It sounds like "show formatting" which is available in Word but not in my version of WordPad.

Is there a button on one of the toolbars which has what you describe as a "quavour" on it?

OK. From top Menus

>View>Toolbars

Select "Standard"

You should now see a toolbar which includes a button with the ¶ sign.

Click on it!

OK now?

Can you get any Toolbar visible below the Menu Bar?

When you go View>Toolbar do any of those Toolbars listed have a tick beside them?

If you have any toolbar visible you can customise the ¶ button into it.

Go Tools>Customise
Click on the "Commands" Tab
In the Left Hand Window select View
In the Right Hand Window scroll until you see "Show All" and the ¶ Sign
Click-On and Drag "Show All" up to the toolbar that you can see.

A ¶ Button should appear and you should be able to use it to solve the problem.

(If you cannot get any toolbars up, it sounds like a corrupt programme or corrupt registry problem)

Are you using Microsoft Word or Windows Wordpad? I know exactly what you mean, but I don't think it's possible to get into that situation in Wordpad.

If it's in Word, you need to click the ¶ button as cgksheff said.

Goto View/Toolbars - and untick everything apart from "Standard"

The ¶ button should appear on the standard toolbar (but sometimes gets hidden if you have multiple toolbars stacking up - which may be why you cant see it). Click it...and all the formatting marks should disappear.

Then go back to View/Toolbars and tick the toolbars you want back on again.

[edit]
Hrm...just found this out: Go to Tools/Options and click on the View tab. Under "formatting marks" un-tick "all". I just found that out now - you learn something useless every day.

"Address Bar"?????

I think that you are somehow editing a Word Document inside Internet Explorer not running MSWord!

So look for a second Menu Bar lower down inside the IE window and follow earlier instructions.

Or Close out and open MS Word.
