View Full Version : Hotel Restaurants in Sheffield?
jamesogt 29-03-2005, 14:27 Does anybody know of the best Hotel restaurants in Sheffield? I know the Marriot and the Holiday inn Royal Vic have them, but does anyone thats not staying go there? and are they very good? I find ecclesall rd is a bit of a battle on the weekend and hotels usually have parking and reservations available.
We had a meal at the Novotel ,last june ,I know its not that recent but it was very good and would definately go again.found it reasonably priced and good value.
Cutglass 29-03-2005, 14:49 I spent Crimbo wk/end at the Victoria and altho it was Xmas lunch so you expect it to be ok, it was brill, definitely recommend it! Had a few suppers there too and they were lovely, so if you're wanting somewhere different, give them a try!
Lucy_Smith 29-03-2005, 15:01 My boyfriend and I had dinner at the Hilton a while back and it was TERRIBLE. Never been to such an awful restaurent. Please don't put yourself through the torture of eating their food, it tasted like warmed up microwave food :gag:

I echo your sentiments Lucy! I had the misfortune to eat there on several occasions for corporate functions. Blee! :gag:

Greenback 29-03-2005, 15:12 The Royal Victoria's pretty good. But a bit quiet whenever I've been.
Best drive out to Matlock and give East Lodge a go. Now that's a hotel restaurant!
JonJParr 29-03-2005, 15:18 Hotel chains tend to have meals that are unfortunately pre-packaged and reheated / microwaved. This isn't cooking!! Once slight exception to this is Malmaison where the food is exquisite.
Save your money and go to a decent restaurant like Thyme where the chefs actually cook the food with pans, grills etc.
Lucy_Smith 29-03-2005, 15:31 Learnt that lesson the hard way JohnJParr!
A little off topic but where exactly is Thyme? I've heard it mentioned a lot and would like to go

I think that depends on the hotel chain.
At least some things must be around in a non preprepared way as they can generally make anything specific that you ask for in the better hotels.
The Hotel Bristol has a good 3* fresh kitchen and I have eaten there many times (boyfriend used to work there). Recommended.
mjlacey21 29-03-2005, 15:46 My old company and current both use Hotel Bristol and have only heard good things about it from the clients - apart from one that said it was a bit modern for him(?!). It does seem to book up quite fast though.
jamesogt 29-03-2005, 20:26 Thanks for the tips so far keep them coming, I may try one of them this weekend
threecolours 29-03-2005, 22:21 Just to add...though you'd probably realise if when you visited them. The Novotel has limited parking (food not so good either!). Holiday Inn has got stacks of parking and food ok I spose.
Otherwise, Id agree with the rest here and avoid hotel restaurants in Sheff centre.

underground1 01-04-2005, 18:09 Royal Victoria ( holiday inn at wicker) best place in sheffield. :P
Anywhere BUT the Royal Victoria. We went there at Christmas and before we agreed to the booking we checked it out on the net. Huge dining hall shown with nice round tables and posh cutlery. They also made much of the fact it was a non-smoking environment. So far so good. It cost £37.50 each and the price of wine took it to around £50.
The tables had been removed and replaced with trestle tables so they could cram in several hundred people, half of whom smoked throughout the meal.
The first course consisted of some nice salmon pate but when I asked for bread I was told that was for the soup course.
The rest of the meal was awful and as the evening progressed the music was gradually turned up to that it eventually segued into disco music.
A really poor evening all told.
jsknight100 03-04-2005, 18:10 My favorite restaurant in Sheffield is Rafters this is on a par with restaurants in France. However restaurants in France are much cheaper! Why are restaurants in France much cheaper than in England?
jamesogt 07-04-2005, 20:40 Went out this weekend to Royal Vic and everything was lovely relatively busy, easy to park and a lovely room. Food was also good about £60 for the 2 of us with wine, as someone else said about the room being crammed with hundreds that must have been another room, this one sat about 60 maximum. Would highly recommend it, make a reservation though as apparently the restaurant is often booked for private functions on the weekends.
Thanks for all the comments we may try some more soon!!
jamesogt 06-05-2005, 14:20 sorry just wanted to get it off page 5 !! any more comments???
