fetching a Chinese'; however, I would think there would be a lot more offence taken to the phrase 'fetching a chinky'.

If you were to go to your local convenience store that was run by an Asian person, would you choose to say you were 'going to the off-licence, or 'going to the paki shop'? I know people who say both, but I bet they wouldn't say the latter in front of the owner!

It seems to me that you question what I am saying in an attempt to blur the boundaries of common sense; I do hope I am wrong with regards to this perception. My intention was not to make people feel self conscious and not offer and solutions, and I'm sorry that you feel that is what I did.

Should you want further clarification, I would suggest you go out and ask some people of Chinese origin what their opinion is? Perhaps you could let us know what your findings are!

Final apology to mods for allowing myself to be drawn into taking this thread further away from the original topic, which I believe was a request for a receipe for sweet and sour sauce!

The takeaway variety is odd stuff fer sure. I've often thought it looks a bit like the resin used for making a boat before you soak the fibreglass in it.

I take it there is actually a sauce called "sweet and sour" somewhere in China? (big place after all)

We don't say these things to be nasty on purpose, it was purely occidental.

Have you tried it yet Bob?

K, thank for that very detailed reply. I'll consider my wrist slapped lol ... I also asked killerbabe, but s/he's already told us that s/he found "the chinky" an unacceptable shortform of "chinese takeaway"in her original post. "Getting some chinese style food" might be an acceptable compromise. Many "chinese" people are actually English anyway having been in Sheffield all their lives and even into third and fourth generation.

Back to the sweet and sour topic.

Many, many years ago now the first chinese takeaway that opened near us was the Sun on Heeley Bottom and so their version of sweet and sour was the yardstick for us ... it was glutinous and definitely sweet .... nowadays, the sweet and sour we get seems a bit runny and too sour. They also used to do this rissole thing called a savoury cake which was absolutely yummy ...

I've tried similar to the recipes given and they never seem to turn out right ... frozen sweet and sour from Jack Fulton's at Woodseats isn't bad ... but it''ll never compare to the Sun's!!

Hey again

Yeah i would prefer people to use the term chinese instead of 'chinky' im sure many people of oriental decent would. However much i would like people to use that term i cannot pick and choose and people can say what they wish. As im sure people have been brought up with word 'chinky' and may not regard this as offensive in any way.

With regards to the sweet and sour discussion.... my mum makes the best sweet and sour sauce and the best curry sauce you will ever taste in your life!

Ok - last word to killerbabe on whether 'chinky' is perceived as racist: it is, and 'Chinese' is the preferred terminology. Noted.

However killerbabe, what BobDaBuilder (and others) would now like to know is ....... what is your Mum's recipe for "the best sweet and sour sauce" that anyone of us "will ever taste"?

With respect killerbabe but I would never go to a Chinese takeaway for curry. It usually contains only black pepper and chilli powder with turmeric if you are lucky. But then I would not go to an Indian restaurant for sweet 'n' sour either.
If your mother is of Malaysian/Singapore origins then I might withdraw this statement.
