Seeing as Spring is upon us and I am doing a be healthier thing I have started walking to work and back. The pollution from traffic from South Rd into town seems a lot worse than usual. I know its bad when its very dry but it was really bad early this morning (7.30) with low levels of traffic.

It is a problem that puts me off walking and I must have a relatively pleasant route compared to a lot of people.

Is there anyting the council can do to reduce pollution from the air around main roads? I assume when the trees are fully up and running it takes it away a bit but anyone know of anyway for the council to reduce this pollution (other than extra trees)?

Yes - people could stop using their cars so much.

If possible, walk to work or get the bus.

Walk the kids to school where possible rather than do short school runs.

It's not a Council issue - it's something for all of us.

Sheffield sits in a 'bowl' and in the summer tends to get inversions above it that trap the crud at ground level. The only way to reduce that is not to produce so much crud in the first place.

Ban buses, lorries and cars from our roads ? The question of lung damage caused by exhaust fumes is conveniently obscured by the general hysteria about the effects of smoking.

How strange that it is considered anti-social to smoke but acceptable to pollute everybody's air with the products of the internal combustion engine :gag:

short of banning traffic (and I'm sure tat would be popular) there must be some measures the council could put in place to aleviate the problem?
